It's easy, Jafro. We watch your videos because you're a genius at what you do, and we can relate to it with the low budget. That hunch on shaking the wiring harness for instance, caught me totally by surprise. Not only are you good working on the cars, but you're great at filming the action in detail, editing to not have long boring parts, and putting an informative narration on top of it, with a little humor. It's very rare to find all these things combined.

Yeah, totally. I am. I've found that it's how I'm the happiest. I'm a successful, dynamic problem solver that can fix anything and any situation, and every woman I've ever met has abused that by seeking every possible problem they can find to test my limits. If there are any ladies out there reading this, that's not how you keep a man. Just because he can doesn't mean he should. I'll own where I'm at fault. These days I run from the damsel in distress routine because it's a crystal clear sign of mental incompetence.
@Jafromobile

...of course, the mental incompetence part includes me. They're always the ones I find myself attracted to. It's the well adjusted, successful women who seem to find me annoying... so it's gotta be me. By far. No question.

I can relate. The crazy tatoo'd girls with blue hair like me too. I find that because I am so preoccupied with other things (ME degree, cars, work, friends), these are the type of women that have the balls to break with tradition and seek ME out. So I just roll with it because they're attractive and it doesn't take a lot of mental capacity to maintain whatever we end up doing, and I can focus on other things. Of course it always fizzles out because they are crazy and I'm not truly interested. I think it just takes a lot of effort on your part to sort through a bunch of traditional girls to find the one you click with. But who the hell wants to do that when there is hp to be made and tires to melt! Keep on keepin on jafro.

You are well trained. I know because I'm a retired ASE Master Technician who had one of the best comeback ratios in the nation. When I worked on a car it stayed fixed, my repairs almost never came back. I've been to the General Motors Training Center in Atlanta, back in the 90's when I worked for Youmans Chevrolet in Macon, Georgia and had many special training classes there. One thing I have that I haven't seen you have (yet) is vibration diagnosis and repair. Just FYI, that's a good one to get if you don't yet have it, don't know why I even mentioned it. My Advanced Special Electronics training helped me a lot with these electrical bugs you seem to have. BTW excellent diagnosis using the wiring diagram and recognizing the common grounds and how a bad connection could throw off the computer by sending electrons off in the wrong direction, so-to-speak. Given the history with some poor quality wiring you already found, and you may say, "Ya... SH!T", it might do for you to take a look at some of those mods, the MAF was it, and if those parameters and connections are good, here it comes, first easy thing is (and I'm sure you already looked at it) check your ground triad. The batt to frame, batt to eng, batt to body; the frame to eng, frame to body; and the eng to body. All your harness grounds depend on this triad and even though one can be bad and it not affect the computer, let another get bad and, well, you know. Also some wiring harnesses take ground for the fuse panel from a fusible link to the battery too, so check those two connections to the fuse panel as well as the ground triad. If no problems found... Here's the last (and most dreaded) suggestion; take out your wiring harness, lay it on a table and remove all the tape and looming. Check any splices, especially common power, 5v most suspicious, 12v a little less, and the ground splices. Check out all of your PCM wiring from PCM to component. If there's an iffy (or spliced) wire, replace the whole wire, don't add splices! (maybe check that MAF wiring?) Every spliced wire adds to the total resistance in the circuit and the computer will be assuming an already calculated resistance for that circuit. Check every inch of the wires looking for brittle feeling hard spots or spongy, too flexible spots. Those wires going to your window motor looked like they got too hot, not surprising for a bad motor to run high current but the fuse should have blown before it melted the wire's insulation. There is a such a thing as cheap, faulty wires. You're a good technician, don't call yourself a mechanic. All a mechanic can do is throw parts at a problem. A technician understands what makes a system work and when he can't get the right part, he can often make another part do the job the system needs done. You've demonstrated that to me.

+Jason Drew I did shoot footage, and the best of it was from between the staging lanes. I didn't make a showing with any of the cars that have been on this channel yet, but it's inevitable. I swear, it was like incognito mode. Only one of the vendors there that I shopped with had any clue who I was. I know I was surrounded by people who watch my videos, but people only recognized me by my hands or my voice. After I realized this, I didn't shut up, and I apologize to the kind gentleman who put up with my tired babble until 3 am. ;) It was awesome getting to meet Tom, and I'd like to go on the record saying I regret not arriving sooner, and having not spent more time rolling around the event with him. He's a great host, a positive, energetic doood, and if it weren't for his invite I don't know if I'd have made the thousand mile trek. Now that I have, I will be back, I'll be better prepared, I'll bring toys, and I've started working on that camera time so that maybe next time people will recognize me. lol!

+FrequencyOfThought It's a Galant 2.0L NA block with a DOHC 1.6L Hyundai head that's a knock-off of the 4g61t design. Turbo crank, Galant pistons and rods. Transmission is a F5M33 out of a '90 Plymouth Laser. The body's a '92 1st-gen Elantra, it has cut springs from a 1g Eclipse, Mitsubishi EXPO front brakes, hubs and knuckles with Nissan Altima LE wheels and the standard 1.6L Hyundai axles. The engine harness is patched into the Elantra's ECU and interior harness, and it came out of a 2.0L Hyundai Sonata. The front bumper is off of a Subaru Legacy Wagon. The steering wheel is from a Mitsubishi Mirage. It had a Subaru stereo in it when I first found it sitting in my driveway with the keys in it, but I changed that.

Jafro you simply can't go this long without a video again.... ;-) Glad to see her running down the track again, I can't wait to see the Colt, GSX, and the GVR4 get some love. I guess the next thing to happen to the Elantra is the water/meth install? Being we have a we bit of knock now. I am curious to see how you install that kit on this particular setup, being you have the pristine ETS throttle body elbow. Many people I know bought the same AEM water/meth kit you purchased and can't get it to work correctly for some reason. Glad to see another video, it's entertaining to see someone explain in great detail how to fix common problems, or not so common problems. Keep them coming, thanks again for all you do for the DSM/CSM communities. Did you modify your BOV any? To handle over stock levels of boost, I've always heard the OEM Mitsu BOV's can't handle much more than stock boost levels. If you did modify it, what did you do to make it handle more boost? Lastly, do you run pure 93 octane gas? Or that E10 93 octane fuel, the government has bestowed upon us? Just curious, I am sure that would effect things negatively in this setup being it's not made to run on corn.

I love watching the Hyundai series but I'd love to see other projects unfold as well. Bring on the winter projects! How is the Colt coming along? I would like to see that thing roll down the street, it would become a whole different animal all together. I'm not really familiar with DSM's, rather, I tend to stick to Hondas and Honda cycles, but your videos make complete sense and are always logical. I love watching how you go about solving your (seemingly) ongoing problems, which is one of the reasons why I watch. Hell, i've even looked up a couple DSM's and considered getting a Talon just because Id have more relevant information regarding DSM's. I'm starting to scroll thru DSM forums looking up specs and information. But don't tell my friends, they will think I have turned to the dark side.... No matter, Props to you for the perseverance!I do have a question for you. I know this engine has had some high oil pressure issues since you've gotten it, so my question is: how would using a lighter weight oil effect the oil pressure IN YOUR CASE? I know in worn out engines, you can use a thicker oil and it will help bring back some oil pressure, but i'm not sure how it would work the other way around. Cant wait to see what you will have for us next! -Michael
@Jafromobile
9 жыл бұрын
+Anthony Townley I sorta need to run thicker oil in this old worn out beast. I have 12 PSI oil pressure at warm idle, and 78 PSI at red line now after the rebuild. That's with 40W. The modifications I did in my oil system videos, coupled with the looser mains and rod oil clearances... Those seemed to do the trick rather nicely. ;)

And it all comes down to a wiggle test and a wiring diagram. It's nice when it's simple and just takes some time, but sometimes multiple things are connected causing issues. I'll have to take another actual close look at that diagram, but what you said really makes sense.
@DENicholsAutoBravado

+DE Nichols So, I guess if a little power is sneaking to anwyhere on those grounds and it'd cause a variance in those sensors. It's crazy how adjustments you made so many months ago (TPS angle I think you adjusted) on those sensors were partly because of a fault that was probably there the whole time.
@DENicholsAutoBravado
9 жыл бұрын
+DE Nichols I'm throwing it out there and taking it back that one of the components could be bad to cause those problems. They behave way to consistently despite some inconsistency, so I really believe a wire is worked raw and a bit open in one of those harnesses. I mean we watched you test each of those components, or was it just the TPS that was smooth and flawless?
@VenturiLife
9 жыл бұрын
Did you say... TPS Reports? I'd also be on the hunt for bad capacitors as they can cause some seriously weird issues. Had to replace bad-caps with Rubicon or Nichicon caps, but it's so worth it. Older electronics of this era are probably susceptible.

Welp time for my next insight as another (e)lantra owner. It's funny how these things are lining up as not joking, just today redid my drivers door wiring harness (manual window so only 4 wires) and can confirm that the wires are disintegrating, the entire door harness all the way to the plug inside the car was just like dry play dough, smelled like it too. I'd keep an eye on that, even some of the wires that were totally taped up were already showing totally bare copper and really risking a short. You've been fine for 6 years so far, but who knows how bad that's gotten by now. Was actually my first time totally redoing even a small car harness like that and am proud of how it came out, hope to learn a lot from this car.

You can make a bead roller very easily from a horse shoe shaped piece of metal (i used a random piece of bent tubing that i think i got from an old push bike) and two rollers off cheapBay. For home grade stuff, it's pretty much as good as it gets. Oh and you apply pressure using a bench vise (mine has the grooves to fit pipe in it).

The Elantra is fun, and a hell of a sleeper, but some of us out here are gettin' serious Colt withdrawal, not to mention how bad we wanna try out some of that good VR4 stuff. So, whatever winter projects are on the plate sound cool.

I am really curious to see what is going on with your harness. I wonder if the harness had a bad connection before and caused the engine problems. GL tracking her down. It seems like you at least have a good grasp of what is going on with it, and the steps required to rectify the issue. Will it be a pain in the butt? Usually is dealing with intermittent electrical. will it be worth it? you bet ya. =) Thanks for posting love your videos. would probably probe pin 2 and 4 of the TPS at the same time. wiggle, wiggle, wiggle, 2 changes, 4 doesn't, just found the bad connection. short cut to eliminate everything up to there at the same time. "this is pretentious of me of course, do to the fact i cant put a meter on it myself, not to mention making the assumption that the connection to the ecu is ok, and you don't have mid harness poo poo going on." sorry if i overstepped. Anyways. looking forward to seeing the little beast killin it.!!

Yeah I feel ya on bug squashing, i've passed a year of having my car together and still havent got everything ironed out, I have a bad knock sensor, and some kind of stumble that may also be the knock sensor. I also have wiring and vacuum hose routing that needs fixed before I'm satisfied, and the trans fixed so I have 2nd and 4th gear back. Front axles are junk too :( It's a Mitsu, eventually it works, there's just an indeterminate amount of "sorta working" that you have to deal with before that.

Is the hard pipe bead-rollled there? (edit: as I continue watching this vid, I see you do exactly this, LOL! Carry on...) If not, that's a great fix and you should never have it blow off again so long as you tighten down the clamps good. Also, maybe use t-bolt clamps instead of worm-screw ones? On my Mazdaspeed 3 that I have dialed in to 25psi, bead-rolling and t-bolt clamps have saved me a ton of hassle. Great vid!

Your ignition maps should be smooth and progressive, you don't want to have any cliffs or spikes or big jumps from one site to the next, the factory tunes usually have a lot of those, they are there to deal with emission, also less ignition timing helps bring boost on, less is more.
