This is a common “mistake” in racing when you close to your opponent. I’ve done this many times as well thinking your opponent will brake much later, and also the other way around. It just happens. Not reckless driving at all. Just racing👍

I seldom agree with how people evaluate a situation post incident. They seem to only look at it from their own point of view and don't consider any other. However, I pretty much agree with all of your points. You're really good at considering other points of view. The only part we differ a bit on is that last corner. From his view, you can barely tell that you hit him. Even if your bump gave him a bit of extra speed, to me it looks like he had enough time to adjust for that. I think he might have lost concentration or was frustrated because he couldn't get around you and then just ran wide on his own. Obviously, just a guess. Just another thought, fwiw... He was faster than you because he had the draft. I would guess if he got in front of you, though, he'd be holding you up for the same reason. I find it odd that if people think they're faster than you, they think you owe them the position. It's racing for a reason, otherwise, we'd all just do a hotlap to determine a winner.
@demonboost932

Don't worry about it Will, from his perspective it would seem that he is faster cause he is taking advantage of the slip stream which gives the illusion of more pace. And your tap never took him out. He made the mistake on his own. The tap was no different to what he did to you a few laps before. But everyone needs a scapegoat.

Perhaps the other driver wasn’t well practiced in running a tight line through that turn and over slowed. Or as said above didn’t want to run wide should you be on his outside at exit. It’s clear Will backed off to slot behind and you can see he races clean. I think he perhaps could have over slowed a little with the consideration the car in front was going to be running a tighter line and may behave differently thus a little more caution/space might be needed. ^ All of that said…. It’s a lot easier to consider this stuff after an incident happens. So little time to process this all in the space of in this case 1 corner while at racing speeds. Racing incident, no malice. Both parties are able to learn from it. We move forward.

I think the car that got slowed and fell between you and Sergio really shuts down his argument. That guy had pace and guess what he passed right by. If Sergio had the pace to pass he would have. I think his perception of you defending too aggressively was more of a reflection of his inability to "read the race" and anticipate the race line to find an opportunity to pass. He might have been slightly faster but just couldn't put a line together to pass. That's on him. Great video with honest reflection!! Awesome job!

I run in a kart racing league in winter and there's one guy who said to me "at a certain point, you have to know when you've been passed." I had to explain to him that I know when I've been passed when someone is in front of me instead of behind me. If you're alongside, you're getting room and if you pass me, you've passed me, but making a pass stick is part of racing. Sergio might be related to him. He had a run on you several times at Andretti, and kept having to back out or just didn't have the speed to get around you. It's clear from the video that others with more pace were getting by cleanly and I think he just felt entitled to the same. It's a shame about the wreck, but I get the feeling he still would have had words for you if you hadn't come together there, too.

I’m surprised a guy from F3 was complaining about your driving. Most drivers drive a lot worse in the 3K plus splits. I didn’t think you were driving recklessly at all. You were defending well and if that guy behind you was as fast as he said he was then he should’ve been able to make a clean pass easily. You did make a mistake, admittedly, and hit the guy on corner entry however, he spun himself out on the front straight by hitting the grass. I don’t think he had damage. I was in a split. Where you crashed out a couple nights ago. You started 7th I started 10th. I passed you and your driving was fine. I would say just practice your consistency a bit more rather then getting a super fast lap time. Anyway, look forward to seeing you on track again. Love the F3 content! Cheers

Racing incident Will. You're not a reckless driver. I've practiced with you on F3. These things happen. He setup his corner bad when he went on your outside left. Because of that he tried to maintain pace on the last corner as though he had the normal pace and ran wide, hit the gravel and gave it too much. happens all the time. I'm just someone that's honest. After watching you race and knowing how well you can do this, you're suffering from your own lack of confidence at the moment Will, and I also think you know this, it sees you actually expecting to be caught, and using your concentration on defending to the point you fall away from the leaders. 6 months go, you were chasing them down, Will. It's a good thing to be aware of the quick drivers, behind you, but not to the point you allow those ahead to get further ahead, more concentration on chasing them down, would see you improving your race pace, building your confidence and would also see you not needing to defend so much... You're excellent at chasing cars down Will if one behind is quick, and you start losing time defending there's nothing wrong with letting him through and chasing him instead, you remain much quicker, and you can choose where to get back past him. That your strength, clean and quick chasing others down.

And in the contact, yes it was a contact in my idea his car was spinning a little bit to compensate the right corner when he goes to the left, you have more grip in this Right Left transition so the contact is inevitable. But the crash he get after is not your fault, he goes to the grass and lost the balance. So in My opinion is an racing incident that sometime happens. IMO that was a racing incident, it happened so fast indeed. There was no time for you to react to him slowing down that suddenly. What you could learn there is that if people are off the racing line they may be slower than you expect them to be. But still, you want to race, so braking unessecarily is bad for your pace. I think what you can most improve on from this race is that difficult righthander where you seemed to lose so much time compared to the guy behind you. I think he braked less going into the first corner (by being braver?) and only braking in a straight line a bit before the second corner. So, you could try that as well, brake later or brake less into the first corner. FInally, I think he was wrong to call you out like that, but I can understand his frustrations of him not being able to overtake you for so long (and then crashing immediately after he does). Again, not your fault at all, a racing incident and clean driving all race (even him touching you briefly is a small incident. Avoidable, but nothing major).

Just watched this (been away from a keyboard for a while) and this was, in my opinion, no more nor less that a racing incident. A second a lap faster? No way. Did you misjudge the speed differential? Yes you did but so would most drivers when the lines were so different. Did the contact result in Sergio's accident? It didn't appear so to me - the contact seemed to be your front wing on his rear right tyre. He spun because he stepped over the kerb on the right-hander. It is possible that the damage algorithm assigned some damage to his right rear from the contact but that's almost certainly impossible to determine.

If he was that much faster than you he would have been able to get past easier. The only reason he thought he was faster was because he was in your draft, and you were still maintaining the gap to the car in front. It's ridiculous to imply that you should have just let him past because he was faster - that's not racing, that's just driving. This isn't a strategy race either, so you need to fight for positions. I think you defended very fairly and predictably. His contact with you on the straight was definitely not deliberate and he probably wasn't even aware he was drifting over to you. After his overtake he over-slowed for that corner because he thought you were on the outside, he wasn't expecting the cutback. And his ultimate crash wasn't at all caused by damage but because he ran slightly wide and put his left rear tyre on the grass - this might have been because he was distracted by the contact, but it wasn't your fault. To say you were a reckless driver is wholly inaccurate IMO.

For the peoples who are going to say that he didn’t brake checked you: once you have done an overtake in the first corner of two consecutive turns, you can’t just stomp on the brake to regain your ideal race line, you have to compromise the second corner in order to not blocking the guy you just overtake. Sergio basically did a move under braking. It’s one of those things that the real track teach you…or you will be always rear ended.

I think he slowed up more to ensure he didn’t run wide and squeeze me off the track. He probably thought I was still along side him. I don’t think it was intentional.

Looks like he let out because he was loose a tiny bit just as he transitioned in front of you...

Hi Will. Definitely not your fault in my opinion. He passed and you tucked in behind but he was still not on his line so he was sliding. You can see he was sliding in the slow moo. The issue was you were on the racing line and had the drive. I hate when faster drivers stuff up when leading and then blame when they get held up trying to get back to the front. If they didn’t stuff up they wouldn’t be in this position. 🤷♂️

Yeah not sure. These cars do move around a bit. I think I just misjudged how compromised his line was and how much he would have to slow to hit the next apex because he was leaving room for me on the outside.

Racing incident. No way would he have been 1s a lap quicker. He slowed up so he could hold the apex of the left turn and kill your momentum which you had in spades. Unfortunately you can not predict what someone is thinking and given how close you were to each other contact occurred 👍🏼

why do you shift so late? when the lights get to purple, that's the optimal time to shift. waiting for it hit the limiter (in real life) would be compromising. no engine (in real life) produces maximum power all the way to redline. even if it can rev that doesn't mean the optimal shifting point is at redline. it's always before it.

Looks like he deliberately just touched the brakes so you will touch his rear. Maybe because he wanted you out after this long fight.. you're definitely NOT the blame in this incident.

100% not reckless driving, he took a shallower line so had to go in slower then you, and that was your miss judgement, definitely a racing incident though

That contact is more of a racing incident as both of you are at fault to some degree. Him blaming you for ruining his race however is ludicrous as he was still able to continue after the contact. His misjudgment or lack of concentration led to him touching the grass at turn 10 and ultimately retiring his car. There didn't seem to be any visible physical damage to the rear of his car and your front wing only broke at the edge and didn't take the main element off completely, and yet you were still able to make it through t10 with probably about 60% of the normally available front grip. That crash into the wall after T10 was his doing and his doing alone

Love how people say they’re faster…when under the tow…of course you’re faster under tow. Nothing says when you’re in the lead lap that you have to pull over for another driver. If anything his driving was questionable, and intentionally aggressive, pinching you out. As for the the actual contact…he let off of the fuel…there is no question in an unpredictable manner…and if you were to review his previous laps, I would suggest it would show he would be in the fuel. Stop being so apologetic, it only encourages these whiny Senna wannabe’s to think everyone needs to just get out of their way.

I don't think you was driving reckless and I think Sergio was only a little bit faster in a few areas - no where near a second a lap !! I just think it all come down to him not getting a chance to overtake and he just got upset with you for holding your line, and you was not being over aggressive defending.. Just unlucky what happened, pure accident nothing else to say about it..

So, let me get this right, a car is able to veer across on the straight and make contact with.... but then, when they do the classic, park it on the apex and you make contact to the rear, thats much worse. Also, if he was that fast, (1 second per lap?) why was he behind you? If you miss qualifying, screw it up and so on, it nobody elses fault.

Definitely pretty harsh to call dangerous driving. It’s up to the person behind to pass. You should never just let someone pass you in a race. Defeats the purpose of racing. If he was that much faster he’d have made the pass happen. I guarantee you verstappen would have been able to make a pass happen. Also looked to me like he didn’t have damage and just spun himself. His car looked perfectly stable entering the corner before he induced understeer by getting on throttle too early. He then understeered wide, his rear left wheel touched the grass and he spun into the wall because of it. Seems to me like he was just complaining and trying to blame you for his mistake.

Having said that the contact was definitely your fault.
