This is a time lapse of river valley fog from September 30, 2022, in the Winooski River valley in Richmond, Vermont. The fog forms from air that has cooled near the land surface on those clear cold nights that allow heat loss from the land surface flowing into river valleys that are relatively warmer and more humid due to the river water retaining heat. When the vapor above the river is cooled by the cold air flowing down into the river valley, it forms fog when the water vapor is cooled to the dew point temperature. The resulting fog makes it easy to see how air is a fluid that can flow down a river valley, just like water in the river channel.
