That's certainly a good old Perkins engine, I worked at the Perkins factory in 1970-71 (UK) at that time the engine of the day was the 4108 the one just after yours though virtually the same. The engine was shipped to the US and used in Massy Ferguson tractors. It was used by Sir Francis Chichester’s round-the-world yacht Gipsy Moth III. .30,000 were built at the Peterborough (UK) factory in 1970

Beautiful boat Josh. I also have a fiberglass hull with teak decks and lots of wood trim except it is a 38' trawler. I've been having a lot of luck refinishing with three coats of West system epoxy with 207 UV hardener, followed by three coats of Epiphanes varnish. I apply the three coats of epoxy back-to-back without sanding, when the epoxy is tacky. The end result looks like 12 coats of varnish and so far is holding up very well in sunny Marina del Rey. Good luck with her. I am the author of myself!

When I first started just "window shopping" for my first sailboat, I was totally smitten with a '70s Cheoy Lee 42' Luders-designed clipper-rigged ketch rather similar to yours. Of course it was absolutely the WRONG boat for me, but I totally get it. Hell, if you weren't three time zones away, I might pitch in to help refinish that teak. By now you've likely learned that many owners just strip that teak decking if it's too far gone, but yours still looks salvageable, and you might get away with a proper recaulking. Carry on!

For anyone desring to refurbish a classic this one is in fair condition and the perkins is a very solid engine! The Classic's are amazing to look at, yet I not the condition of the teek and the bullworks, all exterior wood is in need of full restoration! and I already have $$$$$$$ signs and many hours of labor! The sails are far gone and need replacing! Wenches need attention and the troubles with the classic deck/sail mechanisms is finding the parts to recondition them!

Congratulations - best choice - I Iove to see like minded fellow boaters. After all your comparison with "Giraffe", there is the biggest difference to your Cheoy Lee yet to be discovered, once you are ready to sail her. You will find a BIG difference, and your present boat has tenfold the sailing characteristics and capabilities compared with today's short keel, spade rudder affairs. P.S.: I have a 1965, 30 ft Cheoy Lee ketch, still in the reno phase, of course.

Small world. Owned an Offshore 27 in the early 80's and met up and sailed a number of times with the prior owner of your boat. He brought it back up from what it looks like now and put new decks on it. You know you are on a CL because they all have the same smell. I miss that smell. You are going to love sailing her. We call them MOB boats (mostly underwater) and she will plow through about anything and very forgiving. Owners have come and gone, but amazing how many boats stay close in SoCal.

Those boats need a lot of maintenance. Keeping the wood up, the mast. My dad had a 1970 Cheoy Lee 33, and it was a lot of work. That mast has probably been replaced - the original should have also been wood.

Growing up on Cape Cod, I am partial to old Catboats, ( gaff rigging ), with my first being a beetlecat with cotton sails .The amount of work every year, calking the hull, filling, priming, sanding, then painting. Then topside where deck is canvas and alllll is wood. Work work work. You got a beauty. My father would never allow our boats to fall in disrepair. Captain he was. Fair winds sir. No engines on my boats, just centerboards , rudders and tillers.

Great to find someone willing to restore a classic wood boat. My hubby & I have owned 2 wood boats ( 2nd one was a 34' Franz Maas yawl - teak hull, teak decks, mahogany cabin). Then (for more self punishment) we got a Swedish Ohlson 41 (steel hull, teak cockpit, mahogany cabin & interiors). We believe that traditional oil based, quality varnishes are best for the wood. even teak; get 6 coats on & then make or buy a awning cover to keep the UV sun off. Re-coat with 1 or 2 coats every 6 months. For our solid teak cockpit seats, we use Semco - it's a type of oil - it worked really well for the year we spent in Mex & So Cal. I think it would be hard to use on your decks because you are not supposed to get it on the caulking. Generally teak decks should be kept clean but just with water, many cleaners are too harsh & erode the softer grain of the wood. Tropical sun ruins the teak decks on lots of FG boats, so awning are a must! We totally re-caulked the decks on our Maas yawl; it's a real hard job removing the old caulking. Our decks leaked like a shower! Good luck

Reminds me of Dad's old yacht, an Abeking and Rasmussen 10 meter. He sold it in '86. I always wondered what happened to it and did a google search on it a couple of years ago. To my surprise, there it was, fully restored and it was for sale. I live a long way from the closest mooring these days but I decided to give the owner a call and have a chat. I was on the 'phone to him for over an hour. He'd done the restoration as soon as he bought it and had been living aboard for nearly 30 years and had kept the boat in immaculate condition. Despite the geographical challenge (3hr. round trip), I still wonder if I made a mistake in not writing a check. I hope that you can achieve what that fellow did and I hope you can make his son envious too, in another 30 years.

Aloha Josh, Nice find! I purchased a Choey lee Pedrick 36 six years ago on Oahu. I had to re-engine due to a cracked block on a universal 32. Now she has a new Yanmar 53hp. @Renegade Show Isn't this where you go on about how your 1966 Spencer 44 was designed around the IOR (International Offshore Rule) race guidelines, even though these same guidelines weren't developed until *1970* by the ITC (International Technical Committee)? You've stated this fallacy numerous times about your Spencer. All I can conclude, is that John Brandlmayr (the Spencer 44 Designer) must have had a time machine. Perhaps you could return here and enlighten all of us? And if you don't, I'll just consider it another delusion of yours.
