I’m an audiophile, but streaming to the airport express sounds good to me from my iPad or iPhone and the fact it supports AirPlay 2 is a win win for me. I think just one more HomePod mini in my apartment and I’m covered- just ask Siri to play music from anywhere in the apartment, tell it where to play to, and adjust it all on the fly from the airplay menu on any iOS device. Alexa certainly can’t do that- take that Amazon!!

@@shakti.rathore sure, I’ve made another video covering this topic so please check out my channel to see! In short, the commands can be sort of specific at first- for example, “Hey Siri, play music on Yamaha Speakers” will play music on just the Yamaha Speakers. Until you specific a different speaker option, any further commands to that HomePod will play from the Yamaha Speakers. If you specify, “Hey Siri, play music everywhere”, the HomePod will play music on all of your Apple Home speaker devices. If you ask it another music command past that, it will keep playing “everywhere” until you specify a different speaker or group. It’s pretty sweet!

If you connect each one up with an airport express you can play music right through the house. Great for a party where you can have music in the kitchen dining room and lounge. The 3.5 minijack analogue output is also a digital output if you use a mini Toslink cable. You can select individual rooms or several rooms at the same time for that multiroom music experience. Glad to hear you’ve gotten some good use out of them! I’m not sure that it’s a particularly new thing in 2022, but since the 2018 update I’ve seen more and more people using the AirPort Express for this purpose, for sure. What’s more interesting is that Apple still hasn’t given us a modern option: the only reason this workaround is necessary today is essentially because the HomePod mini doesn’t come with a headphone jack 🥲
@classicaloracle

Yep, I still use 2 of these. It's almost criminal that Apple didn't update this - they are so useful. The quality of the internal DAC is still excellent relative to modern devices (see Ken Rockwell review) and if set up correctly they are rock solid. Thanks for your video - it really needs more people to ask Apple to do this again. All we have from them is the HomePod Mini and the Airport Express will link to far bigger and better speakers. If some think that $38 or even $100 is too much it's worth bearing in mind that the best device out there (Bluesound Node) is $500.

I just noticed that if you first try to set it up wirelessly, you can’t do it in the airport utility app, but it shows a setup prompt in the WiFi settings of your iPad. HOWEVER, the setup in the WiFi settings of the iPad doesn’t have an option to just "join a network" which is what we want. So I recommend to connect the airport to your router via Ethernet cable (like in the video) and then it should show up in the airport utility app and then you can select "join existing network " and set it up to only be an AirPlay adapter.

I suggest, if possible, to use a LAN cable from your router to bring WAN and LAN to the AirPort Express. Using the mesh functions will slow down the wifi of your router. You better use the AE as a dedicated Wifi access point for Guests Wifi, and use the USB port connected to your printer 🖨 even if it has wifi connected to your private wifi, I explain: Your guests arrive, they connect to the segregated guest wifi of the AE ( you private network is not compromised, no private wifi password sharing) as a bonus they too have access to AirPlay and can instantly play music wirelessly from the guest wifi, and if need to print a photo or document, they can use AE’s AirPrint to do so via the USB cable connected to the printer 🖨 ( again no private wifi security breach ) The AirPrint bonus works easily with computers. With smartphones or tablets, results may vary, sometimes needing a printer manufacturer dedicated app like HP smart, etc… Best option if you have an AirPrint embedded printer with both wifi and Ethernet you can use both connections, wifi for guest prints and Ethernet for private network prints, or vice-versa. Last point, the AE‘s USB embedded AirPrint server is accessible both by the private network and the guest network, in case of an old USB only printer, it will be accessible to all while keeping networks segregated. If Ethernet cables are an issue, powerline network adapters can do the job cleanly, transporting data thru power outlets (must be directly connected to wall socket) Sorry for the long comment 🙏🏼😉
@NareKICK

Hey, I’m having the exact issue you mention that once I use airplay over the network, it immediately reduces my wifi bandwidth. Are you suggesting then, to create a separate guest network using the AE? Are there any security vulnerabilities with such an old router?
@johnmanderson2060
Жыл бұрын
@@NareKICK Not really, just make sure to have the latest firmware update done on the AE using the Apple airport managing app ( Mac OS or iOS or iPadOS ) use the WPA2 AES protocol ( not tkip! ) then generate a long random very complex wifi password. To ease the guest wifi network access, you can generate a QRcode with an iPhone shortcut script that you can easily found via Google. When your guests wish to connect, they just need to scan the QRcode you have printed or as an image on your phone. If the guest is in you contact list, you can share the password automatically via the prompt you will get asking for the wifi password when they try to connect. This function requires airdrop activated and/or Bluetooth shared connection ON, i don’t remember exactly, sorry it is late here, if you Google it you will find it. Best regards

I'm surprised that nobody in the comments mentioned the DIYs to add airplay like a raspberry pi. I know they are very expensive at the moment but if you already have one or just buy something similar, it's very easy to just flash an SD card with a special OS that can add Bluetooth, airplay and even Spotify Connect (only works with a Spotify premium account unfortunately), DLNA or all protocol you want, and some OSs have also multiroom options. Furthermore you can easily add a DAC directly to the raspberry pi as you have some that just plugs into the pins (it's called a "hat"). However your solution is cheaper but I thought it's good to mention it if people want to do the same as you and can't put their hands on an old apple router 😉

You’ve made an useful suggestion for re-use of these AirPod devices. There’s one aspect I don’t understand, which is the headphone jack cabling to the amplifier inputs. Most older amps expect RAC jacks or bare wire connections, but differ in the sensitivity to allow various devices to connect. How does one connect the AirPod and to which amp input?
@dylanmacintosh
2 жыл бұрын
Sure, the AirPort Express A1392 has its own built-in DAC (digital audio converter), so it can output an analog audio source via its headphone jack. All you need is a headphone cable that has RCA red and white plugs on the other end. You can find this cable on Amazon for pretty cheap and I have included a link in the description to one that I’ve used. Then you can simply plug the red and white plugs into the RCA inputs on the receiver. As far as the sensitivity of the signal, I’m not sure how you mean- once the signal has been converted to analog, it’s ready to go. Thankfully, most of the work is done automatically and there’s not much to worry about- it’s simpler than you think 👍

@@dylanmacintosh I think they are remembering the "phono" input on some amps. There are even a couple current ones that still have it, but the important point is that it is designed to expect way lower volume levels since the "phonograph" (record player) connected to it was normally un-amplified and feeding the signal directly from the needle. An MP3 player connected to a phono input might blow it. The answer to their question is probably "you connect the Airport Express to any non-phono input"
@dylanmacintosh
2 жыл бұрын
@@JB-fh1bb Ahh I see what you mean! I seem to remember having the opposite problem where if you plug a phono source into a line level input it will have little to no volume, but I hadn’t considered the opposite problem of too much signal to the phono input- so yes, I’d connect the AE to a line level input on your receiver. There is usually more line level inputs that are arbitrarily named (CD, Tape, Aux), and just the one Phono. So any one the line levels like CD, Tape or Aux will be fair game. Hope this clarifies things!

It is a cheap and easy fix, but I still prefer to use a RaspberryPi for this. Of course for best audio quality, you need an external DAC for that, but it is not necessary. The main pro's of using a RaspberryPi is that the latest version is rather fast and has a lot of headroom for it to run other services like a PiHole, VPN or a print/scan server. It can also be useful for home automation tasks and it does not consume a lot of power.

I completely agree! I have an RPi kicking around here somewhere, I might just have to set it up for this and give it a try! If you have the know how, there are so many more great ways to get wireless audio of even higher quality without resorting to an AirPort Express- at the end of the day it’s great to have options!

@dylanmacintosh
2 жыл бұрын
Sure! Firstly, it’s an Apple specific protocol that “combines Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connections” so to speak, so if you don’t have any Apple devices it’s meaningless. Secondly, if you have Apple devices, AirPlay 2 provides such conveniences as multi-room synchronized audio, the ability to adjust volumes across multiple receivers, and certain “ecosystem” perks, like the AirPlay quick menu, or setting a HomePod stereo pair as the default audio output of your Apple TV just to name a couple. But again these features are very much Apple-entrenched, so if all you need is Bluetooth there is no need to dive into the AirPlay waters. I hope this helps and please let me know if you have any other questions!

@@dylanmacintosh Forgive me if this is way off-base, or just sheer incorrect, but, in my experience, a Bluetooth-enabled source device can only play to one (1) Bluetooth-capable receiver / target speaker at one time, whereas my home setup allows me to connect to multiple AirPlay speaker sets at one time.

It’s cheap and easy and it’s also sht. Airplay 2 is too much for the processor on the Express. I bought 3 of them and there are all sorts of annoying issues: - >3s (sometimes even >10) Delay between choosing it and getting audio out - It might not connect at all at first and might need to switch back and forth between the device and the speaker before it starts working - Multi-room output multiplies the chance of problems. Choosing both might mean deselecting and reselecting multiple times. As well, I’ve had multiple cases where one gets out of sync and I need to stop the music/video entirely Note: this is with the express hardwired via ethernet and plugged in to an upgraded optical DAC. As an Apple household: when it works it sounds awesome and that’s thankfully my main concern, but there’s a price to pay for sure.

Back in the day when the first express and subsequently second express came out. Apple made them with the 3.5mm optical/analog jack for the very reason we’re using them now but back then you were able to stream audio from ur iTunes app on ur pc/mac to ur hifi setup. That way you didn’t need to run a long cable to your hifi to listen to ur iTunes music. It was pretty forward thinking. Too bad they got out of the router game. Only downside to using the express for airplay 2 is that the audio isn’t synchronized if you’re using other AirPlay 2 devices like Apple TV’s or the HomePod…

@@dylanmacintosh What I meant about the music not being synchronized is that if you have something playing on the A1392 and then you have something on a different device like an Apple TV and then another thing on HomePod, the music won't be in sync. Sometimes the A1392 will have a 1 second delay in the song resulting in an echo like effect if you're walking from room to room. It's not as big a deal if you happen to have a unit out in the backyard and one inside. I suspect this is more of an issue with the AirPlay 2 protocol vs the devices. I've played songs through multiple Apple TVs with them not being in sync as well. I think though, if you're using purely A1392s as your AirPlay 2 devices, shouldn't be much a problem. I haven't tested this theory out yet because I only have two of them. I would have liked it if I could use my 3 AppleTVs and my airplay2 enabled receiver to do whole home audio though.

Ah I see, I’ll have to do some further testing to see if I can replicate what you’re seeing/hearing. My first question for your setup is are you AirPlaying to these devices from your iPhone or other device like an iPad? Or are you streaming the music through HomeKit? The difference being when you open the AirPlay quick menu on your phone and select “Control Other Devices” it will show iPhone -> to your other AirPlay 2 devices if it’s actually AirPlaying from your iPhone.

Thank you and great question! The main advantage is that you can continue using your existing receiver, whether it be vintage or modern, your favorite or just whatever you have- with the side advantage of it being an inexpensive add-on, typically less than $50 US but depends on what’s available in your area or eBay shipping. Other AirPlay devices might cost $100 in the case of the Belkin Soundform Connect, or much more in the case of the Sonos Port at ~$450 US. However if you are in the market for a HIFI receiver that supports AirPlay 2, absolutely go for it, there are several on the market that seem very nice 👌 In regards to a Bluetooth receiver vs AirPlay, AirPlay simply provides more convenience to Apple users than a regular Bluetooth connection. You can even get fancy with it and setup multi-room audio if you have multiple AirPlay 2 enabled receivers. You can also control them via Siri if you add those receivers into your Apple Home app. But if Bluetooth is all you need, there are plenty of cheap adapters out there that can do the job for even less $$ and greater simplicity than what’s shown here, without the need for a high end HIFI Bluetooth receiver. At the end of the day, it’s a great thing that we have so many options at so many different price brackets!

isn't using a bluetooth audio receiver adapter to turn speakers into bluetooth speakers a much cheaper way to get the same functionality? or are there any added benefits with the AirPort Extreme ?
@dylanmacintosh
2 жыл бұрын
Sure, if all you need is Bluetooth you can use almost any adapter. However this video is about AirPlay 2, which contains the added benefits of multi-room audio as well as integrated Apple device controls. If you don’t have Apple devices there is no need to go this route. If you have Android devices I would suggest Amazon’s Alexa Echo Dot, or Goolge’s Home mini as these already have audio jacks on the back and will allow for voice control directly while their output is connected to an external speaker. Hope this helps!

@@dylanmacintosh ohh yes multi room audio is an added benefit for this. I also have speakers and an echo dot but I just found it way more convenient to use the bluetooth dongle since I can connect my Mac or iPhone from anywhere and it was cheaper than airport express. but multi room setups would greatly benefit from APE also thanks for the quick reply and keep up your good content💪

Hi Dylan, I thought of using the a1392 apple router hooked up to my Marshall woburn bluetooth speaker (via 3.5 headphone jack) since airplay 2 is better sound quality transfer than bluetooth! According to your video this would be just a simple connect - set up & play! Am I right?
@dylanmacintosh
2 жыл бұрын
Sure! Once the AirPort Express A1392 is setup as an AirPlay 2 receiver, it doesn’t matter what the audio out of the unit is plugged into- you can plug it into any speaker and let it rip! Let me know if you have any more questions 😎

Hey Dylan! Great video, thank you very much for sharing it! Is it possible to connect multiple of these together for a multi zone/room audio? Thank you very much in advance.

Yes, that is exactly how I have my flat setup- it’s great! The only trick is you have to add the AirPort Express as a HomeKit device, which I also made a follow up video about here: kzitem.info/news/bejne/0Id_zKWGg5WJm44si=C3N8Zg_kWCebBGwr This reminds me, I should make a follow up video showing my current AirPlay 2 setup. It’s mostly the same, but a new video might just help clear up some questions like this one all at once, so thank you for reminding me- I’ll add it to the list of videos!

1:40 stupid question but when Apple ist 1st party; Belkin is 3rd party what would be 2nd party?
@dylanmacintosh
2 жыл бұрын
There are no stupid questions! Second party would relate to an entity that is partly owned or perhaps contracted by the first party. So in Apple’s case, a second party would be if a company that they partly owned created a product. If we were talking about headphones/speakers and continue using Apple as an example the AirPods would be first party, a second party option could be the Beats line of headphones because Apple owns them, and then third would be anyone else, like Sony or Bose, etc. Hope this helps!

That’s strange, I wonder what could be causing that. The first thing I would check is that all your devices are as updated as they can be, and then make sure your AirPort routers are on static IP addresses. If you have an Apple TV or HomePod, I might recommend adding the AirPort Expresses to HomeKit as described in my video here to see if the Homekit protocol can help handle the AirPlay connection rather than just your phone. Hope this helps! kzitem.info/news/bejne/0Id_zKWGg5WJm44&feature=shares

Added 3 AirPort Express units to music stream to old systems per video. Does not immediately show up as an airplay options vs Apple tv’s on iPhone. Read that if you airplane mode iPhone and then switch back to Wi-Fi that seems to help. Any suggestions? Works good once connected but seems to be a little hit and miss.

Great question! Since making this video I have also added 3 AE’s and every so often they do go offline- to remedy this I simply hard reset whichever AE is having the issue at the moment by unplugging it’s power cable, waiting a minute or two, and plugging it back in. If you happen to be running an Apple Home, I have posted a sequel to this video describing the benefits of adding your AirPort Express devices into your Apple Home app as Speaker devices- thanks for watching!

Apologies, my goal with this video was to specifically highlight the capabilities of the AirPort Express as an AirPlay 2 device, and because there are all kinds of audio setups out there I didn’t want to confuse viewers by focusing too much on the exact cables and connectors that I used, since it’s very subjective to the end user’s equipment. If you have specific questions about your receiver and speaker models, and how they might be able to connect to an AirPort Express I would be happy to assist you! Thanks for watching!

if the hifi amplifer in standby mode, will it be turned on by you airplay something into it?
@dylanmacintosh
2 жыл бұрын
No, the AirPort Express doesn’t support this feature because it’s connecting over just a headphone jack essentially, but Apple TV with CEC does support this feature over HDMI. So for that feature it may be best to go with an Apple TV running “headless” tucked in with the stereo, and hooked up via HDMI to a receiver with CEC functionality. Does that make sense? Please let me know if you have any more questions!

You can use equally cheap ATV instead
@dylanmacintosh
2 жыл бұрын
Yes! This is a great idea that I’ve seen others in the comments have done as well. If anyone lurking the comments is curious, the reason why I prefer the AirPort Express over the AppleTV method is because the AirPort Express was designed to be used “headless” (without the use of a display) while the Apple TV requires you use a display at least to set it up before stashing it away somewhere. Also, the hardware of the AirPort Express was designed to be “always-on” since it was built to be a router, whereas the AppleTV was not- not that it can’t be left on, but it just wasn’t built to be as much as the AE was. And finally, I enjoy that the AE does not come with a remote, as it is just one less thing for me to lose 🤣 For anyone that was curious ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I’m having issues. Just tried this last night. Plugged in aux cable to airport to headphone jack in avr. Airplay is connected but no sound. Should it be a aux to rca cable instead?
@dylanmacintosh
Жыл бұрын
Great question! Usually headphone jacks are audio-out only, unless labeled as aux-in, so connecting one headphone jack to another would typically result in no sound unless otherwise labeled. Without knowing the exact model number of your receiver it’s hard to say exactly, but I think your next question is on the right track- I would normally recommend using a 3.5 mm to RCA cable to connect your AirPort Express audio output to a receiver’s audio input. I hope this helps!

I used it for many years and loved it. But when I switched my router to FRITZ!Box the AE wasn’t able to join the network without crashing it. Any experience with this?
@dylanmacintosh

Great Question, and it depends on how your network is set up. If your AE is connected via Ethernet cable with the option set to “extend a network” this will create a feedback loop that will crash your network. If your AE is wired in make sure it’s set to “create a wireless network” even though it doesn’t sound like the right option. Hope this helps!
