I loved the Walnut chair. The contrasting grain accentuated those unique outer lines bringing the design up another level. It made me wonder what it would be like in contrasting woods against the skirting. SO Zen.

25:14 I made a similar mistake on a project and fixed it the same way. However, I did it in reverse order. I scanned a piece of scrap that had a knot, traced the outline on-machine then routed out an inlay. Then increased the offset (to account for the bit) and routed out the exact shape on the project piece. It fit perfectly and you'd never know it wasn't a natural knot

Great video, not seen yours before but will check out your other ones. A world away from my very much diy approach, but your skill is inspiring. On the chair width question, and related questions around ergonomics, have you read Chris Schwartz's The Stick Chair? It has a wealth of practical information on exactly these sort of questions, drawing on historical record and Chris's own experience as a maker. I believe the PDF is available on his site free, though the book is well worth the price.

Great video and really enjoyed the process. Couple of thoughts. You mentioned about making the chair (and hence the seat) only 17 inches wide. Did you stick with that? I think that may be a little narrow for the average behind. You probably won’t be doing much shaping by hand if you’re using the cnc to do most of the shaping (which is sweet), but instead of the cutting disks, would a heavy cut with a spokeshave or even slightly curved drawknife/scorp be just as quick with less dust? I’m just a KZitem commenter, so my opinion isn’t worth a whole lot. I really do like the chair and build, and as some others mentioned would definitely be interested in potential files for the cnc. I’m also interested in some more details on how you cut the crest rail on the cnc (because I don’t have a large enough bandsaw rough out the shape)
@CoffeyCustomBuilds
3 ай бұрын
Yeah they might be too narrow. Going to get them out to more people to test. A spoke shave was used for cleanup but I'd probably buy a draw shave or an inshave. I'm thinking of doing another video just showing the machining process.

Nice work! Just a thought but if you used loose tennon on the stretcher, put it tight on the leg and loose on the stretcher, but did a through mortise on the leg and used a walnut domino then the joinery would match the rest while achieving the same result? Just a thought as design is always personal. Great work.
@CoffeyCustomBuilds

That would definitely be an option! I think anymore through tenons and it would be distracting though. Just my opinion.

Per usual, the finished product is absurdly rad and I learned quite a bit. But here’s the real question: in a world where a Pantorouter and a Domino cost the same amount, should an aspiring pro-sumer furniture-making hobbyist buy the former or the latter?

@@CoffeyCustomBuilds I’ve done a smattering of tables and other pieces over the last couple years, but I feel like chairs/desks are the next step. I love both MCM and Craftsman, but I’m also not planning on woodworking becoming my full-time job. The dream is to have a shop where I can build my (patient) wife and loved ones whatever they want whenever it comes up.

You talked about CAD being helpful for furniture design, but then went through design iterations that could've easily been visualized with CAD (i.e. the chair back angle). Why go through physical implementation for this feature?
@CoffeyCustomBuilds
3 ай бұрын
Like I said in the video, things in CAD just don't look the same in reality. For me, I need to see the piece in person to make my final design decisions. Also, not everyone is used to or has access to cad.

I am going to disagree with the others, the design while not offensive is pretty basic, and has been done similarly many times before, I am not a fan of through joinery, never have been but even worse is that you left the ends round and didn't take the time to square them off.

@@CoffeyCustomBuilds it's so amusing when you give an honest critique to someone that makes you tube videos and think they are actually good at woodworking how offended they get, you're not the first. You have no idea of what my work is, and the fact that I learned under some of the masters of the 20th century, But you already know you won't like it. That's something to aspire to for sure, keep up the great attitude it will get you far I am sure.
