Don't, Hyperkin did NOT make a worthy product here. They use stolen software to play cartridges with public emulation software. It's not a real console, it just emulates the games back using cartridges as a medium. On top of this, they RAISED the price of the system once it was revealed that the code was taken from someone else.

Wanna play retro ? you can build a "retro console emulator" with Raspberry Pi and install RetroPi (multiple gaming emulator) for $35. Or you can just install emulator such as MAME on your PC for free.
@Siknik64
9 жыл бұрын
Or if you're feeling REALLY brave, you can use that Raspberry Pi hooked up to an arcade cabinet shell and play all your arcade games with a REAL cabinet with a built-in computer doing all the processing power.
@ErnestJay88

***** Raspberry Pi didn't have enough processing power for arcade games especially games that released after year 2000 (3D arcade games) If i was build an "Arcade Machine" or "MAME Cabinet" i will put a full size desktop PC inside that cabinet.
@Siknik64

IndraEMC Well, according to Wikipedia (not a reliable source) but still. The RaspPi's GPU has the same capabilies as a Xbox from 2001. So with that in mind, it should be able to handle earlier games pretty well, which is fine since a good chunk of Arcade classics are 2D. If it can run Hydro Thunder at a decent speed, I'd be happy.
@amshermansen
9 жыл бұрын
***** The Xbox One (As in the original) had more than enough power to emulate anything from Arcade all the way up to a few select PS1 titles. So if the Pi really conforms to those specs it should definitely run them fine :D
@Siknik64
9 жыл бұрын
Mansen Yes, but you're forgetting the Xbox original ran an Nvidia GPU chipset NV2A, this Raspberry Pi has a broadcom chipset which I'm sure isn't as well optimized for gaming, let alone doing any texture processing. Additionally reports suggest that this GPU also has a lack of debugging support which makes developing compatible software a challenge.

I wish Hyperkin would make a console that could play old disc based console games like PS1, PS2, GameCube (maybe even Wii?), Original Xbox, Sega Saturn, and Sega Dreamcast. And you know what? What the hey! Why not slap a 3DO in there while we're at it? That way all of our favorite old disc console games could actually look good on HDTVs. And it could be called the Retron CDS (compact disc system), although PS2 & Xbox games were made with DVDs the name CDS just sounds better.

Please note: the legality of emulation is actuallty very simple. If you can prove that you posess an original copy of the game, you are entitled to copies of said game. And fortunately, a copy is declared to be a "byte-by-byte replication of the data on the cartridge". Therefore the only thing that's illegal is piracy, and that's been known for ages. Emulate on PC, folks! It's legal!

Regarding the stolen code issue, nobody in the emulation scene is happy about it, and like most people, I'd recommend using Retroarch on PC.

A Question for Luke: I think this is a nifty idea, and does save on room vs all the consoles. What advantages do you think it has over emulators? I use various emulators for classic games, and I don't consider it illegal as I own the games I download anyway, but I find it easier to use ROMS vs cartridges. Another side benefit is emulators that allow enchantment of the old games. Take Dolphin for example, you can use various features to enhance the games visuals, which sometimes works and other times doesn't, but it's a nice tool regardless. I can load up a game in seconds, choose a save state, then relax on the bed while playing the games in 1080p most of the time. I just use my TV as a 3rd monitor on the other side of the room and it works great for this, and the controller reaches fine. So I see little use for this, especially at that price, but nice review regardless.

I can definitely see the appeal for this. I've been collecting a bunch of classic games for NES, SNES, Genesis, Famicom, Super Famicom, Game gear, and Gameboy for the past year. Collecting all of the consoles individually for this is pretty freaking expensive. Yes. You can use emulators (considering that's what the retron 5 is doing) but building a collection of games is fun, and this is a convenient way to play all of the cartridges that you've collected. If you want to play retro games in HD and you don't own any carts, get an emulator on your computer. However if you own carts and already have a collection in your hands, then this is a good way to play all of those games.

I just took all of the ROMs from all of the old systems and dumped them onto an old laptop I have. Now I can play more than a Retron 5 allows, there's no lag, and I have USB versions of all of the controllers for the old systems. It's portable, functional, and costs $0 since I already owned the laptop and don't need cartridges. In my opinion, that's just the best way to go.

I am a hardcore retro gamer with a rather large game and console collection ranging from the NES to the N64/PS1, I own all of the platforms this unit supports. When I was first made aware of the Retron 5, long before it was released, I was admittedly excited. Mainly for the HDMI support and some features only available on PC emulators up until now. Then it was released ... Thankfully, I am not an early adopter in the retro gaming market like I am in the PC hardware market. The software issues, sometimes poor emulation, latency, save game corruption, and downright abysmal included controller totally killed it for me. Especially when considering the asking price for the unit. To be perfectly, for 16-bit and earlier emulation, there are much better alternatives for the tech savvy. From something very inexpensive like the Raspberry Pi, to something more powerful (and much more expensive ) like an Intel NUC, Gigabyte Brix, or an HTPC that can not only be used for classic console emulation but so much more. Or even an inexpensive booksize PC that you can pickup from Zotak, Foxconn, or Shuttle. So while the Retron 5 does have it's up sides, I will stick to my original hardware and/or HTPC for my emulation needs. Great video Luke, you covered all the bases, and summed up pretty much how I feel about it. =]

i use the included controller for speeding up games like final fantasy using those small extra buttons. during cut scene style attacks, or just to speed up the whole battle it works very well, can speed run through rpgs. other than that yes its a pile of crap, but if you want the speed up and save state on the controller then you have to use it, its not horrible for an rpg anyway. another thing is the controller ports, you can play any system with any controller and no need for a 4 score to play 4 player bomberman or whatever, just grab 2 nes and 2 snes game pads. you can map the controls any way you want. i have never had the system destroy save files, i just recently realized my save game for zelda alttp was on the retron and i was playing on the real system in my game room, so i had to transfer to the cart, worked fine for me, worked for super metroid too. also you didn't mention that, you can add translations to japanese games to the sd card, it can save you a lot of money buying japanese carts over american, its insane. this also works with ever drive carts, thats where you have a cartridge that runs roms from a loaded sd card, but runs it on the system. it does not work with a lot of unlicensed nes games, and games that have a pass through, i dont know if super noahs ark works, but i know for sure that sonic3& knuckles does not work, sonic 3 works and soninc and knuckles works, but playing sonic 3 all the way through knuckles is a slightly different game, different level design, bosses and ending for various characters. id say thats the worst offense of the machine, besides the controllers d pad and weird shoulder buttons.

Maybe maybe not. I'm not much older than you but I enjoy a lot of games that are older than me, or were for systems I didn't grow up with. - I grew up on the GBA/GBC, then finally got a Gamecube when I was 11. A fun game can still be a fun game years later (provided if the game has aged well). Honestly emulation, or compilation discs are a good way to start to see if your ok with retro gaming. I think "Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection is like $20 on 360/PS3 if you have one of those. Its a compilation of 48 classic Sega games spanning a variety of genres.

depends? do you like HARD games? or do you just like to coast through with little effort? if you like HARD, you will enjoy retro. plus a lot of the games were just simply fun, regardless of the shit graphics. look at what FTL and minecraft have done, same idea, if the game is fun, it doesnt NEED amazing graphics. (of course its better if it does not look like dogshit, but i will always take fun over pretty) oh, and stay away from anything published by LJN, they were assholes who would buy up licenses from popular movies and such and churn out steaming piles of shit, most of them buggy to the point of unplayable, and the ones that were not buggy were just shitty and not fun, or has little to do with the licensed content.

Let's be honest here, you will be disappointed.. I know graphic aren't everything but returning from games today to 25 years old games will be just painfull, especially because you never played them before so you won't have any nostalgia playing them.. Sure there is a LOT of amazing NES, SNES, Genesis etc etc games but I highly doubt you will get any enjoyment out of them because of simple graphics, sound and gameplay.. try emulating some then see for your self

The multiple cartridge problem: There are only so many pins on the processor for i/o. I bet most of them are in parallel across all the cartridge slots and they get re-used where they can. More than one cartridge installed would interfere with the data being sent by the active cartridge and the processor -- it would take a lot of support circuitry to isolate each slot (think like plx pci-e lane multipliers)...huge extra expense for something this cost.

Now let's see them come up with one that can emulate console generations from the 90's and early 2000's. N64, Playstation, PS2, (Dreamcast?), etc. Didn't mention the Xbox because I expect mountains of legal problems for any attempt to create an emulator for any of them (probably for Xbox, highly likely for the Xbox 360, and DEFINITELY for the Xbox One).

LinusTechTips the reason some games wont run is because some of the cartridges had special chips inside of them that the emulation folks never bothered to figure out since only a small list of games used them. or in the nes case some games used mappers that emulation doesn't really support. I know it's hard to find an emulator that will run mapper 20 games such as super Mario bro's 2 the lost levels. the super Nintendo had a fx chip that they used on certain games such as doom, donkey kong country 2, starfox, etc.
@Katastrophe9009

I see the appeal of devices like this. But overall, it's still much easier and in my opinion, better to just emulate games on a PC or smart device like a tablet or phone. You can argue about the legalities all you want, but the "legal" alternatives to playing retro games are not only a pain in the ass to deal with most times, but it's actually becoming less and less possible for people to even do these days (most newer TV's are ditching RCA connections all together, and input lag on modern TVs is a big issue sometimes.) On top of all this, actually finding a real physical copy of some classics (such as Earthbound) is nearly impossible for most people, meaning the only way you really even can experience the game is digitally. Services like Nintendo's Virtual Console are a step in the right direction, but they're limited to the select few games that Nintendo puts on the service, if you wanted to play an obscure childhood favorite, don't hold your breath waiting for it to come out on the eShop. I don't feel the least bit guilty for emulating games, because there's very rarely a fully legal alternative that works as easy as emulation. Most of the games I play on emulators, I either actually own, or HAD owned previously, the rest are either expensive, rare, or games that never saw a digital re-release.
