Welcome everyone to my channel, Space Remote Sensing and GIS. Today, we'll explore how to calculate vegetation indices over hyperspectral drone data to assess crop stress using ENVI Vegetation Index Calculator.
To start, utilize the Vegetation Index Calculator in ENVI to compute relevant vegetation indices for your imagery. Upon selecting an input file, ENVI automatically identifies the available VIs that can be calculated from the dataset. You can then choose the specific VIs for ENVI to compute.
Additionally, consider the Spectral Indices tool, which offers a wide array of vegetation indices beyond those provided by the Vegetation Index Calculator.
ENVI's VIs enable the detection of various vegetation properties, indicating their presence and relative abundance. However, it's important to note that the application of VIs for analyzing vegetative conditions yields relative, not absolute, results. These results provide a theoretical range from low to high values, indicating the distribution or stress levels of vegetation.
In areas that are shadowed or highly shaded within the input file, insufficient light may prevent the vegetation signal from registering accurately for the VIs. Even with atmospheric correction, these areas may still not provide enough quality for accurate representation of vegetation conditions.
