Thank you for this wonderful feature, Simon! You followed my own solve path very closely. I think this was the first puzzle I felt the need to just tackle on my own (mostly because it was taking Simon FOREVER to disambiguate the 12 circles). SamuPiano here! I invented pea lines a bit over a month ago :) These lines were originally going to be called "split pills", but I realized if I colored them green I could market them as "split peas," or "split P's", where the "P" would stand for "pill arrow." I had an absolute blast creating the original split peas puzzle, and it was so much fun that I started setting a lot more puzzles with this constraint. Since then, it has started to catch on. Sujoyku approached me about a month later, and we ended up collaborating on two split pea + line puzzles, which were a lot of fun! This is his first solo puzzle with these lines, and I was one of the original testers and thought it was utterly brilliant! All this to say, I'm so glad ChatGPT agrees that this puzzle is exquisite :)

I much prefer Mark's approach in cases like this, of removing any colours once they've exhausted their usefulness, instead of blindly perpetuating them through the solve for no actual benefit. I find this sort of visual clutter to only be counter productive. E.g. the 8 in box 8 was missed for quite some time despite the other 8s all pointing at it being purple, so it seemingly didn't help at all.

@@tisfu17 indeed Mark always says at some point "the color has done its job" then removes it. That's what I often do as well. It happened a few times though, on "very colorful" puzzles that I found it a bit bland or sad when colors were gone. So maybe Simon just like colors for the look of it, beyond their practical use? I remember he once told someone during his messages to switch paper sudoku for software, because you can do coloring. ;)

AI generated voice narration can't work out if the typed in word 'content' means conTENT (happy, satisfied) or CONtent (that which is contained) from context, which a child can do. The same goes for all homographs that have different syllabic stresses which affect their meanings. And yet people claim it has achieved consciousness and will soon take over the world. Conversely, dictate the words "He ignored their pleas" into your iPhone and it will auto fill "He ignored there please" every time. Heavy on the 'A', and very light on the 'I' if you ask me.

I liked the pea lines. Found the 12-pair for the circles rather immediately. The leap then to the 2-circle leading out with 789 and 689 was harder to do. But then noting that the 2-circle would have matching 34-ends was super helpful. Then the minimum circle left would the 5 and that must be along the diagonal since that cannot reach sixty-something. And the 5 being matched with a 678 really put on the restraints. I found the 9 in box 6 to be rather beautiful. I found one of its neighbors and whatever I put in it, it had to go with a nine. Bingo. Edit: forgot to mention the other beautiful thing, how the 6789-options for the circle in r8c1 fixes which circle is the 2. And also which is the 3.

28:40 I don't think those corner circles could ever have been 8s because to total 58, the line needed 8-9 pairs in boxes 3 and 7, which would place the 8 on the line (and therefore not in the circle) in both boxes. I think.

Yes, Simon goes on a wild goose chase looking at high digits. The starting point is that each 3-cell line must have a 1 or a 2 in one of its circles. With four 3-cell lines, that means that the two peas that have two 3-cell lines coming out of them must be a 1 and a 2. The 2 must now be flanked by a 3 and a 4 on its branches, because you can't have a 3-cell line adding up to more than 24. The line going between boxes 4 and 7 must have a tens digit of 3 or 4, which means that r1c1 must be the 2 in order to get a 3 or 4 into the pea in box 4.

Funny that you mentioned the AI - problems with "strawberry" - I tried that as well when I found it out, but it seemed to already be fixed in MS Copilot. But then I tried it with the German word "Erdbeere" (=strawberry), and asked Copilot to count the "e"s : Copilot spelled the word letter by letter, and gave the answer "2". When I asked to please count again, it did the exact same spelling, but returned "3" instead.

The most likely explanation is that so many people were talking about how ChatGPT got the answer wrong for "strawberry", so other large language models started adding their replies of "strawberry has 3 R's" into their algorithms, so they copied the accurate answer more often. But likely no one has done the same for "erdbeere" so it has no one else to copy.

Nice, solved in 46:25. I spotted the 12 pair right off the bat, and the fact that every pair had to have a digit from 12345... and then spent the next 20 minutes trying to figure out anything else. My a-ha! moment came with the realization that wherever the 2 went in a circle, the length-3 lines coming off of it could only sum to 23 and 24, so the other circles on those lines are a 34 pair. That forces a 5 onto one of the main diagonal circles. R8C1 then comes from the set 6789, making it a 1's digit in whatever sum its line belongs to, and it's partner in R4C2 must therefor be a valid 10's digit, which has to be from 34, forcing the 2 into R1C1 and 1 into R6C6. The line from R4C2 to R8C1 has a max value of 44 (assuming R4C1 is 8, its lowest possible value), which forces 3 into R4C2 as the 1's digit has to be 6 or larger if the 10's digit is a 4. That resolves R2C4 (4), R1C4 (8), R4C1 (9), R5C1 (1), R6C1 (4), R7C1 (3), R8C1 (7), R9C1 (5), and R1C9 (6). The circles in box 9 are then an 89 pair. The rest of the puzzle solves trivially.

My ground rule for dealing with AI is to keep in mind that it can't lie or tell the truth, because those require memory and intent and it is too stupid for either-it just puts likely words together and we interpret them as true or false based on knowledge of the real world. So for anything factual, it shouldn't be trusted, such as Simon's "strawberry" with two Rs. It doesn't even know what a strawberry is. But the quality of a puzzle is subjective, of course, and you have external human verification, so the risk here is minimal. Though AI is really bad with geometry and math (and can't see SudokuPad), so I doubt it can give insight into any puzzles with an interesting solve path or anything like that, haha.

10:30 You could just as well look at the main diagonal and ask yourself how big the tens digit can be on that. The diagonal is interesting, not because of what its minimum could be if there were no repeating digits but what its maximum can be with repeated digits. [89] + [789] + [89] 17 + 24 + 17 Or 58. The highest tens digit for that diagonal is a 5. BUT, the diagonal also SHARES start/end points with other lines. And [789] + [789] is 48. So the biggest tens digit for the lines that are zigging and zagging from the main diagonal is a 4. And those two lines meet at R6C6 and that shares two more lines that needs a tens digit that can only be as high as a 2. In any case, the low digits need to be used as tens digits. And looking at the lines in the grid, there are 5 different configurations where you need a tens digit. So you actually have to use ALL tens digits from 1 to 5. At least that's what i can see. I'm out of time now.

That reveals us immediatly 5 location as in column 1 we get 6789 quad as 3 of them must be on that line and 4th must be in that circle row 8

The r's in strawberry thing is true. But what's interesting is that you can point out to chapgpt that it's wrong and encourage it to find an alternative process for determining the answer, and it can do it. It recognises that its typical token parsing process is inadequate for the task, and in my case it elected instead to spell the word out letter for letter and count the R's as it went, which was succesful.

Strange to see, how long it took Simon not to think about the 4circle line in the aspect of the lower segment, considering 12 are gone, and 34 should be connected to 2, 5 is gone for diagonal. the logic on the diagonal line confuses me. Simon said "It has to be at least 15" then proceeded to get rid of larger numbers which would have given him the ability to move around the minimum numbers. He removed the smaller numbers from box 5 because box 7 had to be 15 when he could have made box 7 an 89 and used 5 and 6 in box 5 instead.

Are you talking about 43:50 onwards? He has worked out r7c2 cannot be a 6 so there is definitely a 6 on the diagonal in box 7. It cannot be 8+9 anymore (there would be no digit available for r7c2). Since there now has to be a 6 on the diagonal in box 7, the maximum it can be is 15 (6+9), which means the diagonal in the other two boxes has to be maximised (24 & 17) to get the minimal overall total of 15+24+17=56.

Surely Simon is wrogn about the secret this week. The diagonal couldn't have 4 and 5 in the circles, as the remaining digits would sum to 36, which isn't a concatenation of 4 and 5 in any order. Luckily 3 and 6 also sum to 9, so if the circles were 3 and 6, the diagonal could be 1+2+4+5+7+8+9=36, which is a concatenation of 3 and 6, in that order. I only tell my very favourite people this.

@43:28 Is the min/maxing backwards? "Minimum 15" doesn't rule out 89. (Edit: Never mind. Still getting used to Simon explaining simple things extensively, and less simple....not at all.)

I find it really frustrating when Simon spots the start of a piece of logic and begins to explain, my brain then picks it up and runs with it, spotting a load of stuff, and then Simon dosen't see the conclusion of what he started. Example: When thinking about the 3/4 pair in the 20's 3 cell lines, I had realised fairly early that the 6 cell line in Boxes 4 and 7 had to have a 3 or 4 tens unit on R4C2, which resolves the 1/2 pair

In the spirit of asking AIs about sudoku stuff, I asked Gemini (the free version) to tell me a joke about sudoku. After a couple of not-great attempts, it got locked into telling me the same joke over and over, no matter how I varied the prompt: "I tried to start a sudoku club, but everybody kept trying to solve it on their phones."

At 9:00 if the digits couldn’t repeat on a full length line (if it was vertically up an entire column) then the end cells wouldn’t be 4 and 5, because the middle digits would add to 36. 3 and 6 is the only valid combination for a 9-cell line without repeats.m Someone should make another puzzle with this happening, because I think it would catch Simon out that time too!

They didn't correct it, so much as it is self correcting. It's also possible to ask the same question and get different answers. AI is weird in how it processes and applies data, and it's intentionally designed to be flexible in its "thinking", which, therefore, guaranteeing that some of the time it will give incorrect answers. It's actually this capacity to essentially mess up that also allows for greater perceived creativity and humanity.

@@jaredwonnacott9732 My main use of ChatGPT is to proofread text, and suggest rephrasing. It's a language AI. Commenting, analyzing, rephrasing, translating a text, that's usually things it can be very good at. It can be very nice if I want to tone down emotional language, or to get a more coherent flow. But it takes extra time, so I didn't bother using it for this text.

I believe that ChatGPT meant there are two R sounds in the word strawberry, and indeed there are only two /r/ sounds. But if you will call it 'the letter R', I.E., How many letters R are there in the word strawberry, then it consists of three R's. That just means that R means to ChatGPT, both a phoneme and a letter, depending on how you define it - and apparently, if you don't define it - R is the phoneme /r/, first of all... Technically, that's how a child that doesn't read and write would answer the question... Quite scary...

Very nice puzzle with fresh ideas and this time ChatGPT was right. But pay attention: if ChatGPT doesn’t know the answer, it make a story up, with other words - it lies. I have got at least three times wrong answers. Ok, maybe I shouldn’t asked, what I knew without asking, but anyway…
