Keep in mind, Townshend had his Deluxe models modded with two extra switches by the volume and tone controls and a full size Humbucker ( maybe a Super Distortion) in the middle of the mini humbuckers….and used at least a 13 gauge set, to stand up to his rough and ready playing style. (Also, the tone on the records are not always the Gibson’s! He still has and uses the Gretsch that Joe Walsh gave him, although it’s been repaired after “having a little accident”.)

That one inlay could have partially come loose on the sides which caused it to shrink. Same goes for celluloid pickguards if you take it off, it will shrink and the screw holes will move. That's why I always screw them to a MDF board when I remove them for a longer period. Just leaving them sitting can warp them bad and it happens faster than you might think.

Back in 1986 I bought a ‘69 Deluxe for $300 (plus tax). They had added a TP-6 bridge and Schaller tuners. Even back then it had the arm wear to a funky patina. They inlays on the neck were melted from being too long on the neck warmer, according to the shop I bought it from. I added strap locks. Absolutely hated the mini hum buckets. I took it back a few months later and swapped it (even trade!) for an ‘85 V. They couldn’t sell it. The V is black with an ebony fretboard. Still have it, and it still sounds amazing!

Coming in late here. Yes, the MOP Gibson inlay was actually a ghost outline block and the lettering was silkscreened so showing later years with wear and tear paint/overcoat chipping off and leaving just the block inlay exposed. I think Gibson started this mfg method middle 69 or so. As opposed to the actual inlay lettering stamped into the headstock face.

That guitar is in exceptional condition, for a 1969 Gibson lacquer finish guitar. not that they had other finishes. finish checking is minimal which is amazing in itself. for a 55 year old guitar it's in more fantastic condition. than any other guitar by Gibson or anyone else for that matter. I guess you can be a little more picky. but for me that would be an ultimate impossible find. and it's true that guitar isn't a guitar a person would want to play as much. but maybe that's a good thing because that guitar. needs to stay in the condition it's currently in. it's a virtual time capsule.

I used to use a little WD 40 on my old guitars. At some point I started using graphite because it lubricates well with little or no mess. I'd try maybe taking the tuners off if you can't lubricate them on the guitar and then clean off excess . Possibly soaking them in a light oil or WD 40 then let dry. When you do learn some who you have got to learn something you can helicopter strum with like d Don't Get Fooled Again.

Trogly, to your knowledge was there ever a 68 edition or perhaps a crossover 68/69 on the Goldtop Deluxe? Reason i am enquiring is that according to the serial number on mine it dates to early 69 late 68. The mini's are much more deeply set and the pickups feature an extra, white/cream surround which looks factory in my limited knowledge. My guitar has certainly been played and the gold paint has faded severely in areas. It has a volute neck and a pancake body. The mini's positively sing, I have a Leo's Sunburst Les Paul which i have dated to 1985 and my Deluxe shits all over it for unique sound and playability. If you are interested enough to give me feedback, i will be happy to provide photos and a serial no. Thanks Trogly
