Your story about your first fast bike reminds me of mine on a brand spanking new '87 Honda Hurricane 600 that belonged to the mechanic I took my car to as a kid. I was admiring the bike and he said, "You know how to ride?" I said I did, failing to mention that the biggest, fastest bike I'd ever ridden at that point was my uncles '70's something 250XR. Mechanic says, "Here, take it out and open it up." Yeah, he did, I kid you not. That was 30 plus years ago, the place was called "Master Tune" in Gallup, NM. I can still see the bike in my mind... yes, those first fast rides stick with you! I'd like to say I took it out and ripped up 66 on it (Highway 66 runs through Gallup), but I'd be lying. I got out on the road, slipped it into second and gently twisted the throttle and had my teeth pulled to the back of my throat. I idled the bike in second back to his shop and thanked him. He laughed and said, "Yeah, I'm scared of it too!"

Not a single person I know of opens a barn and proclaims weak valve springs will keep a graveyard vehicle down. It might float valves, it might miss, but it will run so send it if it's doomed to die.
@davelowets
2 жыл бұрын
@@spacecadet0 Do you completely understand what can happen to a high-performance engine such as this, if it has weak valve springs? It can do MUCH more than just "miss" or "float valves". With the valve lift that this engine certainly has, the valves are awfully close to the pistons. With weak springs, the valves can EASILY kiss the pistons if the springs can no longer control them properly, ESPECIALLY at the RPMs that thes race engines operate at. That would instantly destroy the engine. With a normal "economy" or lower power OEM engine the much lower valve lift, lower engine speeds, and the engineers designing in more room for safety, a weak valve spring isn't a huge issue. But in an engine like this, it most CERTAINLY IS. 4 valve springs for a 2 cylinder is inexpensive, and there's NO reason NOT to do it.

@@bdr7557 I used to think that also, but then I found out first hand that they DO... My drag race big-block has a roller cam with close to .750 lift and valve springs with 850lbs of open pressure. I used to put it away for the winter without touching the valvetrain at all. One year when I pulled the car out of storage for the season, I noticed a head gasket leaking. I pulled the heads off to repair it, and figured I would give them a quick once over as long as they were off the motor. As I was checking the valve springs for tension, I noticed that they were all fairly close except for a few of them that were pretty far out of spec compared to the rest of them, I'm talking like by 50+lbs. I went back and looked at the position of the lifters in the short block as I hadn't rotated it since I removed the heads, and sure enough, every valve spring that was down on pounds lined up with every lifter that was up on the cam lobes. I now pull the rocker arms off when I put the car away for the winter, they are shaft rockers and I can take them on and off without even having to re-lash them. Takes less than 30 minutes to do, and is worth it.

And something you missed knowing/saying about the Destroyers is, there was a Destroyers only class in an all Harleys Drag racing series back then (I rode a mid-7 second Methanol Turbo HD that was only 103CID at those events) and one of the strictest rules in the Destroyer Class was you weren't allowed to modify the engine "to make more power" E.g. they always had a dyno at those events to check/confirm your Destroyer wasn't making more power...

Yup my buddy had 3 at one time and then bought the Bonneville vrod that Harley had and we went to the salt and he was able to set a new record. In the altered engine form the bottom end bearings wouldn’t last more than a few minutes, the crankcase would flex enough that the bearings would self destruct and often spin. After his first pass on the flats the oil looked like gold metalflake paint. Put in the spare engine and pulled tuning out of it to set record.
@davelowets
2 жыл бұрын
Yep. High-powered engines with factory crankcases tend to do this. I'm into drag racing Oldsmobiles and with a factory block, every time I would get over 600-650 h.p. out of one, the main bearings would end up wasted in no time. The OEM blocks just weren't strong enough and would flex, pinching the bearings against the crank. I stepped up to an aftermarket 4-bolt block with MUCH beefier main bearing saddles and webs, and a Billet crank, and now I have no more bottom end issues at over 700h.p. and 7000+ RPMs.

I road a few stock v rods but I owned a sportster custom that seemed pretty quick. It was small but ran great.

Throw some new valve springs in it and ride it. Valve springs can easily be made to your specs these days, so it shouldn't be that difficult to get some made if they don't already have some in stock. It's worthless if you cannot ride it IMO. I bet you could find someone to inspect it so you could license it too...

I'm surprised G-SUIT style has not made it to MC pants, as you can have a full lower body massage as you ride, with heat or A/C, so eliminating the need for "lowers" on touring bikes, and providing extra comfort for adventure bike riding.

How do you know the valve springs are bad? Compression of a spring over any period of time does not cause the spring to lose strength or integrity

At our local track there was a guy who bought one when they were new and raced it. Think they ended up with 3 of them at one point. They are so cool to watch run. But I believe it was mostly a low 10 second bike. We have bad air.

You know if Harley wanted to become popular with the younger generations, what they should do is big engine big power supercharged bike. Take one out of the Mopar playbook. They should produce the largest V Twin and make it with the most HP ever done in a v twin mass production bike.

I question the valve spring thing he's talking about. Conventional knowledge is that springs wear from use not from being stored compressed.
