To clarify, this dam is in Utah, not Colorado. The "Upper Colorado Region" they mentioned refers to the Colorado River, which runs through several states.

Lake Oroville took us by surprise. The soil studies done when the spillway was built did not accurately predict soil erosion beneath them that undermined it.

It's not entirely the Bureau's fault: Congress has been criminally stingy for decades when it comes to funding national infrastructure. When you need a multi-million dollar spillway replacement, but you only get a few hundred thousand dollars, gluing the cracks is the best you can hope for.

You would have thought BuRec Bureaucrats would have learned their lesson with Lake Powell’s spillway issues in 1983 or Lake Oroville’s more recent spillway issues that cost more to fix than the entire dam cost to build. Really don't be cheap it's almost 100 dam years old and needs updating replace it with standard new modern equipment for are safety we pay taxes for a reasonable amount so replace it don't slap a bandad on it. I've seen to many go out this way oh we fixed the cracks. Like um cracks are there for a reason a little is fine but fixed and reinforced cracks ya no I'm not ok with that.

I'm surprised to hear no mention of the Army Corp of Engineers. I was under the impression that they managed critical infrastructure like this. Dams are not to be trifled with. Refurbishment should be scheduled for as soon as possible, not three years down the line when long-term rainfall has been so unpredictable.

No one wants to replaced aged infrastructure until absolutely necessary. Trouble is when it’s absolutely necessary an emergency occurs at the same time. Mother Nature loves surprises. We need to be more proactive vs reactive. Proactive repairs are costly but much less so vs reactive repairs with subsequent damage caused by waiting. Spending money can be readily seen with a new bridge vs some reservoir hiding up in the mountains.

No one has a requirement to do the job and schedule real repairs because they are to busy squirreling away the money into the employee retirement systems. Less work more money and after all they want to remove all the dams anyway so why fix them. Just patch them until they can retire.

I'm amazed that nationally/globally wide that when dry seasons hit, inland waterways are not recut. When areas are dry or even relatively dry, dig out the creeks, rivers, ponds ect. That rich soil could be used for farmland. The tuns of soil removed will allow for more water to be displaced where you want it.

They don't have time to do entire reports on lakes in California when the local lakes are in trouble. They even talk about the Upper Colorado River Basin... That's not in California. If they do the math right they estimate the snow pack and begin draining the reservoir early to prevent excess flows in spill ways and still have a full volume at the end of spring. Only incompetent fools will wait until hi flow melt season to open the spill ways.
