I own a 1986 and a 1989 Isuzu Trooper. My 89 is all fixed up, has 350K miles on it and is lifted and has a winch. My 86 is all stock. They are both amazing offroad and super reliable. Easy to work on and rock solid. They do run forever, and some people do not maintain them. If a car is over 30 years old, it will need some love and attention. If you keep them up, they will likely last another 30 years. I will not be around anymore, but hopefully my son will enjoy them. That is, unless cars will be required to have a covid shot in the near future. Because us and our cars and pets will rather die standing in resistance than on our knees in surrender.

You should honestly try to digitise that owner's manual. It'd be really cool to just have a random piece of history online for some bored guy to stumble upon in the future.

Sir. Would you kindly share with me the owners manual? I just bought the same truck and it needs some help mechanically speaking and the owners manual would be a great addition to the restoration of my truck. Thank you for your time.

I just got my dad's 1991... It sat for 4 years and I just started trying to get it to run. New fuel pump and filter but it runs like crap. I had and '88 so I know how vacuum dependent they are so I plan on a lot of hose in the future. I noticed someone took the air pump off along with that AC compressor... Can't wait to see how your repairs go.

I deleted the fuel injection, computer, smog and all the sensors. With a weber carb it is super reliable. The itec is a mess in my opinion.

I got my 88 trooper 4x4 not running for about 500 bucks about 2 years ago. And I just started rebuilding it . Got it running and the 4x4 working my buddy has been hooking me up with all kinds of parts you can't buy and I've been buying everything I can get my hands on. It's a really great little classic suv. Not a crv or anything but still nice. I'm just a old Honda fan boy. But I do enjoy old Japanese vehicles. When I run out of things to do I'm probably going to trade it for a old 5 speed crv that needs work.

I bought one new in 87 traded it in for a new 89, loved it except the engine's were to small and under powered. Had to turn of ac whenever passing someone, or going uphill. Also had trouble with overheating, and head gasket. Now drive an fj, very happy.

What you are pointing to for the AC compressor is where the smog pump goes which someone deleted. The AC Compressor is under the PS pump as I am sure you know now.

Yep, and that annoying "chirping" sound on the exhaust side is likely from whatever kind of plugs were used to replace the air rail where it threaded into the head. I remember that sound very well.

I still have my 91 trooper. I've had many 4x4 vehicles over the years, and I still consider my trooper the best 4x4 out of them all, hands down! Finding parts are almost impossible. Cant even find them in junk yards. Do you know what price running troopers go for those days? I do have some rust on mine, but my grey interior is in awesome shape. I'm putting a new clutch in mine. My trooper is a 2.8 litter v6, and has a 5 speed manual transmission. Red.

Not the first generation..its second..the first had round headlights this is the trooper 2 ,,(i have one and love it) given me lots of trouble but i rebuild it when needed .. easy to fix exhaust stuff on these ..i just replaced mine myself plus mine had a cracked head so beware if it overheats.. got a new head online and replaced it ..so far runs great.. i know these like the back of my hand so if you need any advice look me up. OH and make sure the crank puly is tight too....they have a tendency to loosen..you will know when it starts sounding like a broken rod..also replace timing belt,,, they break and then its broken valves for you.. could be this never happens to yours but i would check that stuff out...

@@tomorrowcomestoday1621 I use 10w 30 as well. it works good in that engine..but when i idle the pressure drops quite a bit..so i have upped it to 20/40 as of late.. I don't think its a problem mixing oils myself and have done it for years in a pinch traveling... I also use a ring sealer additive called engine restore it comes in a grayish bottle,, i did tests with a cylinder pressure test meter before and after and have definitive good results.but it sounds to me yours are fine i had some issues with plugs that broke off from heat and scared valves and cylinder walls though. Only problem is it needs to be used again especially if you change oil or are adding a lot.. my favorite is Shell's Rotella T ,,, Reading a bit up on it and the Rottela T It has additives that help keep older engine running well. its said race mechanics use it.. As far as the timing band goes I cant recall what i used but i did reserch a bit to find the best one overall.. if i dig up a receipt ill post it.. I just did the top end rebuild and just took it to CA smog check and its the lowest numbers i have ever seen... YEEEHAA
