Heinrich you always radiate positive energy. It's quite common to come across arrogant management consultants who are blinded by ambition. I have years of experience with working external consultants for our ongoing change management projects but I havent had a good impression about them. On the other hand, you're so friendly & humble, I'd love to work with professionals like you. I'm not surprised you were hired, above everything else you have great personality. Hey Heinrich, Thanks for sharing your CV. Currently I'm seeking berechnungsingenieur role in Germany. I have some specific question related to work experience. Did you mention your role in the perticular job or your achievements? Sometimes for an intern position of short duration, roles are pre defined? Secondly, does German job market always demand CV tabular format as compared to infograhic CV?
@FirmLearning
4 жыл бұрын
Hi Ganesh, In your CV, you should ideally both mention your role and your key achievements for all major work experience positions that you have. The tabular format for your CV is indeed the standard, would recommend you to go for that, especially when applying to more conservative roles such as engineering (compared to e.g., working in a marketing agency). Lots of success to you in Germany! Best, Heinrich

Most of the information we find on the internet (that is in English) mostly focuses on the North American region, I think. It is so helpful to have someone particularly in Europe/DACH/Germany sharing experiences. Your profile was already impressive with LMU (and later INSEAD, LSE). Do MBB in Germany have their target schools? If yes, would you mind sharing some info about what you think are target schools? Thanks P/S: Congratulation on the new journey at St.Gallen.

Hi, really appreciate the content! Your slides guide is personally one of my favourites. I have a question as well, do you have any tips or advice for an average college student for the CV content? Am in my last year of college, haven't done my practicum yet but I have worked in customer support. my grades aren't honors level and I don't have much chance with extra curriculars due to the pandemic. I am also eying a practicum at Accenture since my school is affiliated but I am worried I may not make the cut since my CV is lacking. Any pointers that may help is greatly appreciated! I like your video, it's very helpful! I was wondering if you could maybe go a little more into your experience at CDTM? Like how hard was it to complete that while doing the normal degree, how much hours did you have to put in per week, what kind of things did you learn to do (more theoretical or hands-on) and did it overlap with the schedule of your regular university lectures? Thanks in advance.
@FirmLearning
3 жыл бұрын
Hi Milena, thanks for your comment! Yes, CDTM was a very great and formative experience for me. Can absolutely recommend to do it if you have the opportunity. As it is only relevant for people in Munich, probably a bit too niche as a topic for the video :) But overall it was not super hard to complete but does require some time. Personally, it was absolutely possible for me to complete it in parallel to my Bachelor studies with no issues. The learnings are very hands-on. The schedule is made to work well with most regular lectures (though of course sometimes overlaps are inevitable, but usually there is always a way to make it work). The McK / BCG office in Munich is also filled with CDTM alumns, so will help for consulting as well. Very BIG recommendation from my side to do it!! Best, Heinrich

Thank you for the video. I'm about to graduate soon and writing my thesis and looking for an internship in the environment, which seems to be extremely (if not the most) competitive field in Europe. It is strange to see your CV without a photo as all the companies in Germany I applied required not only this one but also citizenship, visa and marital status, what can be prohibited in many countries. After sending far more than 100 applications and getting less than 5 calls, it seems like only supermen with a million years of experience, speaking fluently 100 languages and having a PhD at the Yale University can get a position as an intern in the top companies.

Hey Heinrich, How they are looking at the grades individually courses and GPA....is it possible to make up for the grades by doing online courses and get a certificate?? What is the min GOOD GRADE you will say as Germany grading system ?? I am doing my bachelor degree and I am almost at the end of the program semester but I haven’t done any internship till now and I am planning to apply soon and working on new skill,on that note what do you suggest ? Thank you in advance🙂 Thanks a lot for the video 👍🏼
@FirmLearning
4 жыл бұрын
Hi Elizabeth, Regarding the GPA, online courses are of course not bad but will in most cases not compensate for a sub-par GPA I am afraid. In the German system, a grade of 1.X will always be a first goal you should strive for. But in general, more important than the exact grade will the the relevant rank in your cohort. E.g., if you only have a GPA of 2.1 but belong to the top 5% with this grade, this will be better than having a 1.9 but only being in the top 30%. Regarding internships, yes this is important and I do encourage you to apply for an internship. With a business background, you should aim to have 2-4 internships until the end of your studies (of course, quality and length matter). Lots of success to you! Best, Heinrich

Hi - thanks for sharing your CV it was really insightful! I'm 23 and I've been working in tech for 2 years now. I started in sales after my degree and I've now gone into a specialist position. What would you advise doing / learning in order to make the switch to consultancy? And would you recommend joining in a more experienced position or as part of their graduate schemes given the experience I have?
@FirmLearning
4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching! With your Sales background, you could join an MBB firm in their Marketing & Sales practice, this is for sure an option if the rest of your profile fits. Would encourage you to look for opportunities to work on conceptual / strategic tasks as well, as this is important for consulting firms and will be looked for. The highest position you will be able to join without prior consulting experience (in most cases) is a Senior Consultant ("Senior Associate" in McK lingo) position. Lots of success to you! Hey Heinrich! Thanks for your input. I’m German but I’ll keep this question in English since it might be interesting for non-German speakers aswell. What’s your opinion on including a personal photo in the cv? Eventhough its pretty common in Germany (not so in other countries) to include one I have a feeling that an increasing number of applicants that want to get into MBB (and IB) decide not to do it - some of them even say you’re chances worsen if you do it. What do you think? Have a nice weekend! Best, justus
@FirmLearning
4 жыл бұрын
Hi Justus, thank you - appreciate it! In most online application portals, there is an option (sometimes also required) to upload a photo independently from your CV. This is also what I did when I applied to McKinsey (I applied via the standard online form). If you apply directly by sending your documents to HR, I would probably still include a photo on your CV in Germany. For other countries, I would decide based on what is the norm in the local culture. Overall, I believe today it is much less important to include photos than only a couple of years ago as most people have LinkedIn profiles where you can look up a photo if someone wants to. Best, Heinrich

Hi Sivananda, you mean whether you should include a "Skills" section on the CV? Yes you can definitely do this! I included this in the "other qualifications" section. Best! Heinrich

Thanks for sharing your exp. 👍 Just one question. In case, someone worked with a firm as an independent consultant (while doing MBA), should he/she put that exp under work experience column, OR it should be out under project column? Asking coz I don't know the norms of how these types of exp are being treated by MBB.

Hi, would depend a bit on the type and scope of the work, but in general I would place it as work experience. Best! Heinrich

Hi Heinrich, so glad I found your channel - the vid is extremely informative and enjoyable! My question is, if a candidate's highest level of education is Master's, do top consulting firms in Europe still take their undergrad GPA and school ranking into account? FYI: My undergrad uni is a top one in Vietnam (which of course isnt desirable in Europe), undergrad GPA is only 3.6, but I managed to get into a UK target school's Masters in Management programme.
@FirmLearning

Hi Pham, thank you - great to hear! Thanks for watching! Yes, consulting firms will still look at your undergrad GPAs, usually also at your high school grades (at least in Germany, your high school grade is supposed to have a solid correlation with success as a consultant). Though of course, your UK target school Master will be looked at very favorably as well. For your undergrad GPA, especially for a school in Vietnam which might be difficult to assess for European HR departments, it would be helpful to show your relative performance, e.g., ideally being in the top 10% of students in your cohort. Hope this helps! Best, Heinrich

Wow thank you, you just reminded me to mention my own ranking in the CV. Also, can you please elaborate on the correlation of high school grades and consulting? This is such an interesting point that I've never heard of.
@FirmLearning

@@lilflower1434 Sure thing! Apparently the HR teams run statistics to understand what signals in an application can predict future success as consultant. And the high school performance seems to be a good predictor, which is why it is still looked at in the application process. Might depend on the country though, I can confirm this for Germany. Best, H

Is there any chance at becoming a consultant without university?
@FirmLearning
3 жыл бұрын
Hi Damo, there might be opportunities with smaller boutique firms or very specialized roles within the larger firms, if you have the right profile. In general, it will be almost impossible to start at an MBB firm in a regular junior consultant position without university. Best, H

Hi Heinrich, thank you so much for sharing this! I was wondering what you meant by „quantifying your achievements“ in the end of the video? Could you maybe give an example on what that would look like for one of them? Thank you very much, Simon.

Hi Simon, sure thing, thanks for watching! Quantifying your achievements mainly means to put the result / impact that you delivered in an organization into numbers to make it more tangible. Check out this video, here I review some CVs and discuss this concept on a couple of occasions. kzitem.info/news/bejne/laqisKSKa5ebZ4o Lots of success to you! Best, Heinrich

Hi is it mandatory to know german to work in management consulting firms in Germany ?
@FirmLearning

Hi, this of course depends on the individual company but in general yes, most German firms will require you to speak German, at least for their client-facing roles. For McKinsey in Germany I can confirm that this is the case. Best, Heinrich

Thanks for the great information, Heinrich! In your experience/opinion, how important is the formatting and/or style of the CV? I would consider my CV very playful (with colors, icons, a picture, etc.) compared to yours - is this a disadvantage? Is there a commonly accepted standard or formatting style?

Hello Heinrich, what if we have a gpa below 3.0? Should we absolutely write the GPA on CV? or would it be okay if we dont write?

It depends on how long it has been since you graduated. Recent grads must show their GPA but if you have considerable experience it is no longer important to show your GPA.

@@sweatobertrinderknecht3480 Realistically it will be difficult for you to get an internship at McK as a high school student if you do not know any senior leaders of the firm. Do you have any relevant backoffice skills, e.g., graphics design, IT / handling hardware, exotic language skills...? You could just try to reach out to HR / reach out to local leaders of the Zurich office via LinkedIn and see how far you get. Lots of success to you!! Best, Heinrich
