@@Krossfyre yeah, I actually think that I didn’t beat it the weekend we had printed it from blockbuster, that it wasn’t until I got it later for my birthday, that I finally was able to retry the final mission like over 100 or more times, and was finally able to beat the game? I just remember how awesome of a game driver was when it first came out and nothing else had been like it?! The music for the setting and the way the cars handled and everything was all very fitting, I was disappointed to discover once I did beat it, that that mission was the last… it made sense I guess, because it was way harder than all the other missions combined-

Most people were limited to that and there's no excuse for devs. The issue I had with free roam was no way to fix the car or reset wanted levels, which made everyone just crash into everything, or try to follow road rules until a cop decided you went 1 km/h overboard and decides to ram you to death, which I assume is traffic penalty for minor speeding in USA because of this game.

YEARS later, of course I tried to complete the hardest level in videogame history: Driver's forced tutorial. It's WEIRD in that the difficulty isn't in skill level, but in obscurity: they don't let you practice, there's a time limit and a HUGE list of tasks you have to do within a minute with no rhyme or reason. But the worst thing wasn't even that, but how it doesn't explain the controls. As you said, there's an in-game movie that DOES show which button is pressed, and that hints you that for some moves you use circle or triangle, but I STILL couldn't figure out how exactly the reverse 180 turn works. Low res in PS1 didn't help matters. Crazy Taxi, a game from around the same era, has obscure driving mechanics that require you to shift to reverse gear THEN back to powerslide or something, I could never manage that either. But that game didn't require mastering it before starting at least. Oh there's an actual game after Driver's tutorial that 99% didn't even see. The test isn't even that hard if you FIGURE OUT what the game wants from you, it's still HORRIBLE design to start with a goddamn exam, Gran Turismo had license tests but those weren't all mushed into one minute at least (tho having to do a clean lap on time limit before starting the most basic tournament was ridiculous, so were starting and stopping exercises that have you drive in a line for 40 seconds each time and then GUESS the braking point). Anyway, late 90s games were real weird with how they wanted to gate the main game behind tests, and even GT later made those optional, thing with these things is that if you figure ho to cheese them they aren't as much of a challenge, just annoyances. So it's the bad/fake difficulty either way.

I actually STILL HAVE my original copy of Driver You Are The Wheelman on PC!! Better yet, does anyone remember that iconic car crashing sound in this game (the one with the distinctive glass shatter heard immediately after impact)? Well, the sound file for that sound ("CRASH1.WAV") was actually recorded from the parking garage scene in the 1978 movie "The Driver"! But there's MORE to this sound effect than that! It was actually used in numerous movies dating from the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s. The following is all the titles that I found it in: 1. The Pink Panther (1963) 2. Batman (1966)(Heard in the Season 1 episode "Batman Makes The Scenes"). 3. Lady in Cement (1968) 4. The French Connection (1971). 5. Vanishing Point (1971) 6. A Reflection of Fear (1972)(heard in trailer at least, I don't know if it's in the movie or not) 7. Conquest of the Planet of the Apes (1972) 8. Fat Albert and the Cosby Kids (1972-1985) 9. M*A*S*H (1972-1983) 10. Shaft's Big Score (1972)(high pitched variant)(heard in trailer at least, I don't know if it's in the final movie or not). 11. The Mechanic (1972)(heard in trailer at least, I don't know if it's in the movie itself or not) 12. The Poseidon Adventure (1972) 13. The Last American Hero (1973) 14. The Seven-Ups (1973) 15. 99 and 44/100% Dead (1974)(heard in trailer at least, I don't know if it's in the movie itself or not) 16. The Towering Inferno (1974) 17. Race With The Devil (1975) 18. The Devil's Rain (1975) 19. The French Connection II (1975) 20. The Kansas City Massacre (1975) 21. Cannonball (1976) 22. Gator (1976) 23. Silver Streak (1976) 24. Damnation Alley (1977) 25. Smokey & the Bandit (1977)(original mono soundtrack only) 26. Wizards (1977) 27. The Driver (1978) 28. Hooper (1978) 29. The Hunter (1980)(heard in trailer at least) 30. The Tom and Jerry Comedy Show (1980)(heard at the beginning of the episode "Get Along, Little Jerry"). 31. Eyewitness (1981)(heard in trailer but NOT the final film) 32. The Fall Guy (1981-1986)(heard in the Season 3 episodes "Dirty Laundry" and "The Last Drive"). 33. Cagney and Lacey (1982-1988)(variant/possible alternate take)(heard in the Season 3 episode "Unusual Occurrence") 34. The Soldier (1982). 35. Hunter (1984-1991)(Heard in the episode "Hard Contract") 36. Impulse (1984)(heard in trailer but NOT in the film) 37. The Terminator (1984)(ONLY in the original mono mix) 38. Commando (1985) 39. Mischief (1985) 40. The Man With One Red Shoe (1985) 41. Stingray (1985-1987)(heard in the Season 2 episode "One Way Ticket to the end of the line") 42. Jumpin' Jack Flash (1986)(heard in trailer but not in the final film) 43. Maximum Overdrive (1986)(heard in trailer, but NOT the film itself) 44. Driver 1 was hard but i did pass it whole as a kid on PC. I just kept trying. And i was rewarded with cheatcodes and newcastle bonus map. As a kid i was bummed out that Driver 2 never came out on PC and i got Driver 3/Driv3r next instead. Music being 1 song per City didnt bother me at all. It gave vibe to each city even if it was one and same bo matter the time of day. I actually dont like chase music on ps1 versions most of the time, as it interupts nicer off chase music especially Havana in driver 2, day music is so nice but chase music and cacophony of awful siren sounds of havana police cars is just too much...

Ah yeah, one of my favourite games of all time... And yes, I also have the PC version first and think it's superior in many ways to the PS1 version - but that may be depending on your taste. "The Interview" I could only beat because of the tutorial with the ghost car - before that I had to play on my older brothers save and just cruised the citys wih different cheats on (yeah I know). I also tried adjusting the difficulty level of the police - if you put them on hard, well... You're in for a challenge. Not only their cars are indestructible (except they flip), they also can drive over 100 mph which makes evading them impossible. In my orpinion the hardest missions are superfly drive (which i love, because of the car, my sister hated it because you only were allowed to damage the car so little), the one with the pickup in SF and the presidents run. BTW, San Fransisco and L.A. are my favourite stages. Great video and greetings from Germany!

I couldn't get past the tutorial when it came out. I couldn't get past the tutorial when I tried the game again a few years later. Probably still couldn't now. I'm sorry but... F this game!! (Driver 2 is cool though)

One of my fave games, did my own retrospective of sorts a while back playing through this one and 2 again. Funny looking back at the dreadful story aha.

My cousin and I actually got pretty good at the tutorial for a while since we didn't have a memory card for a bit as kids

Bro playing this game without a memory card would actually be impossible. At least with some games it was doable, but certainly not DRIVER!

Dam, I remember not having a memo when I first got my ps2. How many nights without sleep to beat some games.

This and the facility+archives cheat in goldeneye both gave me a chance to show off by unlocking things for friends at school.. This isn't nearly as hard as the other ones lol but it is a damn hard first level if you don't know the physics. Almost no room to learn them.

The fact I beat this game below the age of 10, multiple times, baffles me to this day. I think I'd rather go to fucking work than do some of these missions now.

It’s honestly hilarious just how brutally difficult this game gets at some points
@super_pretendo

@@jauwn Oh yeah it's practically RNG at points. If you have enough patience you can at least suffer through some of the worst of it. Great game though, nice to see it looked at again. I'd mostly entertain myself breaking it as a kid. If you flip cars on their side and drive into the roof/underbody of them, at least in the PS1 version, it will launch you outside of the map bounds.

I was a kid that actually loved the replay editor. I played enough to try and keep body damage to a minimum for a perfect replay on many missions. This is the game series (as well as Stuntman), that got me really into driving games. I loved 60's-80's era of vehicle chases too, loose suspensions and heavy rear ends sliding around corners, and of course seeing those hubcaps flying off and rolling down the streets too. As far as games that were hard and never completed from back then, Aero Fighters Assault for the N64. Far from a driving game, of course. But thinking about Driver brought back some more memories from deep storage. I could never get past the first level (I think) with a submersible aircraft carrier.

The graphics and gameplay can't be understated, this game out 2 years and a whole system generation before GTA3, which defined this genre Their prior gane, Destruction Derby was also a favorite
