Helpful exercises for hyperextended legs. Improve your balance & alignment.
Hyperextended legs are valued in classical ballet for their aesthetic appeal. If you do not have hyperextended legs, you may wish you did. But did you know that they can be difficult to control?
In this video, we will demonstrate two exercises for strengthening and feeling the long connected muscles in the legs. You will need a long theraband. The third section focuses on the VMO which is an essential muscle for stability and protects the knee.
Dancers with hyperextended legs are usually hypermobile which brings a host of challenges-- maintaining turnout, balance, and strength. The "gesture" leg will remain fully extended into its full range and present a beautiful line. However, the support leg must maintain a straight line in order to function well in ballet.
Watch this video to learn exercises that will not only strengthen your hyperextended legs but will increase your awareness of a straight line.
