The sanctuary of Caravaggio (Bergamo) was built in the mid-1500s after a famous miracle occurred in the plain near the medieval village. In 1809, the squat bell tower was provided with five new bells, made in Milan. At the beginning of the 20th century, three of the five original bells, which escaped requisition during the war after the elevation of the sanctuary to a Roman basilica in 1906, were recast. When the second bell was recast in 1985, the concert was expanded from five to twelve bells. The bells are in the scale of D major, eleven bells in a diatonic scale plus the minor seventh for the performance of melodies.

The bells play the hymn of the Blessed Virgin of Caravaggio, music recorded in the computer by the sanctuary organist using the electronic keyboard. This is the first time that these bells have been recorded on the bell tower, as the secretaries cannot usually accompany people to the bell tower as the sanctuary is always full of thousands of people.
On the afternoon of Monday, 26 May 1432, a young peasant girl had an apparition, when Our Lady appeared in the countryside while she was mowing the land. A spring of water began to gush out where the Virgin had left her footprints, with continuous miracles still occurring from that miraculous spring. The new shrine was built from 1575 onwards at the behest of Saint Charles. The new altar was built on the basis of St Peter's Basilica in the Vatican, surmounted by an enormous 64-metre high dome, which was built in the middle of the four arms of the sanctuary, which is one of the largest churches in Italy.
