@chacazulo1987 Well, I changed my mind after more hours on the PS 5, I'm not going to take it back. But I'm going to put the PS4 pro in the closet, Lol 😂. Good backup console with a lot of the same games on it though.

@Tim C ps4 pro is good, i own one still. But ps5’s backward compatibility through digital has made me put away the ps4 pro, i still have it. But why use it when i can play everything in one console even ps4 games i can play on ps5. And it downloading faster than a ps5 is weird, my ps4 pro downloads games as fast as my ps5. To me it’s not that important. I want the better hardware. Silent, more powerful, loads games faster, ps5 is a beast.

I can't believe you didn't mention the DVD player in the PlayStation 2. It is undeniably the reason why it's sold so well. DVD players were really expensive at the time so you could get a game console and a DVD player for cheaper in some cases than just a DVD player. It was literally a game changer.

This is an old post but it's actually wrong. Ps2 was capping out at 100 million by 2006. What caused it to go to 150 million was third party countries having it sell there extra cheap for many years after the core crowd moved into ps3

They’re not that sealed. It’s a bit of click bait. They’re perfect packaged originals, but 100% you can carefully put it back and sell it for what you paid for it. The boxes didn’t have their original wrapping, only a protective plastic box.

Another great nostalgia trip. I'd love to see a video of every Sega console ever if you haven't done that already. I'd say a video of every PS handheld and Sega handheld would be cool too but all together there's only a handful between the 2. The Sega Nomad and Game Gear, and the PSP, PSP Go, and Vita. I think the PSP and Vita had iterations like the PSP 1000, 2000, and 3000. But I'm not sure of they were actually different handheld generations or just upgrades/improvements on bugs from the previous iterations.

Loving this type of content, I was expecting the Net Yaroze to make an appearance, but I was a bit gutted that it didn't. Hope you've got enough space for the increased screen size on the PS6. Based on the way you presented this, will it be about 120" display? 😉

Just got my ps5, and I have all of them besides the first playstation. They somehow find a way to kick it up a notch every single time. The ps4 amazed me when it released. I didn’t see any way they could improve, and still they did. The UI is one of my favorite upgrades from the ps4. It’s so sleek and perfect. It feels like something straight out of the future. The ps2 is still my favorite and I still play on it today, but it’s crazy how well the 5 outperforms all of them. I wonder how they will improve it with the ps6, but I know they will find a way because Sony always does.

@Chris rocks that is because of cross gen. I remember I had a gtx 750ti. I could max out AC black flag, but when AC unity came out, I could not go higher than low settings, and voila the graphics were so much better. Literally, every developer has said the last gen us holding the games. But also, we have to take into consideration that 9th gen consoles are trying their best to target and standardize 4k/60fps, and that require x8 times more processing power. Which only a little processing power remains for improvement. But with that said, when last gen goes out, the windows and current consoles can run games only on low quality. Only then we can feel the leap

@Masoud Fasihi total lies because I’m playing both , definitely ps5 is more better than 4 of course yes no doubt but not in the manner people are making it to look like , ps3 can’t be compared with ps4 but ps4 is being compared with ps5 that’s to show you that ps4 still got some capabilities okay dude

My dad had a PS2 when he was 15 and he still has it, its in our basement and still works. The games we have on it are Sonic, GTA, ATV's VS Moterbikes (or something like that) and many other games of the time. I remember playing ATV's VS Moterbikes on the PS2 with my sister. The PS2 was both my dads childhood and mine.

The last console I ever had was PS2 and I loved it. I played on it for years. One point you missed in the video is that games made for PS1 could also be played on PS2. When the PS3 came out, I heard you couldn't play games from previous consoles on it, so I wasn't interested because I didn't want to give up the games I loved playing, plus I didn't want to spend so much money on a new console and have to buy all new games. I've grown out of gaming consoles now, but I still have fond memories of the PS2 and consider it the best one ever made, just my opinion.

This was a really fun video but there was definitely a few bits that were wrong or perhaps just attributed at the wrong time release/history wise, I'd have to go back and watch again to pick them out to go further in depth on it, but it was things like Controller/System Features, Resolution, Various Technical Effects etc. that were mentioned say at the start of the following Console when it was actually done (if not somewhat standardized) on the previous one 🤔

The ps2 (slim) was my childhood. Ours was super dodgy tho. We have a rock that sits on the cables in a specific position coz otherwise the power would unplug itself. And every time you put a disc in and turned it on, there was a 50-50 chance that it would just end up on that glowy orb circle screen (idk the name lol). When it did actually boot up properly, my brother and i would cheer coz it was really variable lol.

Our PS2 Slim wouldn't load up one of our Rock Band or Guitar Hero games (I can't remember which one). Got an older, refurbished PS2 Fat from GameStop a short time later since one of the control ports went out on the Slim. It had no problems whatsoever with _any_ of the games in our collection. It was just a much better system in my opinion.

The X and O buttons being "Yes" and "No" was actually swapped for many games back then, with O being Confirm and X being the Back button. The Sega Dreamcast came out before the PS2 and also had an ethernet port for online play and features. You also had the PS2 on some kind of widescreen plasma or LCD/LED display. Most of us were still running 4:3 CRTs with that system. I used a CRT until halfway through my Xbox 360's lifecycle. Microsoft also backpedaled a LOT on those restrictions for the Xbox One era. Personally, I dislike the look of the PS5. It's weird for no reason, but the Xbox Series X just looks elegantly utilitarian, which I love. None of those weird curved fins sticking out.

The PS4 Pro was the very first console that I got and it was already capable of 4k 30fps, some games 60fps, it would've been interesting to highlight how much graphics power is on the PS5 has improved as it's capable of more than 60fps now. It's just said that I still can't get a PS5 here in our country as it's still overpriced. Would Love to see more of this!

@Game Nation Both the PS4 Pro and the Xbox One X were Sonys and Microsofts first attempt to 4K gaming, the One X was doing better than the PS4 Pro back then. Both consoles were released around the same time where the first affordable 4K TVs were coming out wich were still over a thousand dollars (with affordable I mean that they were at least a thousand dollars while before 4K TVs costed about as much as 8K TVs today so they became much more affordable)

@Game Nation Yeah the PS4 Pro was a 4K ready console, not 4K capable wich means that it can output 4K however the games will be downscaled to about 1440p, same like the PS3 and Xbox 360 wich were HD ready consoles and not HD capable as they had 1080p output but was downscaled to 720p in games.

To this day, the PS1 is my favourite due to the feelings of nostalgia I have for it. But Sony really has crushed it, with hardly any failures. Even the PS3 wasn't a failure, despite losing that generation. The PSP was the same, and honestly it was never gonna touch the DS in sales, but it did do solid. Really it's just the PS Vita that failed. But the PS5's recent price increase here in Canada have had me deciding I won't buy new consoles for quite some time. 859.99... approximately 950 CAD. Absurd. Still, looks like a cool console.

Something you didn't mention about the PS3, the reason it launched with such a high price tag was they had physically integrated a PS2 inside of the system so it had the ability to play PS1, PS2, and PS3 games natively with hardware (not through software emulation) This allowed for full backwards compatibility for all of their titles but drastically increased the manufacturing costs As they released different Iterations of the Fat PS3 they slowly removed these features until it was strictly subpar software emulation People like to say they want backwards compatibility but if they really did they would have to pay for it, and history shows people don't want to pay for it...

@Ryan S No, while you are partially right you make some bad and inaccurate points. First the rsx didn't contribute as much as it was a late stage add on in response to devs who wanted something more traditional. It did add to the price dont get me wrong. The ps3 was never supposed to have a gpu. The Cell was supposed to be its all in one. Hence why games that utulized the cell effectively had much better games than games that relied on the rsx. And the Cell and blu-ray were indeed the primary causes of the high price the addition of the EE and GS also boosted the price quite a fair bit. Hence why the removal of these two things along with a few other changes dropped the price dramatically. The cost of building the ps3 was over 800 per unit. And yes the cell and blu-ray contributed much to that but so did the EE and GS from ps2 due to all the other materials and time put into making two systems in one work together nearly flawlessly. Not to mention all the materials it took to put them on the system. Also the ps2 had nothing to do with the overheating. The overheating was solved with the die shrinks.

Not the PS2 it was the Blu Ray tech inside the system and the memory card reader and the price of the Cell chip and RSX chip. Sony already had all the Emotion Engine chips that was not the pricey point. Later systems got rid of the PS2 because of over heating issues and the cooling system was redesigned.

@densetsu4286 Thanks for the in-depth explanation! I never got into buying blu-ray dvds, so I’ve never researched it. I only own a few, and I think my ex gave them to me lol. I knew that PS3s were sold at a loss, I just wasn’t aware of what could possibly make other blu-ray DVD players different.
  • densetsu4286

@Anti - Ethnic Cleansing because Sony took a lost for every ps3 sold. Stand alone manufacturers sold at for profit. That's one reason for the price difference. Secondly not all blu-ray players could preform firmware updates. Not all had access to the internet for extra features, not all support 3d blu-rays. Not all support dual layer disc's. Then you had th3 cpus inside them that handle the decodes of the codecs. Not all handle it that well. Ps3 had none of these issues plus it was the cheapest due to sony selling at a loss.

@densetsu4286 How the heck does one make a blu-ray player better or worse? Especially for hundreds or thousands of dollars difference in price range? I mean, it either plays a blu-ray disc, or it doesn’t.

Sony entering the market with their own system was actually due to a backstab from Nintendo. Sony intended to enter the market with the Nintendo Playstation, where Sony proveded the CD drive part of the system and create exclusive games for it. DEV kits were already available and some prototypes still exist. The project was basically finished when Nintendo pulled the plug, thinking cds were inferior to cartridges, and developed their side of the system into the Nintendo 64. Sony had put so much funds into already that they decided to also complete the system and compete with Nintendo with their disc based 3d game console. It is hard to say who won. Both created an entire own side of the gaming market that grew alongside eachother and coexist without either side losing sales when the other does well, or gains from it the other falters. There WAS a big loser though: Sega was completely pushed out of the market is just a decade, now reduced to a 2nd party dev studio for mainly Nintendo.

@Watagree well the peoppe who designed the PS5 are smart enough to chose materials that don't react and any reaction is goingnto be negligible to performance and the thermal solution doesn't deplete like a paste conpound. Regardless, the ps4 thermals weren't well designed at any stretch, so obviously it would show with age but the type of fan used also does impact the noise regardless of speed and again has been a consideration factored in. Needless to say, it's clear thermals have obviously been considered equally in performance this time. How much the system is pushed is undoubtedly an inevitability but will be serviceable for the lifetime of the system regardless so it's a non issue. Fyi: nanite in URE 5 has replaced LOD with no effect to performance so archic methods like that deployed in development will be replaced along with the rest of performance saving features baked into development tools. It seems to me like your stance is kinda stuck in last gen.

@[insert Name Here] well still depends on the developers and type of game. badly optimized games or open world games are still gonna tax the system and within 2-3 years i can see devs creating high demanding games that will make the system hog as much as the ps4 does now. tbh im not that big of fan of liquid metal. its going to oxidise at some point and its not that easy to replace like thermal paste is.

@Watagree And those components are by and large definitely more efficient than their counterparts from previous gens. Cooling is also significantly more thoughtful and not an afterthought so it's quite honestly a none issue as these types are faults are less likely than that of a mechanical issue - especially considering the CPU on a ps5 is coveted by a liquid metal, for example.

@Stratosphere The Series X was also hard to get at launch. But that was due to silicon shortages due to Covid. It affected gamers in many ways, including PC players trying to buy GPUs while they were in short supply yet also being bought up by crypto miners. But it also affected the price of cars, too, and home appliances. Anything with computer tech in them was priced up and harder to get due to Covid shortages.

At an aspect ratio of 16:9, 4K contains almost four times the number of pixels on a screen compared with 1080P technology - more than eight million pixels for 4K and just two million pixels for 1080P.

The one thing I question this console is that, if it's meant to be more why the storage space is still low and not a TB storage space in it? Also I have many questions about this as I been wanting to get one but always wondering will this be like the PS4 of not able to delete so you can free up space? Cause the one that I got before replacing it ((PS4 I mean)) had that problem of it not allowing me to free up space and would just not let me do anything on it. Also, will this be able to have external storage to be able to connect to it more easier? And how come some games that they bring out are only for the PS5 and not for PS4? Just wondering if you or anybody can answer that as I'm just so loss of this, specifically cause of the new game Dad Space Remake came out and I don't have the console to play it.

it's said that the PS2's startup screen towers represent how many game save files are on your memory card, and the height of each one is determined by how much time you put into that specific game.

6:25 it was also very expensive because it had a built in Blu-ray. Which wasn’t heard of at the time, xbox tried to compete with a third party hardware disc tray that was able to use HD DVD discs but that didn’t pan out too well lol. So if you compare ps3 with its built in Blu-ray, vs the Xbox with its third party hd dvd disc tray, it was actually pretty much the same price, except the ps3 was an all in one package lol

I heard as well that apparently an important part of what seemed to aid Sony with PS2 sales was the fact that it cost a very similar amount (or sometimes even less) than a DVD player whilst being able to play DVDs, so people were buying the console instead of the standalone DVD player.

That’s definitely the reason I bought a PS3(blu-ray). My reason for buying a PS2 was partially backwards compatibility of PS1 which I never bought(had a Sega Saturn) and DVD.

@Dean Does Mapping you give too little credit to how much better hardware has gotten. The thing is games are super scalable now and just run better on a wider variety of hardware. The difference is that rasterization is reaching a limit in fidelity plus the fact is that the effects are already really good. The PS4 is a huge leap over the PS3 in just about every way except for CPU. Games during the 7th generation were mostly baked effects meaning they were not running in real time. Yes the 7th generation was the first to establish most of the real time effects we see in the 8th generation and onward but they were often used sparsely or were not combined in use. The 8th generation changed this by not only being able to use all of these effects at once but also being a lot do it at much high resolutions and levels of accuracy. The PS4 is a bigger jump from the PS3 than what most people give it credit for

Strangely enough, if you had the right cables, GT4 on the PS2 could run at 1080i. Not 720p or 1080p, just 1080i. It didn’t look particularly great, but you could do it.

Previously had the PS1 and 2, those somehow got broken (PS2's optical drive tray dislodged and just wouldn't close at all). Still have the ps3, though, mostly sits unused. Found a wii, again, sits unused. I had the SNES before that got stolen. I have four NES consoles (one is monochrome, and it's not defective either or PAL). I seldom game due to an issue called Gamer's Itch - A form of anxiety (where you start itching all over the place at random, and it never stops, only gets worse until you stop playing any game).

Some additional points: _PS2_ - Was also a functional DVD player. DVD players were still sort of new at that point, having come out a few years prior. So the fact that the PS2 could also play DVDs was a useful feature. It worked fine with a controller, but you could buy an optional remote accessory. _PS3 & PS4_ (since there is a lot of crossover points) - Mentioned the Blu-ray compatibility, but there actually was a lot of demand for the PS3 in the early days as a relatively cost-effective Blu-ray player (again, remote as an optional accessory) that could also double as a gaming console. It was a better deal than some of the cheaper early BD players that lacked some key features (I think internet features was a big one, internal storage was another, as that was used for some BD Live functionality). You touched on it with the PS4 bit, but it really was a bit of a nightmare to develop for, as I understand it. Because of this, a lot of games released on it performed worse than their X-Box 360 counterparts, in spite of the console being technically more capable. Skyrim was a notable example. That was pretty infamous for turning into a slideshow after some hours of play on a given character. Also, being a bit pedantic, but the PS3 technically supported up to 1080p gaming. It's just most of the games weren't capable of it, or defaulted to lower resolutions for performance reasons, and I'm pretty sure a fair few games on the PS4 were also sub-1080p render resolution. You can turn on the PS3 with the controller. The console had to be in the standby mode, which was standard so long as the switch was set to on at the back of the console. One final point though: _"I bought every Playstation Ever."_ *PSP and PSV cry in the corner* Those were pretty impressive little machines that blasted their competition (DS/3DS) out of their water both graphically and in terms of sound and just plain looked more premium. How good the games were was of course up to the developers, and the DS/3DS both had dual screens as features, and the 3DS had the 3D functionality (that a lot of people didn't use anyway). Pretty sure the original PSP is still well appreciated for its use as a portable emulation console to this day, even if Sony did do their best to make it much harder than they needed to for people to use it that way. And that's discounting spinoffs, like the PS Go, and PSX (Which was a DVR & PS2 combo device) but let's not get carried away.

@JoshJLMG Productions technically that and the PS4 could do it. However high frame rate displays were not at all common during the mid to late 2000s. High frame rate displays didn’t really become popular til the early 2010 and even then they were only in PC monitors. This is why games never went past it. TVs were locked to 50/60hz during this time mostly as a hangover from the early analog days of TV sets with CRTs. Most TVs stick to 60hz because it was the long established standard for how often the image would update. So once the PS4 came out they could have easily updated it to support 120hz but they never did even though hdmi 1.4 could do 1080p 120hz. Now that more TVs are coming out with proper high frame rate support, the console developers are now realizing the benefits of high frame rates and allowing the consoles to output it. Technically even the Dreamcast could of done high frame rates using its VGA connection to a CRT monitor since PC CRTs weren’t locked to 60hz unlike their TV counter parts. However not all PC monitors had the same capabilities so trying to get 90 or even up to 160hz at 480p would highly variable based on how old and how high end your CRT monitor was

There's a HUGE point which was missed in this video and this previous post about the PS2 being a DVD player: this is the price point. A common strategy in the console industry is for companies to take a hit on consoles and make it back-up with consumers over their lifetime via software sale. However, in the companies making movies (aka software) were not in the hardware industry (aka hardware.) This positioned the PS2 as anywhere from 30%~60% cheaper than all the name brand electronics company's stand-alone DVD players. If you were an adult at that time in the market for a new entertainment setup... a lot of sales people would sell you on an expensive TV (as the markup and therefore commission was huge for them) and then recommend the PS2 as a "extremely affortable DVD player with optional remote purchase". I was witness to this a lot in electronic shops during the timeframe. Owning a PS2 close to launch meant you were an EARLY adopter for DVD's. This repeated again with the PS3. With the Blu-Ray player functionality, it meant that more people on average owned a Blu-Ray player instead of the rival medium of HD-DVD (a format which lost that war solely citing the PS3 as the reason for that loss.)

My first time seeing your videos. Really cool look at the history and evolution 😀 😎 have noticed some minor details in your reviews. Sony took the design of their controller from the SNES and added grips and two more shoulders. Also the analogue sticks came to the ps1 before the 2. The ps2 was not the first on-line console that was the dreamcast right out the box, but was at least a DVD The PS3 was also the cheapest Blu Ray and SACD player on the market taking a $200 loss per device and gave u the savings. Oh.... and you can turn on the ps3 via the controller before ps4. Please don't think of these as mean. Your commitment to production is impeccable and clearly to be justified with a like. Just feel the facts are fraction under the high standards you've set yourself. But really enjoyed. Maybe a follow-up deep dive looking at these details in the future 🤔 SACD for example

I bought my brother a PS3 when it first came out. I bought him uncharted and if memory serves it was the 160gb hard drive and it was bundled with Guitar Hero World Tour if I remember right. He was geeked from the start. I remember him saying out the motion control worked with Uncharted and how when Drakes pants got wet they actually looked wet. I know that doesn't sound like a lot now but back then that was a big deal. I'll never forget his initial reaction to the system..... it was priceless. Anyways.... seeing this guy talk about it now from over 15 years ago when this piece of hardware first came out just kinda brought back a memory or two is all. Take care now....

@AniMason Couldn't ask my parents because I knew they will never spend the money. Got my Atari 2600 from my cousin when it got old and boring for him. To him it was old trash, to me it was a treasure. Then I managed to get my rich uncle to get me a NES, I was his favorite nephew so I used it to my advantage. I had a friend and a cousin with SNES. No need to say that I became I frequent visitor in their houses until I got a used one for cheap with a few games. The only one my parents actually were convinced to buy due to finding it very cheap. I bought my PS1 with my own money that saved very meticulously since I was a teen and could make some money here or there. PS2 was easy to get. Since I was now working and making money. Which is also why I have plenty of games for it since it was the first time I wasn't struggling to get games.

Tomp Raider also. GTA was something I ignored on PS1, I was playing the Driver games. But played GTA and Driver Nada Gateway games on PS2. Also I was maybe from the few that loved the Killzone game on PS2. I thought it was great. I am not a massive first person shooter guy but I played that a lot. F1 games was also what I loved on both consoles and of course Final Fantasy games. So many games and memories, is hard to mention all.

Don't unnecessarily watch DVD's on the PS2, you're just wearing out the optical drive. Watching movies on the PS2 is well known to break it, because with movies you're constantly reading the disc as opposed to only occasionally like with games, which will cause a lot more wear and tear a lot faster.
