Driving a semi-truck in Wyoming when it's windy is not easy. Right now the winds are 65 miles an hour and my trailer is shaking because it's empty. But I've been shutdown many hours ago. I once saw four trailers on either side of the road had turned over. Some people think they got the power just to push through the mighty Winds of God.... obviously not! For people who drive cars really close to us ✋... ...being stupid and give us some space because if you want to be crushed that's what's going to happen when the wind blows the semi to the side. Stay in your lane and please keep your distance and don't run up on the semi trucks with your car!
@terrynicolai4484

I would be on the left lane. The crown of the road is to your advantage when you are on the upwind side. Was in similar conditions years ago. I passed 7 trucks on their side. All of them were downwind of the center line when they went over. I wish i would have done the smart thing and parked it 2chours prior.

Worst stretch of road in the USA is I-80 from Laramie to Rawlins, a place called Elk Mountain. I have driven truck across this stretch for twenty years. On one night in 2011, in a very cold December weather event (temp minus 35), I saw 19 semi's blown over in a two mile stretch right near Arlington. The winds were gusting to near 80 mph. What made the roads so dangerous was the six inch thick black ice that had built up over a two week period of 80-100 mph winds. This is very common on this stretch. I was nice enough to pick up one of the drivers of a Peterbuilt who had slid down a 60 foot hill. I figured the guy would probably freeze to death before roadside came and got him. He sat in my truck for a couple of hours. He was from Michigan. He said he'd never seen black ice like that, nor winds as strong. Wyoming routinely has winds like this, all winter long. In fact, the Wall Street Journal wrote an article in the 1990's calling Arlington, Wyoming the windiest town in America. I believe it. Over the years I have seen literally thousands of semi's blown over in this area. State police say that an average of 200 semi's are blown over every year between Laramie and Rawlins on I80. Any Veteran truck driver has at least one story to tell of this stretch of interstate.

I-80 in those pats of Wyoming the weather can be very unforgiving during the winter. Winds can reach great enough speeds to knock over a lightly loaded tractor trailer. The wise trucker should always check with the National Weather Service to see if a High Wind Warning was been posted for the area. If a High Wind Warning as been posted, don't drive in a lightly loaded truck. Even under Wind Advisory conditions, driving a tractor trailer can be hazardous. In my area, there is the Tappan Zee Bridge (now Mario M. Cuomo Bridge). Even when a Wind Advisory has been posted for our area, wind speeds can still reach 60 M.P.H. sometimes on the Tappan Zee Bridge. A word to the wise, be careful when driving a tractor trailer under any conditions. If it is too windy, stay off the road.

oh! my 1st debate on a comment thread! yes I know what happens to the turbines on a high wind day (they turn faster) so more energy! though on extreme windy days they stop turning for safety reasons. WY is around 401 mls wide (counting only Interstate 80) which is the main artery of transportation of goods & the one only 1 I'm suggesting not every single highway/road or town the way U R thinking, as for road damage every road needs maintenance so heated roads R no exemption so carefull planing must be executed to cover the expenses of future maintenance. This project can be done but only if the funds are not diverted into other government departments. Last years winter was brutal! walmart's across the country and other stores were short on basic goods thanks to multiple closures on I-80 in Wyoming how do I know that? because I experience it myself transporting those goods on my truck! so I know what I'm saying dude! quit bringing your venomous political bias on this place dude! there's another channel for that! If you want to look at it on an economical stand point consider this: With heated roads the freeway will rarely be closed on winter and no salt chemicals nor sand will need 2b purchased 2b spread on the road thus the road will last longer, no major winter accidents will happen because of slick roads though human stupidity can never be cured so that must B considered on the equation, with WY traffic always open the economy will run at full capacity not in intervals, projects will be completed as scheduled because materials arrived on time, because allot of turbines will be installed to provide enough energy for the road 2b heated there will be plenty of surplus energy after winter so that will be extra $ for WY to keep its roads in perfect shape, yes I know blades erode and turbines need maintenance too so that's why the revenue $ will solely be used to maintain the equipment and the roads, like I said it can B done though not on a negative mind like yours who will look for any minuscule excuse to dismiss it.

I live in Utah so every time I go 2 the East I have to pass through Wyoming there's no other way. On winter I always have to consider the bloody weather of WY to start rolling East. I have turned down several loads that paid good $ because I-80 was closed due to frozen roads, on top of that brockers know that when I-80 is closed on WY they can lower the prices on loads going down South because everyone is trying to go that way just try a load going to CA on winter and you'll see what I'm talking about, I'm pretty sure you have experienced it yourself. WY is broke since the major pileup on I-80 several years ago, thanks to the lawsuits WY lost all of its budget so now all they can do is helplessly close the freeway every time a strong storm passes by, like I said wind turbines would have solved that problem years back, ok I know they R high maintenance but like I said careful planning would solve that problem but the revenue cannot be diverted onto other projects, they could also invest on gas turbines if they are cheaper and more reliable like you said, but the point is someone has to do it! someone needs to have the backbone to place the petition on Congress and make sure goes foward, some one intelligent enough to make it work, some one like... Laramie to Rawlins is absolutely the worse I'd ever encountered. Cajon pass in California was pretty bad also, but not like Elk Mtn. westward. I don't ever recall weather as bad as recently when I was driving for Marten. Better you than me out there drivers. ADIOS AMIGOS!

It has to be a little scary to drive and only be able to see about 100 feet ahead of you.

come to the plains of Northern India during peak winters(early January). The whole region is totally clogged with heavy fog, and the morning time visibility(till around 9 AM) falls down to less than 5 metres!

They have radios. They were told to get on the left side because of the fallen trailer. After they passed the wreck they got back on the right side.

Also, the banking of the road helps cut into the wind and gives a lower chance of rolling over but in those winds it most likely wouldn't help.

Guess it's better to be a flat bedder. I have never seen a flatbed flip, not saying that they haven't, but I haven't seen one.

Instead, flatbedders run the risk of having the cargo fly into the back of the cab and crush the driver if the truck stops suddenly.
