You explained the issue very well, I like your perspective and how you brought up not just colorism but featurism/texturism/etc. Ultimately, I think pretty privilege is a subcategory of White Supremacy, and an umbrella term for all the "isms" that people use to uphold White Supremacy. While I knew the often racist origins of pretty privilege, I never stopped to consider whether it is even "real" or not. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and giving me something to consider!

Pretty girl privilege is popular girl privilege. For some reason people think all pretty girls are popular. But they're not. It's a weird idea people have going on there. I agree. You could be one of the top pretty girls but if the other pretty girl is much more expressive, kind and interesting, she’ll definitely attract more people. It seems like most people find me attractive but I’ve never been popular. Especially as a teen where I was often quiet and shy. The quiet and shy girls kinda get lost in the background. Or if you seem kinda odd or boring, you’ll get lost in the background too. I know girls that are pretty but don’t attract a lot of friends or lovers.

I've realized that being pretty is subjective. You grew up with vain family member especially since one of them is in the fashion industry, so I knew about pretty privilege by age 8. I think I'm pretty, but their are plenty that beg to differ, but on the flip I've had free stuff, meals paid for. Especially when I was younger and a little thinner. Now I'm still pretty in the face, but overweight, so the perks aren't really there because to others I'm not as pretty.

I think you are so spot on when you said the basis of pretty privilege is based in anti-blackness. Never heard it articulated this way, but that is it right there in a nutshell. ✅✅✔✔ It carries the underlying idea that black cannot or is usually not beautiful. Also the idea that if blackness includes looser textured hair, smaller facial features, certain body types; then and only then, can it be accepted into the pretty classification.

If you don’t have “pretty privilege” meaning you don’t get benefits and exceptions due to your looks it may be that you are not “pretty” to those in your society that are able to give you access to advantages, this does not mean you are “ugly” you just aren’t considered “pretty” to others. I was born with light skin, even lighter than Will Smith's. Growing up, I faced significant challenges within the Black community, enduring harsh looks and negative comments. As a child, I struggled to comprehend the reasons behind this treatment, but as I grew older, I came to understand the pervasive concept of colorism. Another profound challenge I faced centered around my physical features. While I had light skin and moderately full lips, which would be considered typical for a Black individual, my nose was noticeably broader than the norm - think Don Cheedle. This incongruity became a source of ridicule, and I found it frustrating that people often made assumptions based on my appearance. They would question how a light-skinned person like me could possess such a wide nose. Interestingly, no one seemed to recognize my Nigerian heritage; instead, they frequently assumed I was of Caribbean descent, expressing disbelief when I told them I hailed from Africa. This was both puzzling and insulting. Curiously, when someone with darker skin exhibited a wide nose, it typically went unnoticed or unremarked upon. However, being light-skinned seemed to invite more scrutiny and assumptions about my nose's size. At times, I yearned to have darker skin just to avoid this particular brand of scrutiny. While there were undoubtedly benefits to being light-skinned, the accompanying hate and incessant commentary on my nose's size weighed heavily on me. Life as a light-skinned individual isn't as glamorous as some might imagine, particularly considering the considerable disdain I encountered within the Black community. People seemed to relish exposing my insecurities, further exacerbating the divide between light and dark-skinned individuals. To address this issue, I made a life-altering decision six months prior to the pandemic: I opted for a nose job in Turkey to refine my nose's appearance. The outcome was undeniably a more aesthetically pleasing nose, albeit one that appeared decidedly Caucasian. Due to my light skin, people began assuming I was of mixed race, and they were often taken aback by my perceived beauty, perpetuating the stereotype that mixed-race individuals, especially those of Black and white heritage, are considered more attractive. The irony is that my nose's improved appearance was solely due to surgical enhancement, yet the credit often shifted to my assumed mixed heritage, which I found deeply frustrating. The nose job changed the way my faced looked because it made me look European with dark skinned and boy do people love telling me that fact. This transformation in my appearance ushered in a new set of challenges. First people tell me that I look like a model (I was cute before but nowhere near the level people talk about), everyone teenage girls, women, teenage boys tell me that I look incredible and they are very vocal about it, I can't even go to a crowded place without people commenting on how good I looked, even caught girls and men secretly recording me. The flip side is Dark-skinned Black men, oblivious to my nose job, accused me of thinking I was superior to them and sought out flaws to insult me with. Some even labeled me as a Caucasian with dark skin. On the flip side, I encountered backlash from white people who assumed I was mixed race, and don't get me started when they are with their partners, and some may have harbored prejudices against mixed-race individuals or resented my perceived heritage, despite my not being mixed. My experiences extended to receiving negative reactions from Black women, as well as older white and black women, who met me with disapproving stares and unfriendly behavior. The core point I want to emphasize is that I pursued this nose job due to societal pressures stemming from my light skin. Had I been dark-skinned, the inclination to make this change might never have arisen. Being light-skinned presents its unique challenges, particularly when you deviate from certain Euro-centric beauty standards, such as possessing wide features.
@BCentricTV

Thank you for sharing your story! In regards to pretty privilege, featurism plays a significant role and not all light-skinned people will experience the same level of privilege just as not all dark-skinned people will face the same level of scrutiny for their complexion. DS people without a doubt are teased and ridiculed for their features. My nose was one thing specifically I was teased about as a child and was compared to a bulldog. Wide and full features are not innate to only DSB people. I do understand where you are coming from because unfortunately there are ignorant people out there that think something is wrong when a LSB person doesn't fit the racially ambiguous look many are obsessed with. I'm sorry you felt pressure to change who you are, but I hope you are happy with the change. Thanks again for sharing 💜

What people term "pretty privilege " is really "sexy privilege ". Sexy and pretty/ handsome are not synonymous. "Sexy" means you intice people's sexual desires. Hair, makeup, clothes and even speech can make someone sexy. Characteristics of sexy can also be a fad. Two examples are women's butt size and mens body size. (Now it is popular to view "dad bods" as sexy). "Pretty" is more about facial bone structure. Pretty is unchanging regardless of weight, hairdo, clothes, skin color, etc. Then you have attractive and you also have cute. But overall, the point I'm making is that "pretty privilege " is really "sexy privilege ".

Just because you don't have the highest pretty privelege doesn't mean you have no pretty privelege. You definitely have some. Quick assessment: You have very clear even toned skin. Larger clear eyes. Large eyes are attractive in women. Google it. Although your nose is wider than the Eurocentric model, it still is more sharp and not more round. Your hair 4c but it is longer. Long hair is part of pretty standard. Yours is a medium brown skin that appears light enough to see your redish undertones not dark skin as in Whoopi for example. So ok, compared to someone who looks like say Leslie Jones you'd definitely have more pretty privelege than her even if less than Beyonce. This isn't fair or right but it's the society.

Pretty Privilege is real even for a Black woman. You're no Iman or Naomi Campbell. They're dark skin but they do benefit from Pretty Privilege.

Off rip @0:30 if you have to question if pretty privilege is a real thing. Then no baby, you do not have pretty privilege for sure. No shade Just shouldn’t be a question.

If you’re pretty you’re pretty, if you’re not you’re not. It has nothing to do with racism or fricking ‘white supremacy’ wth 😭😭😭 pretty privilege does exist but it has nothing to do with phobias or ‘isms’. What makes someone aesthetically appealing is down to the proportions and structures of your face for example a narrow nose with a narrow face shape in proportion to the width of your eyes and so on, at the end of the day it’s just a matter of either you have it or you don’t, but I think it’s a victim mentality to blame everything on ‘racism’ and ‘brain washing’ imo

I think it matters on where u are living too, cuz certain features are considered pretty by a place can be considered ugly/average by other. For example if u are living in Asia then fair skin is the standard here but same fair skin won't be the standard in the West. Maybe she's living in a place where Eurocentric features are more desired than Afrocentric.

@@BCentricTV I am so happy you talked about featurism and texturism. Your the first to come out with this video. Everybody is slow to realize that it is not only colorism, there are other details that gives you pretty privilege. I am a light skin black women but Im actually masculinized while my co worker who is part Indian and black is treated with more respect. I have wide features and 4c hair. While she has loose and silky curls, slimmer nose.

Exactly…Dsbw are always bringing up the “isms” if they don’t measure up. I see dsbw with full features and 4c hair get pretty privilege all the time, because they’re actually pretty. This victim narcissist view needs to stop. Just try to level up as best as you can, and find other ways to make yourself more attractive

I totally agree I’m tired of people always saying European features.. not all white ppl have small noses a lot get nose jobs. It’s about having a harmonious face
