I think there are a lot of Star Wars fans who, when they started watching the episode I am your mother, immediately dismissed it as a childish episode especially when put next among other more seemingly mature ones. And while everyone is entitled to their own likes and dislikes, I’d like to put forward the idea that while I am your Mother appears to be childish, and it certainly contains many elements of it, it actually explores a difficult theme that often goes unexplored in Star Wars.
On the surface, I am your mother is a straightforward story about a mother and daughter’s relationship with each other. And this was certainly explored during the episode, with Ani and her mother’s relationship issue front and center of the episode’s plot. Most clearly seen when Ani finally blows up and talks about how embarrassed she feels when is next to her mother in public. This character conflict coupled with the numerous fun easter eggs littered throughout the entire episode can make the entire story pretty straightforward. But the episode actually does something pretty clever, developing an underlying theme that permeates throughout everything the characters of the episode do. You see I am your mother isn’t just an episode about family and a daughter mother relationship, it's also a discussion about socio-economic struggles and how that can affect how we interact with the rest of the world especially where the youth is concerned. And it's a topic not often discussed within star wars.
If you go back to the beginning of the episode following wedge antilles’ announcement we open up on a scene where we see a jawa steal a power cell. And as the camera moves closer we can see Ani’s home. And just by looking at the surroundings you are immediately told that Anni and her mother aren’t well off. The environment in which they live is essentially the slum area of the city. Their house sits below what looks to be a highway and the general ruggedness of their surroundings indicate that this is a family trying to make ends meet. And to drive home this idea, Anni and her mother don’t even have a house to live in. Their house is effectively their ship, a tugboat. Likely modified into a makeshift house. The same ship that they would use in the race later on. And the real world equivalence here would be a family living out of their car. And we are repeatedly reminded of their financial situation throughout the entire episode, especially when Ani and her mother come into contact with the Van Reeples, the antagonists of this story. Each time they interact we are shown not just the nastiness of the Van Reeples but a certain classist attitude and discrimination towards those of lower incomes. We repeatedly hear the Van Reeples describe Ani’s home as a flying porta potty, and there’s even a moment where Ani’s mother is told (scene). The class division between the two families is also highlighted through the specific use of accent. Where Ani and her mother can be described as using the more traditional working class accent found in the UK, the Van Reeples use a more posh accent. One that some people might find quite condescending. Now I am not from the UK, so I can’t really say specifically which accent is from which part of the country, but I am pretty certain that this difference in accent was purposefully included to reflect this class divide. So if you know what the names of these accents are be sure to let me know in the comments down below.
And so these moments aren’t just there to create some extra empathy with the audience but it actually directly relates to why Ani and her mother are having relationship issues, and more specifically why Anni feels so embarrassed to be around her mother in public. On the surface, it might just appear to be the case that Anni’s immaturity is the cause of all these problems. Her immaturity has led to her inability to fully appreciate what her mother has done for her, concerned only with the outlook of things. And while this is certainly part of the problem, the real root cause of these relationship problems stems from Ani’s own insecurity about her own family background. Specifically her mother and her own financial circumstance...
