According to Car Gurus, MSRP for an 81 Toyota 4x4 was between $8-9K. Plugging $8500 and 1981 into an inflation calculator comes up with a little over $26K in 2021 dollars. Assuming you don't uncover any major problems, you got a pretty good deal. Since it came from California, there's no need to keep any of the CA specific emissions control junk. You'll probably be happier with a 49 state OEM or an aftermarket carb. You should also check the evaporative emissions controls. If something is plugged up it could cause symptoms you're experiencing. As a reluctant CA resident I'd like to see that license plate destroyed in Demo Ranch video.

I am late to the party, but two things: 1) I have never identified more with anything you have said than "Between kids and work, I just don't have time for my stuff anymore." I felt that in my soul. 2) My first thought would be water in your gas line. But then it started and ran for a while. That would send me to the fuel filter or pump. Don't worry about the old gas; it would still run with old gas, just not well. Filters are so cheap, I would replace it anyway, and I can't imagine the pump is still very good. It is either bad or about to go bad, because that looks like the OG pump. Clean the carb regardless; that can only help.

22R had 97 HP. Watch the timing chains. You might have an intermittent clog in the fuel pick-up. Putting fuel in can knock it loose, then as you run in will get sucked back in. The mechanic had an idea, reached into the tank with a claw grabby thingy (that's technical jargon there, sorry), and pulled out a piece of blue shop paper towel about an inch square.

Springtails are good for bioactive habitats for reptile or any other bioactive enclosure ... the eat and breakdown poop and whatnot .. They don't bother humans or bite.. or maybe its some new species of flea and matts gonna get devoured in his sleep ... either way , hope it helps XD

@@atomicbogator6799 The 22R shares nothing with the 2.7 2TRFE. The TR engine family was an all new engine architecture that didn’t show up until 2004. Even the RZ engine family that was in use from 1989-2004 was distinct from the 22R/R engine family. The 2.7 TR is also notorious for needing to have the cylinder head reworked ( I.E. new valve guides and valve job) below 200K. Calling the R and TR the same engine family is like calling the small block Chevy and LS the same engine family. They share no DNA architecturally speaking...

The fuel tank only pulls from the three quarter level, it needs a new fuel tank, or fuel pick up. In the movie Back to the Future, Marty McFly, played by Michael j.Fox wanted a Toyota 4 x 4 pickup truck. At the end of the third movie you see him racing needles... Needles was played by Flea the bass guitar player for Red Hot Chili Peppers.

I had an 80s truck that had sat for a long time and the steel fuel pick up lines in the tank had corroded pinholes above the fuel level at the time, so it ran fine with a full tank but when the fuel level got below the pinholes it acted like it ran out of gas until you fill it back up.

Replace the fuel filter. If there is enough garbage in the fuel, over time it will collect in the filter and plug it up. After sitting for a while, the garbage will settle out and it will start and run until the fuel flow causes the garbage to plug the filter again. I've seen it many times.

If I were to guess, the fuel pump is bad. Pretty common on the late 70's early 80's Toyotas. The other issue to watch out for is vapor locking the fuel pump/carb. I've seen Yodas run perfectly fine for 40 miles and then all of a sudden, they up and die. The heat from the engine starts boiling the fuel. If I were you, I would do an electric fuel pump and install a mechanical fuel pump delete kit. You'd also need to find a fuel pressure regulator that you could adjust the PSI down below 5 psi since the Yoda carbs only like 3-5 psi and most electronic fuel pumps produce at the min 6-9 psi, not to mention you'd need a return line. I personally would do the electric fuel pump conversion. I've never been a fan of mechanical fuel pumps. Just my 2 cents 😁😊

Matt, fuel filter first (use a clear plastic inline one). Use a simple automotive test light to see if you are getting electricity/juice to that type of fuel pump when the key is in the run position. Trace and check your wires, electrical connections, electric relays (fuel pump?) and any resetting circuit breakers if it has any (you need both a Haynes and also a Chilton's repair and troubleshooting manual for that specific truck), order them new, you'll need them. Removing the fuel line into the carb to see if it squirts fuel pulses when you are cranking the engine over fast with two batteries with your thumb over the end of the line will tell you if the pump is working or not. I love those '81 Toyota long and short bed 4x4's with manual transmissions and 22R engines. ;)

As for the Toyota, the filter will be in the tank, actually it's not a filter but a "sock". They are a pain in the A to change. If the fuel pump doesn't fix it try that, if the sock is fine then the the eccentric on the cam might be worn or loose. The eccentric is a round "lobe" on the cam that pushes the fuel pump arm as the engine turns making it pump. as for the bugs, could they be springtails? Looks ike fleas but are smaller.
@invictusbp1prop143
2 жыл бұрын
Gotta think a can lobe being the problem would be like the last resort thing to check tho wouldn't ya? And it wouldn't be intermittent if that were the issue. That said, the pick up could be the issue for sure. Clogged filter in the tank or I'm thinking there's an inline somewhere underneath too. Just need to trace lines to find it for sure. Idk how long it sat before he bought it but could def stir up some trash in the tank and make things hang up on ya.
@racerex340
2 жыл бұрын
Isn't the fuel filter on those Toyota trucks up on the passenger frame rail near the wheel well? Sure, there may also be a sock on the pickup in the tank, but there should also be an in-line filter on the send line. I could be wrong, haven't wrenched on one in over 20 years.
