I will totally use this for summer if I'm carrying a ton of stuff for luxury camping or a weeks worth of food. If I only had this one pack, I would obviously use it all year round. Generally my summer load-out is very small and compact with everything fitting in a 36L pack. Most of the time I'm re-supplying every 3-4 days if doing a longer trail and still don't need the 80L that this pack offers. My main reason for getting this pack was for a lightweight winter load-out, which is still bulky although light weight, so having a high volume pack is very nice. If I only did summer/3 season, I would have got the 3400.

This pack would be perfect for winter with detachable belt and proper (non-center) loop. I have similar pack from a private garage, but i can just use belt to pull the sled(and have pockets with snacks, navigation and other things on me), while the pack rides on sled. When i need to carry the pack on myself, i assemble it back.

It's not an ultra-light backpack anymore, it doesn't have a good storage space, it's not comfortable because the shoulder straps and waist belt are thick, and I don't understand why I use this bag. I'd rather use Gregory Octar, everything is better than this bag, but it's much cheaper.
@escapetheindoors

I personally don't like the arc on the Optic/Octal. There's also 20L less space than the 4400 for about the same weight and I wouldn't trust plowing through trees with the Optic material/mesh pockets. If you like the Gregory than you should get it and of course stop using the HMG if you don't find it comfortable :-) Thanks for watching!

Actually it was a tough call between this and the Mariposa. I really just wanted a simple pack with a stupid amount of space that I could just throw stuff in on a frigid winter morning and it would fit. Also no netting to get caught on downed tree branches while snowshoeing. Additionally the pack material soaks up less water/wet snow than the GG fabric. However there are many features of the Mariposa I wish I had, like the sit pad holder, the comfortable straps and the additional pockets. I'm still eyeing the Mariposa...perhaps during a sale.

How was your experience with sizing the pack? Does your shoulder straps stay parallel to the ground like how they show on their sizing video on the HMG site?
@escapetheindoors
2 жыл бұрын
I ordered a size larger than I have in other packs. The straps do stay parallel to the ground which is important for most packs, especially without any load lifters. I did have to raise the sternum strap to get it where I wanted. Definitely measure correctly and if you have questions HMG will probably be more than happy to answer them!

I have the HMG 4400 SW pack and think it is a great but not perfect winter hiking pack here in the Northeast. Two areas for improvement, 1 move the ice axe loop off to the side, not dead center where it is now. In its current position, the shaft of ice axe compressed that center back pocket in half, where your crampons would be stored. Two, add a set of 1 inch loops to the rear of hip belt for pulk sled hauling. The extra straps that can be purchased from HMG can strap snowshoes to the back, particularly if the ice axe was positioned alongside the center pocket.
@escapetheindoors
3 жыл бұрын
That is a good point about the ice axe loop, I would prefer it on the side of the rear pocket. It's not really designed to be a true winter pack but more of an all around pack geared towards more general hiking/distance backpacking. The space in the 4400 allows room for bulky winter quilts and gear. They would probably recommend the Ice Pack or Porter for a more winter mountaineering/skiing pack. I think if I pulled a pulk I probably wouldn't have this big of a pack haha Thanks for watching!!!

How many liters does it compress/roll down to? Like on their website it says the 3400 rolls down to roughly the size of the 2400
@escapetheindoors
3 жыл бұрын
I don't know the exact answer to that, however I've been using it on day hikes while base camping and I personally haven't felt it to be bulky or wish I had purchased the 3400. The compression straps work really well at cinching it down. Perhaps since the 3400 rolls down to 2400, the 4400 may roll down to 3400? Not sure.

DCF is not good with abrasion at all. My HMG southwest got permanent scuffs just being rubbed with a sponge ! The absolve side but very lightly with no pressure at all. Not it’s really rough on that patch also I wish they’d put buttons at the outer pockets

Totally agree, which is why I haven't went for DCF packs in the past. The hybrid fabric on the HMG packs help, but if I was planning on doing a lot of bushwhacking or rubbing against rocks, I would probably grab my ULA with its ROBIC fabric. This pack, for me, is about size to weight and simplicity.

@@escapetheindoors yup - I love these packs don’t get me wrong but I was shocked at how readily it scuffed just gently gently rubbing a sponge over a stain I tried to get out of a white pack - the stain is permanent btw seems anything that touches the fabric instantly becomes permanent in way I’ve never seen with nylon etc too

Depends on what your context is. Are you using the 2400 in multi-day winter trips with temps around 0f, snowshoeing through 3 feet of snow? If yes, then that's impressive! For most of the time, it's a ton of unnecessary space, but the beauty is that it compacts down so much that if you need the space occasionally and can only have one pack it's great. Currently my favorite for the balance of space/weight/simplicity/durability. For summer though, my go-to is the Gossamer Gear Kumo 36.

@@escapetheindoors no not at all. Love the support potential. I am researching and debating between the 4400 or the LiteAF 46L, or the new Outdoor Vitals ShadowLight 60l...I’m usually the guy that ends up carry the brunt of outings, so the extra volume will come in handy.

@@billybastar4022 I have not had the pleasure of using a LiteAF pack (though would love to). If you're heading out in winter (0f and snow) I believe volume is a big consideration.
