Think about what you said…ROPS. An open tractor does not have FOPS. ROPS protects the operator in a rollover situation. FOPS provides “reasonable protection” from falling objects (but not a tree that big).

I'm sensing that everyone thinks you where on the tractor. You are lucky, but the rops or if it had the the fops they are only rated for a certain weight. It would have still buckled. Anything that is for safety gives faults security why it's man made the biggest fault of all. Just saying.

Good thoughts. Sure glad you're unhurt, and it looks like you were blessed with minimal damage to the tractor. If the branches are important, you could use a push mower or trimmer. I wonder how much damage that tree would have done to the roll bar. Dead trees really are a hazard, including when you're trying to drop them. I've seen 'em splinter and go everywhere, or barber chair and drop straight down from 20 feet.

He knows the GOOD LORD was not ready to take him and has learned his lesson well from now on. Just asking, but would it not have been better to just keep cutting (bucking) that tree from the root end and work your way back to the ROPS? The weight would have been greatly reduced and seems like it would have been easier to handle once you got to the point of taking it off of the tractor. Working around dead trees ALWAYS keeps me on my toes! More than once I have had dead limbs fall out of a dead tree, the first one of which had hit the hood of my tractor, and several near misses. That is just part of the deal when working in the woods, but I try to watch my surroundings, but you don't always see everything.

Agreed. If it had been me in that situation, I'd like to think taking the time to even cut small slices off the butt end after it was "floating", would have continually lightened the "load" resting on the seat, and small pieces would have been easier to get out of the way. Use the machines you have to lighten the pieces instead of trying to lift/throw heavy chunks from awkward positions.

Never remove the rops ! Lucky you wasn't on the tractor at the time. They install them on for a reason. Had a boss who removed his for mowing under trees with a 1025 johndeere. I agree. But the ROPS can cause other issues. I was bush-hogging along a tree-line, and the ROPS caught a low branch, and pushed it forward in front of me. Then it slipped above the ROPS and came flying back at me... A branch stub missed my eye by about a half inch. Again, I agree - never remove the ROPS. Just be mindful of what it can do.

I've seen this a bunch on a property I volunteer at. The Ash trees are dieing off in my area due to the Emerald Ash Borer infestation. They don't seem to slowly drop limbs as they decay like other dead trees. They'll rot at the stump and then the entire tree tips over. Saves the hassle of needing to grind the stump at least.

You say the ash trees are dying in your area because of the emerald ash borer infestation. In my area it's beech trees that are dying because of beech bark disease which is an insect-fungus complex caused by the beech mealybug and a canker fungus. Diseased trees dry out and lose their bark in just three years.

Dead trees are a death trap waiting to spring on someone. My uncle was sawing a big big dead tree of the side of his house and had his son in law pulling at it with a tractor. He jerked the tree when it was ready to go over and limbs the size of small trees fell on him breaking his femur and leaving him unconcious. Also he fell against a farm tractor attachment which punched a hole in his skull. This happened right after my dad arrived to spend his birthday their in the mountains. He heard the saw stop and went to see him and there he was. Dad thought his brother was dead. He started sawing limbs off him and got him free. He found a place level enough for life flight to land and guided them in when they arrived.
