I'm 20 and I have no idea what my sexuality is. I keep telling myself I don't need a label and sexuality is fluid, but the thing is, I WANT a label. I feel like I don't truly know myself and my desires. It's becoming a real problem for me. I've had sex with guys and I can't even pinpoint whether I like it or not. I've made out with girls and I have no idea if I liked that. Am I straight? Gay? Bisexual? Asexual? Who knows... not me, that's for sure.

sexual and romantic orientations are a very, very broad subject. biromantic heterosexual, i'd say, but you don't have to label. you don't have to do anything until you feel comfortable and you've accepted whatever you are. with all these labels, you can't really say you're one specific thing. good luck to you, Emma. it's good to know that it's alright to not know what the hell's happening. don't stress yourself too much over it. it'll come to you when it decides to.

The split attraction model is good for ace people but usually it just causes confusion. It kinda assumes that "bisexual" is inherently sexual when that's never really been the definition. And most bisexual people say they experience attraction differently with different genders so it doesn't automatically mean "biromantic heterosexual".
@cottage-core_
8 жыл бұрын
Also though she doesn't really talk about having to have emotional connections with people prior a relationship, I'd also just like to throw in demiromantic and/or demisexual. Just maybe as something to mull over, though I agree that what she's describing does sound like biromantic and heterosexual. Just throwing that in there. Though of course people can identify any way they wish, and labels aren't necessary or something you need to conform to. Sometimes they're nice though, they help you see that you aren't alone.

The way I see it you don't need to define your interests to anyone. If you find a definition that represents you it's an awesome way to find a community of people who think similarly that you can share experiences with, that's awesome, but you don't owe anybody a reason for the way that you approach relationships. Whatever comes around next I hope that you're happy, healthy and loved. Thanks for sharing your story, I think it's just as important as any story where somebody's figured it out.

Once I accepted that, I noticed that I will look at girls and think some of them are cute and such. I am asexual though, so I'm not sexually attracted to anyone. But I am romantically attracted to both guys and girls. :) To me, it sounds like you are heterosexual but biromantic, if you want a label to kind of make you make sense of what is going on with yourself. :)

meowmeowserz It's difficult when you're young to figure everything out. Being asexual, I think sex is gross but at 13 theres the possibility that it's just because you haven't gone completely through puberty yet. Asexuality is something to keep in mind though if it's still something going on when you're older. You may be panromantic though, pansexual or panromantic is being interested regardless of sex and/or gender, including non-binary identities :)

It's means so much to me hearing this and realising that there is someone who understands what I feel and knows what I'm going through. I tell people I'm bisexual or pan sexual just because it's easier to explain than saying "well I like guys and I probably want to settle down with a guy eventually but I also really like girls it's just that I don't like the idea of having sex with girls because I'd find it weird but not with guys that seems fine". However I kept thinking I'm just confused and I'll figure out my proper sexuality and be able to label it soon but now im not so sure I need to label it. Okay so 1thanks Emma for make this video! I relate to everything you've said in this video. Like I literally have described it the exact same way and just, ugh it just feels so good to have someone that I look up to also feeling the same way I'm feeling. Anyway I do think that if you wanted a label (that sounds so shitty) that biromantic would work because I have felt the same exact feelings as you and I identify as biromantic. I've had a girlfriend and I really liked her. Whenever we would hold hands or hang out I would get that bubbly feeling in my chest and it was super nice. I also felt that protectiveness because this guy we both know, who's a freaking dick btw, was flirting with her and I was like lol please screw off thanks. But yeah never feel the need to put yourself in a box but if you wanted a box, you know for convenience, I think biromantic describes you pretty accurately. Supergen31 Awesomeface i know that, but if you so desperately need a laben, pick something that makes sense. Seriously what you’re describing is plain and simple bisexuality - attraction to both sexes (it doesn‘t matter what KIND of attraction, for most people they’re all linked. Your labels are contracting and worst of all: it opens the door to even more homophobia i.e shit like homosexual heterotomantic and such, don’t give people an opening to deny their sexuality. Micro labeling is bullshit, pick a label if you need to but there’s no need to invent new labels.
@georgeharrisonfricklas7927
6 жыл бұрын
yeah but homosexual heteroromantic makes no damn sense that means that you love the opposite sex but you wanna fuck the same sex???? like idk. I've had crushes on girls before, but I've never wanted to have a sexual relationship with them. it's strange, but I find that it makes sense. When i introduce myself at a party, and someone asks my orientation, i say i'm straight. why? because i'm heterosexual. if i'm at a party, or in public, people aren't looking to fall in love with me or have an asexual relationship. So, I say i'm straight. But if I want an honest to god true label of how i feel, Biromantic heterosexual is there. Not everyone wants to hear that mouthful, so, i say i'm straight. Happy?

+GAMINGwith JOHAN nah, it's a myth that women's sexuality is more "flexible" compared to men's. it's pretty much the same. it's just guys talk less about it and dont even admit it to themselves cos its more frowned upon to see two guys doing stuff than it is two girls. bc women are sexualized and (most straight) men like seeing two women together, whther men are supposed to be "manly" so even being affectionate with a a guy friend or even family member could be considered you know, not macho, so yeah. some guys even tend to get violent when like a gay guy flirts with them or even if a guy friend tries to hug them (ive personally seen this happen a lot of times) and more often than noy it's gay/bi guys who react the strongest.
@PrometheusXV
8 жыл бұрын
Nope, studies were done, they showed that a large portion (meaning almost all, not sure on the actual number), of women tested showed at least somewhat of an attraction towards women, even when identifying as straight, where as when men were tested, almost none of them were attracted to men even slightly, unless they explicitly identified as gay. The way this was observed was through the many ways the body reacts to seeing someone you view as attractive. In my experiences, most guys I know, who are very honest people, find the female body to be very attractive, but absolutely nothing about guys to be. I've had many straight-forward, honest conversations with my guy-friends, and we always agreed that being attracted to guys was pretty out of the park for us. I'm not sure how to put it, but I guess to explain it would be like, if you're a guy, women have amazing bodies, they've got curves, and smooth skin, and just all sorts of things along those lines, then guys just have, I don't know, muscles, hair literally everywhere, really horrible b/o, a dick? Not really that attractive to me, or most people I know. Of all of my friends, I've known many girls who identified as bisexual, one guy who identified as bisexual (but clarified that he wasn't really that interested in guys sexually), and one guy who identified as bi-curious, but then ended up saying he just liked muscular guys to look at, and nothing more.

I know that there are people who genuinely romantically like girls and don't want to have sex with girls. This could be Emma, maybe not. It's not my place to say. But also I feel like wlw having sex is always shamed or seen as pornographic. Lots of lesbians struggle with seeing themselves as sexual beings. To anyone out there feeling this way, that could be a possibility. Being a girl who wants to have sex with other girls isn't wrong.

for the first part, yea, theres romantic attraction and sexual attraction i am like that except opposite, im a female who doesnt want to have sex with the opposite gender at all or have any sexual attraction towards men but still have romantic attraction towards some, but with females i do, if i had to label myself i'd say i am biromantic homosexual, i don't know what emma is but she could possibly be biromantic heterosexual, honestly there are so many different sexualitys its hard to keep up with!

Hey Emma I have a similar mindset to you. I always knew from when I was fairly young that something was slightly off about my sexuality. I always had crushes on boys and wanted to be in relationships with them and stuff but something about the idea of being gay idk... kind of scared me? Like my parents always said that it was ok to be gay but at the same time would make odd comments and jokes or isolate gay people and it would upset me idk. Anyway I continued being attracted to the boys and fancying them but in the back of my mind I would always be telling myself "you're not straight!" which was just confusing because I clearly liked dudes but at the same time it made sense. As I got older I became more aware of how pretty girls are and realised that I would probably have no problem like... doing stuff with them.. if it was socially acceptable anyway. This rlly fucking scared me and I ended up telling my mum and sister and they were like LOL don't worry about it just go with the flow, you're just overthinking it because there is stigma and stuff idk. To be honest at the moment I would say I'm more heterosexual because I get crushes on boys and have been in relationships with them n stuff and idk whereas with girls I know in real life I just can't see them in a romantic way. I would definitely kiss a girl and maybe sleep with one if the opportunity came up maybe who knows? But I just can't see them romantically. I never talk about it because I don't want my friends to view me differently. They're not judgmental at all really but I feel like things may be different as we're so close? I just tell people I'm straight because it's easier but I know I'm more likely bisexual and just hetero romantic? Is that a thing? Sometimes I wonder if I have just been influenced by media and society and stuff (idfk lol) to think I would much rather have a relationship with a boy but I guess I'm fine with that because they still make me happy. Like a normal girly friendship (because i'm wayyy a girly girl tbh) but then kissing and sex and serious conversations and commitment sounds weird to me.

Oh my goodness, I feel exactly the same way! Except I feel almost zero sexual attraction to guys?? And the sexual attraction I feel to girls is also practically non-existent. I remember getting super hardcore crushes on guys, to the point where I wouldn't even be able to speak but then when I started secondary school I suddenly started feeling things towards a girl in my year. It was really strange and confusing. I usually say I'm bi now but sometimes I wonder if I'm just gay and in denial or if I'm just straight and overthinking things. This is probably the only video I've come across regarding sexuality that I could relate to so much. Thank you for making this! It was really reassuring!

R O S É H I B I S C U S Yeah, I agree. Since she's attracted to both sexes, then I'd say she's Bisexual Kinsey Scale 1 or 2. Sexual orientation refers to any attraction to a biological sex, not whether you are sexually attracted to a sex. Maybe she can say she's biromantic bisexual, rather than just bisexual? Also she wrongly mentioned gender - gender is the sex you feel in your head, not the sex you are or the sex you're attracted to.

This is EXACTLY how I feel like, except if you switch the genders (I am a girl btw). Its so difficult for me when people ask me if Im a lesbian or if Im bisexual, because I have no clue what to respond with. Ive felt this way for at least 7 years now and I dont think this will change.

When I was around 14 or 15 I did a lot of research into my own sexual identity. I finally settled on Demisexual Pans-Romantic which is one of the broadest labels out there. Socially I identified as bisexual to simplify the terminology. A few years later, around 16 or 17, I decided to just get rid of all labels, but use bisexual as a social defult. It felt freeing to not have a label.

It's not being attracted to people, but personalities. My definition might be a little different from the way your friend defines it, but essentially it's not being able to feel sexually attracted to someone without having an emotional connection with them. It also means that people I have a deep emotional connection with, I might feel sexually attracted to. This side of it has put me in somewhat uncomfortable situations when I was younger. Leading me to push many friends away because I didn't fully understand why I felt the way I did. The last part does not apply in everyone's case, I'm assuming it is more of my Pans-Romantic side showing.

It took me 2 years to find my sexuality, because I didn't know what bisexual was. And then, it took me another 3 years to discover I was a lesbian, and a few months of them were fully confusing because I was in a lovely relationship, but wasn't sure why I didn't like him like I originally did. However, nothing is wrong with not knowing right now, because I reckon eventually you will discover yourself. It takes time. Nobody here in the comments has the right to define you, because they aren't you. I'm very glad you discussed this video, because not many people have made a video about "not being sure", it's always been "I am ...". Lots of love Emma

Also, people used to be mean to me about being gay. Apparently I was "gay for attention", and many people asked me if I fancied them. They'd constantly say things to me just because I was gay and I'm different. They'd get all up in my business, and constantly pester me if I was slightly close to someone (they thought me and my best friend were dating because I sat on her lap). Girls will just take any opportunity to be a mean bitch.

If you can imagine being with a girl, you're probably biromantic, and also, not every girl has boobs or vaginas. I only recently realised that I don't experience any attraction to men, so instead I just use Queer as a label. But if you are looking for a label it sounds like you're heterosexual (you'd date and fuck an dude if you like him) but bi romantic (you would date a girl romantically maybe kiss them and hold their hand, but you wouldn't have sex with them)

It sounds to me like you might have a bit of internalized homophobia. The shame of same gender attraction gets so engrained in us that it makes many of us uncomfortable with our attraction, to the point where we completely suppress it. I'd suggest talking to other lesbian/bi/sapphic women, that was what helped me figure myself out.
@sonnytots

Also I'd suggest not trying to conform to the split attraction model as it can be harmful in the long run (it should really only be used by ace spectrum people). Instead of instantly pushing to label yourself, you need to confront your feelings head on :)

***** The split attraction model can be useful for ace-spec people, but I don't think it's necessary for people who aren't ace, as it can help subconsciously perpetuate their internalized homophobia.

I understand exactly how you feel. I've been attracted to guys my whole life and never found women interesting, but theres always been a couple of women who I've been weirdly attracted to and couldn't explain it at the time. And to this day the only person i've ever admitted it to is my current partner. And even now i'm not sexually attracted to most women but have a crush on a female K-Pop star which confuses me even more. But same as you I can't imagine myself being sexually active with any female. (I'm 29 by the way)

Ash OCR Maybe you're pansexual. Or bi-curious? Which is a form of bisexuality. pansexual 1. not limited in sexual choice with regard to biological sex, gender, or gender identity. Mainly due to the fact that sexual orientation is solely based who you're sexually and physically attracted to (being attracted to someone's (either sex is male and female) outward appearance also known as the _secondary sex characteristics_ and _primarily sex characteristics_ or in other words reproduction organs _as well as_ sexual contact i.g kissing and sexual activity) and not romantic orientation. sexually 1. in a way that relates to the instincts, physiological processes, and activities connected with physical attraction or intimate physical contact between individuals.

Although no body out right called me fish or something but when ever I'd go in to the changing rooms girls out either walk out or move into a different area of the room so I can't see them. I got stares and stuff in the corridors. I've been told I'm not a real lesbian because I don't look it and other bullshit.

+The detective from gallifrey just my mind and thoughts, not even opinion. but it got me thinking, is it that romance is a pansexual concept? Separated as an element of a relationship, romance doesn't need a sexuality or gender identity to be fulfilled. what I wonder with what Emma has described, is being pansexual about romance, hetrosexual about physical sex and a decent person that can see beauty in people regardless of gender, identity or sex.

+Dave Webster It can be and it can't be. I can't just fall in love with a man, no matter how nice he is or what ever he does I just don't fancy men. Ever. I never have. You can be pansexual in the sense that you can fall in love with anyone because it's down to their personally more than their looks. It's often referred to as hearts not parts because pansexuals are very much attracted to personalities rather than appearances.

But no, because, there shouldnt be a need for them, like the day people dont have to make coming out videos is the goals with the LGBTQA+ movement, but in todays world, they are needed, because, the world right now is shit.

You sound EXACTLY like me, word for word, when I was going through my own sexuality confusion. I like men romantically and sexually but I could only ever be romantically attracted to a woman. Contemplating these feelings, I eventually found the perfect "labels" that described me. It's really stupid, but using these limiting terms I am considered, "panromantic demi-heterosexual." Meaning that I can become romantically attracted to just about anyone of any gender but I only become sexually attracted to cis males I am personally bonded with. Labels, I've found, are pretty fucking stupid. Trying to categorize complex human emotion is the worst thing anyone can do for themselves. Truly, in the end, your sexuality is your own business. If someone has issues with it, that's all on them. As most comments here are saying, you are not required to define your taste in relationships to anyone. I think the most important thing anyone can do for themselves is simply to find the person that makes them happy, whether that person is male, female, intersex, gender fluid, etc... :)

It's OK to be unsure. Until you are ready to put a label on your sexuality - DON'T! As someone who counsels young people who are struggling with their sexuality. There is no right and wrong answer. Society is ever evolving and far removed from what it was several years ago. I'm a great believer that there is something attractive in everyone. What you have to ask yourself is 'Do you want to be like her? OR Do you want to be with her? You are over thinking things and putting so much additional pressure upon yourself. Don't shut off to it and just see where life takes you. Take it as far as you want and do what's right for you. Remember not to knock it till you've tried it. Experiment (safely) and see what happens. Perhaps your lack of desire re. sex with a female is deep seated in the negative reactions you had as child? You will get through this - I promise. Ultimately, as long as you can sleep well at night with any decision you make, and pay your own bills - Fuck anyone else!

+eviepops ! That's ok. There are so many different sexualities out there. Don't pigeonhole yourself into one until you are sure & even then it can change. It's not an oath written in blood that will result upon death if amended. It's ok to be anything and/or nothing. I think it's also worth mentioning that Emma points out that she doesn't like vagina. Not everyone of every sexuality likes the same thing. I know many people of many different sexualities that have different sexual tastes. Sexuality is like ice-cream - there are many different flavours, some like one, some like another, some like them all, many prefer to create their own flavour by combining their favourites, those who can take it or leave it and those who just don't like ice cream at all.

I have heard that it's normal for hetero girls to have a phase, as you put it, where they do crush on another girl, maybe it's their best friend, they idolise them a lot. But then they like boys after that. (I think it has to do with growing up. My theory is that you notice some girls who have qualities that you would like for yourself, so you get a little obsessed with her and try to be a little like her. In the end you are closer to how you want to be as a person, just my theory) I am bi, and when I've told my friends who are girls, several of them have admitted to a little girl crush at some point, but they identify as hetero. So if it was only in that time period, you could be mostly hetero. Maybe you are bi, but I would think hetero. But if you are not a fan of labels, just be whatever you want. :) edit. after seeing more of the video, I'd say biromantic heterosexual, and maybe that's what I am too, I just call myself bi for simpleness. But to imagine having sex with another girl, I agree, doesn't feel completely right. But my crushes on girls are big, maybe even bigger than on boys (I'm writing girls and boys, should maybe write women and men lolI'm 30), so I definately like girls
@rosehibiscus1899

ann3tt I agree that she is if she was aesthetically attracted rather than physically attracted to girls because I think that she is kinda sexually attracted to women to some extent but just not in a sexual sense. She has said at 7:35 "I can be physically attracted to a girl." Definition of sexually attraction In a way that relates to the instincts, physiological processes, and activities connected with _physical attraction_ or _intimate physical contact_ between individuals. Meaning of physical attraction: Physical attractiveness is the degree to which a person's physical features are considered aesthetically pleasing or beautiful. The term often implies sexual attractiveness or desirability, but can also be distinct from either (as opposed to aesthetic attraction). Aesthetic attraction and physically attraction are completely different things. Aesthetic attraction differs from sexual attraction. Aesthetic attraction is attraction without desire. Aesthetic attraction: occurs when someone appreciates the appearance or beauty of another person(s), disconnected from sexual or romantic attraction. Physical attraction is whenever you are attracted to another's good looks which in comparison to aesthetic attraction you will experience feelings of nervousness, shyness, butterflies in your stomach or your heart, pulses races, etc.
