Interestingly, AD&D originally had a much stronger Sword and Sorcery influence as Gygax was more a fan of Howard, Moorcock, Leiber, et.al, than the heroic fantasy of Tolkien. It seems D&D drifted more towards high fantasy over the years but I always preferred the grittier feel of older editions. Thanks for covering this!

"Toothy maw..." somewhere Matt Mercer's ears just perked up and he's smiling but doesn't know why. I'm pretty much on the outside looking in when it comes to D&D and OSR since I have yet to actually play at a table, but Hyperborea seems like an incredible passion project. It's not just an OSR or tabletop game, it's a world and tribute to old school D&D and the sword & sorcery genre as a whole, which I've grown to appreciate even more than high fantasy this past year. On that note, I have this channel to thank for my interest in OSR, as well as H.P. Lovecraft and Robert E. Howard. Thank you, and God bless.

I remember we had just bought the Unearthed Arcana and then the second edition stuff came out. I also remember the four coloured magic items book in faux leather that we got. We bought some of the second edition stuff but when they started dropping race/class manuals, we stopped buying. We could tell then that the game was going to cost way more than we were playing having gone now out into the work world. But for a few brief years a decade ago we went back to Advanced and played again. It was a blast and your videos on these D&D topics make me remember the best days of my younger life. Thanks for that and keep up the great work. Nice to see the channel growing, you were way less than 5k when I subbed.

I am a huge fan of Howard, Ashton-Smith, and Lovecraft. My current campaign is a 1/2e ADnD run that has a lot of these authors elements in them including Dwellers of the Forbidden City (inspired by Red Nails) where the Yuan Ti are introduced and I’ve included a storyline including Rhan Tegoth (a Great Old One from The Horror in the Museum). It’s set in a land based on Shem and Turan. This work would be an excellent addition to my collection.

You are awesome and I'd love to play in your campaign. I'm using modiphius Conan 2d20 for my own campaign but those books are also a great gazetteers. What if you put a Thog (from The Slithering Shadow/Xuthal of the Dusk, also appearing in The Black Stone, and has a lot similarities to Shoggoths in lovecraft). Give such a monster a pit and a captive audience to eat/sacrifice) as a kind of random wandering X-Factor of fear to the inhabitants

@@AAron-gr3jk The Black Stone is a real favorite of mine. So creepy and existentially dreadful. I am going for a campaign where Old Gods weren’t worshipped so long ago that they aren’t still active in the world. The Forbidden City provides a perfect focal point. Weird, ancient Snake People Race, mutants, Saurians, impossibly old survivals from past millennia. It’s got such great bones to build on.

@@captcorajus Because why should it be? It's not a memorized spell, it's fighting technique. If you have the opportunity to get a new shield between fights (or even during one, if it's not one of the style that takes significant time to strap on properly) there's no reason besides "balance" that it shouldn't be useable again. And balance in OSR is a weak, weak excuse for anything.

The only thing is that having all these traditional D&D classes in a sword & sorcery setting starts to make it feel like D&D and not sword & sorcery to me, despite the removal of demi-human races and such. You don't typically see Paladins, Clerics, Rangers, and such in the works of Robert E. Howard, L. Sprague De Camp, Lin Carter, etc.
