The oil leak will probably be coming from the oil cooler in the middle of the "v" of the engine. The seals perish on the v6 engines up to around 2011 ish. Big job, replace the swirl flap motor too if it turns out to be that. Lean over the wing and at the back of the engine if you can see it with a torch and you may see oil leaking down from the top of the gearbox from a little drain hole near the turbo.

Way back when I worked in London I used to see these MB S class being driven around or parked with a driver. Upon closer inspection they were mainly S320 diesels. It seems they cars for the upper echelons of the management of City firms to be whisked around. I understand the cars were operated in the same way a mini cab works, but were more upmarket than a Nissan Primera. If that's the case, these were probably bought at fleet prices and without the VAT, so would be considerably cheaper than 60K GBP. I imagine if they're run for 3 years and sold on, the car would cost the operator close to nothing other than routine maintenance. Since the operator is looking for the cheapest package/cheapest to operate, they'll go with the poverty spec. I did look into the costs of buying a 3 year old S320 diesel and they and were around 30K GBP about 10 years ago. Loved the "little drive". You're keeping us smiling.

Chris Anderson With my experience with Mercedes, the lower the mileage the more it leaks. Those gaskets get brittle. Once had a 20 year old W203 with just 50,000 miles and I literally had to replace every single gasket apart from the head gasket. Meanwhile I had a GLK350 with 120,000 miles that never leaked oil.

Ask any self respecting M-B tech 👍🏼 and they’ll tell you the same. Both engines are fine power plants and obviously have their inherent issues but the earlier straight 6 are known to be virtually indestructible (if properly looked after) and easier to work on when needed. 👍🏼 BTW... it definitely needs better, bigger wheels 👍🏼👌🏼

Another great review; truthful & humorous. With regard to the lack of extras, I remember my late Father buying a brand new Merc 300E from the main dealer in Macclesfield. He was gobsmacked that the radio/cassette player (!) and sunroof weren't included in the price. When he died, I offered the car back to the dealer because it was too big for my Mother to drive and she had issues grappling with a Nissan Micra! It was 5 years old, had 18000 miles on the clock with a full service history from themselves and they declined it on the grounds that the car's interior was more popular in Japan than in the U.K. Think I called the sales manager a tosser and drove the car back to London, where I was living at the time and sold it within three days, for a really good price. The whole experience really put me off Mercs and their main dealers, to whom my Dad had been really loyal.

I remember when I bought a '97 850 Volvo T5 and i asked if it had reversing sensors as the '95 BMW 318Ti I replaced it with had them. The seller said yes, just one in the middle.. Bloody tow bar! It used to work though and no one would park too close to me. I had a '99 Mercedes CD220 CDi estate that turned out to be a right rust bucket and the gearbox went kapput. Had to scrap it n the end as it was too far gone. But the ride was nice. It was softer on the suspension than the Volvo but firmer seats. Apparently they are firmer for comfort on long journeys. I'd still choose a Volvo though for comfort anyday. My current car, a 2010 XFs ticks all the boxes apart from getting stuff into the boot and is a joy to drive. I even got 54 mpg out of it when we were allowed out on the roads. Now I'm getting 3 weeks to a gallon.

Electric window buttons fail after a few tears but me being in the motor trade for 44 years you can pick up some stuff that other people don't know. Try spraying the buttons with WD-40 it might not work straight away but give it time pressing the button up and down and it usually fixes the problem but I have known it to take a couple of days pressing the switch every now and again, best to try it before getting a secondhand part off Ebay for a million quid.

Basically the same as the one I had - it has 2 batteries one small one that basically only starts it and one in the back (right up behind the rear seats) when the back one goes low it can cause all sorts of issues and gremlins - check under the centre armrest and see if there is a little odd shaped "pod" if its there that is the bluetooth adaptor (if not there its been nicked or was never there to start with) see if the dvd player works and look to see if you have an SD card or PCMCIA-Card Reader (compact flash) under that flap as they are a good way to get some music in if you don't want to use CD's. (but buy a decent CF adaptor as the cheap ones wont work) If you suddenly lose power on a run or the car decides it does not want to go into gear switch off, wait until you hear the computer power down (with a click) and then restart - it might work then, but if it does that there is a gearbox fault that you can read all about on the forums :-/

A Brandenburg gate on wheels. You could always sell it to somebody who needs to self isolate alone, once it has been prepped for sale. Or, turn it into an 'Air BnB'

Soft-closing doors were first introduced in the W140 S-Class model in 1991 and they have been a standard S-Class feature ever since. So I think the soft-closing doors on your car are just like the driver's power window: Broken.

Soft close isn't standard on UK S Class's. Its an option

I had an A8 d3 from 2004 with no optional extras as well - no parking sensors, no automatic headlamps, no automatic windshieldwipers, nothing really but it did have xenon lights and heated seats, was very light the car only had 1700kg so it had that going for it....

Ha, the 2006 CLS 500 I bought earlier this year has very few extras too, but I actually saw that as an advantage as it's less to go wrong. Satnav, Xenons, parking sensors & AMG body styling, that was about all the original owner ticked on the options list for mine, but that still brought the list price to over £61k from a base of £53k in 2006.

Matt, I hear you about the spec(lessness) but I think its charming simply becouse its fundamentally very good. I have a C200 classic, impulsively purchased recently, and that has nothing in it. I still prefer solid and thorough engineering over trinkets.

Sounds like your project car could do with some retro fit parking sensors, maybe a camera?! Watched most of your videos and really enjoy them. Keep up the good work!

Yes! This generation of s class is getting really cheap, finally a channel is truly devoted to basically help us

There's a reason for these being cheap. What they lack in purchase price, they make up in ongoing repair costs.

@@nasirmahmood5684 definitely, it is a shame, most brands will still practice the same prices as if the cars were new for repairs even if the parts don't cost that much

There is a couple of them in Ireland for less than 4k euro. One with the AMG styling up for 3700euro on UK plates. Great video 👍 Look forward to seeing how this goes

I hope the addition of rear parking sensors was one of the project items for the car. But your totally right, who in their right mind would not opt to at least get rear factory parking sensors ( Especially on an S-class) ? It would be as absurd as not opting to get A/C on any new car these days!
