"I almost let go...
I felt like I just couldn't take life anymore.
My problems had me bound...
Depression weighed me down.
But God held me close,
So I wouldn't let go.
God's mercy kept me,
So I wouldn't let go.”
There’s an important story surrounding this video. An incredible musician I looked up to by the name of Rodney Allen reached out and asked me if I would be willing to do a video for special music at his church. And I was shook! Anyone that knew Rodney is familiar with him ripping up the keyboard/piano. He had genius placement and reharms, but also knew the importance of staying in the pocket. He was elite. This video, to me now, has a whole new meaning...
Shortly after he reached out, he sent me a message telling me "I want to bless you bro, & I believe in you and your gift and talents. God will open doors for you." That warmed my heart so much, because while we weren’t super close, I don’t think he knew that he was the first pianist I heard at my university, or how much I looked up to and respected him as a musician. A few days later after our conversation, he unfortunately passed away.
Rodney’s death is a horrible blow, but I hope the grieving hearts of all that knew him can find some solace in the fact that God’s mercy and grace has kept us, and will continue to keep us through our grief. So while we’re hurt, we won’t let go! We won’t let go because one day we’re going to see Rodney again!
I’m dedicating this piece to him. RIP to the Doc, Rodney Allen!
