I'm a retired bed bugger owner operator who pulled for Allied Van Lines. I too knew how to drive in the snow. But after years of getting cocky about driving in snow and ice. I jacked knifed in a weigh station in Wisconsin, along with a UPS wiggle wagon, and a Flat Bed hauling rolled steel. So never say never. It can happen to anyone no matter how good a driver you are. P.S. love your channel!

Exactly. Never, ever ignore chain laws. It isn't worth it. It doesn't matter if you make it through because you can still get a huge ticket, and your insurance costs go up, and if you haul for a company they'll have plenty to say to you.

Drove east into Denver just this week and while I’ve driven the 70 a dozen times or so, as soon as I got to the Eisenhower Johnson tunnel I just said to myself “it’s amazing that humans thought it was a good idea to punch a hole though the mountain, AND THEN DID IT.” Pretty freaking amazing. What a drive too, so so pretty. I have yet to do it in the summer though… lol I’ve only had to chain up once luckily.

California is a different animal when it comes to chain laws. The temperature fluctuates from the bottom of Sacramento to Reno. It could be dry powder snow to wet slippery. I’ve heard it all. “I’ve driven in 1 to 3 ft of snow with no chain law and made it 100 miles....but it’s the same driver doing 15 mph with hazards on. Don’t confuse California law to any other state.

Back when I used to run the west coast I had a set of cable chains with cams for tightening. They were great for severe ice but not so great for heavy snow or anything else. But on paved roads with ice they were the cat's meow. They ran extremely smooth and you could run them at much higher speeds.

Hello Mike, the standard Volvo configuration of the Jake Brake is that if the drive wheels stopped rotating due to the Jake Brake, the Jake will be automatically be switched off. I know very little about winter rockies trucking through the snow. I respect the professional drivers like you. The law says to chain up or face the man with the badge, gun, and ticket book then the judge. Or worse cause an accident. I get it just put on chains when the highway patrol says to do it. Make money on the road and keep driving. Thanks for this incite into crossing the rockies in a snowstorm in the winter on a slippery interstate 70.

12/26/23 My boy just came through there leaving the Denver area last night. He said traffic came to a 5mph crawl on the 7% downgrade that really wore on him bad. He had to pull off to the side for about 30 minutes to let his brakes cool down; that was just long enough for two snow plows to come through and he immediately dropped in behind them. He has said for several years that if you have to use chains then it’s too bad to be on the road.

How you are winded with the elevation is like my husband. Several times he has had to pull over to rest after the leaving Tahoe. This maybe a factor of why we don't go up anymore, also because we have been remodeling this old house (1906s, 1950s and 1970s....3 parts). I hope you make it fine to Las Vegas on Sunday night. We are done for now with our storm. This week should be fine in N. CA. Can't wait to see your drive up to WA. We have taken the train through there in the snow and that is a beautiful ride too.

One night driving in snow in pa, I went to pass the truck ahead of me, following the plowed road. Then I see grass in the bare areas, instead of asphalt. Even the truck I was passing was in the grass, we both slowed down a bit until the plowed area got back on the road. I have cussed you guys out a lot (to myself, not on the radio), but know you have a hard job. Pa used to pull in the plows at midnight, and then send them out again at 3Am. never made sense to me. I have a curious question for you Riding Shotgun, regarding the tire chains related to their millimeter link diameter sizing that you typically use and if they are just a twisted link style or have a bar or stud welded onto the cross chains. Possibly an odd question and I won't claim to have a lot of chaining experience but years ago I did work in the oil patch one winter and chaining up for the bush roads/trails we always ended up on was always a given and dual chains on drives what was always used, singles obviously on the steers ( I only drove a tandem body job for that job ) but within the frac crew any tractor trailers would be chained on both drive axles with duel chains and the size material they used is not light at all as light chains would rip to pieces they said. 8mm size trygg brand is what they normally used. Just get the impression that highway haulers even up here in Alberta Canada buy light chains as well and hope not to need them much at all. By the way some years ago I had done a bit of exploring in Colorado, various four wheel drive trails in the Taylor area and also around Ouray and yup have driven the 550 although that's much safer then the places I went but still a little freaky none the less !

If you had Rocky mnts. You would understand. One truck without chains spins out on a hill . Truck usually drifts sideways when spinning. The whole dam road is closed for hours while they try to get truck to shoulder. Chains are a way of life in the north west. Put em in on and haul your load.
@wxx3

@@mikegoliath8678 You're missing the point. Having lived in the North East, CO and CA, trucks that spin out, block the roads everyplace. The difference is NE drivers seem to understand that, while out west, many drivers seem to have never seen snow until they get to the mountains AND much more of a nanny state mentality out west.

Driving in the cold unicorn dust and having to chain up, southern US for you lol. They are the same people who cancel school when a half inch of snow falls.

How much damage do the chains do to the tires? Do the still a set of chains that will go across both tires or do they uses one ch=single chain one for each tire? Thanks for a very good video. (Mississippi)

You’re litterally in my town... #frisco. And why they do chain law over Vail and Loveland but not through the tunnel is CDOT doesn’t have enough trucks to plow the pass as often as they do from Copper, thru 10 mile canyon, thru Frisco and Silverthorne and up to the tunnel. Then on top you have 91 to Leadville, then 9 to Breck and down to South Park and 285 to Morrison.

How nice that oncoming cars give distance between them.
