Here are the numbers, forgot to make a table for the video: Force Test iPhone 11 - 352 N iPhone 12 - 443N To press down the extra ~100-ish N's on the iPhone 12 took quite a bit of effort. Based on this value, the iPhone's screen is tougher than most screen protectors I've used. Scratch Test -The iPhone 12 had better scratch resistance on the front by a bit. My #7 pick didn't leave the same scratches as the iPhone 11 -Back scratch resistance is the same as the 11 -Camera Len's are the same (both scratched with my #8 pick)

despite toughness for scratches etc, would a screen protector take some of that force away from the screen on impact? So a drop eg onto a pointed surface for max force that may have broken the screen would have some of it absorbed by the protector and keep the screen unbroken? That + scratch protection is my main reason for using one. And on the 12, full cover protectors are pretty nice and almost invisible

Your comments say no, but I would say yes. From normal human hights this phone and most others won't break, IF the force is evenly distributed. But how often do you walk on a seamless concrete or glass surface to drop your phone on? Its not the hight most of the time that kills a screen, its the small, very hard stones on it. If there is a small, sharp rock in the way of your dropping phone in the wrong angle, it kills your phone even after a few centimeters, almost no matter what kind of screen you are using. Is a two phone comparison really representative? Not really, but if this test would produce similar forces on a scale of like 500 phones, it would help to affirm those clames of apple/corning/etc.. But with all glass, its just luck if you drop it and its survives. So no matter, a case and screen protector are the way to go, if you are at risk to drop your phone. One time or many times if you are clumsy.

so there's no point in having a case anymore other than for grip and to accessorise but other than that the iphone 12 is indestructible in terms of everyday usage from short falls from a desk, seated or standing and from chucking your phone in your bag/pocket which may be next to your door keys. I used my iPhone 4S up until 2018 from after years of abuse the screen cracked but only because I dropped it in the toilet and the curved ceramic was able to damage the screen because all other times my 4S was dropped on a flat surface. I then moved to Huawei P Smart the original model that came out the year prior in 2017 for £100 which was as good or better than the flagship iPhone X at around the same time in terms of specs. The iPhone 12 Pro Max that I've upgraded to now since my 4S got destroyed was the perfect way for an upgrade. I hated the look of the curved iPhones. The 4S design is the ultimate aesthetic design of a smartphone ever. I hope they keep this design for the next few generations as I can see they'll keep this design for their premium models.

@DerpyDoge the toughest the glass is the easier it is to crack under impact force, like dropping the phone. The scratching resistance is cool but will make people not use screen protectors and the glass will be way more vulnerable to cracking when dropped, apple now programs each display to the main board if replaced elsewhere outside apple a warning will always will pop up even if the display is original, making apple a lot of profit as these display are very expensive. They downsized the battery, removed the charger and headphones all just to save productions cost, they included in the box lightning to USB C cable, almost no one has USB C charger laying around this is just to force the user to buy a separate USB C power adapter or USB A cord. The ArmorSuit screen protector is a wet-apply flexible thin piece of TPU and it absorbs every bit of impact. It is scratch resistant and has a lovely grippy texture. I’ve never needed to replace it. 3 жыл бұрын
The force required to break was very cool. Everything else JRE did better. When using picks just a hair harder than the thing you are scratching (levels 6 & 7), you need to press hard in order to make the scratches visible. Otherwise the method is pointless for testing hardness. The 6 & 7 picks did scratch every surface on the iPhone but the scratches were so small you would've needed a microscope to see them. Press harder and the scratches become visible to the naked eye. A small diamond sliding on the screen won't meaningfully scratch it but apply some pressure and you will see the scratches.
@TheBasti05

I own a ROG Phone 3 16GB. I use it as my work and main phone. The glass isnt much tougher than the old iphone either. I use screenprotectors to not get it scratched up. in case the protector breaks (i break like 18 a year, work related, had multiple phones obviously) the screen is well most of the time. screen protectors do help a lot imo (ik i am not allowed to have an opinion on the internet)

My thing tho is why didn’t they put the same glass on the back? Just don’t make sense…yeah it’s kool to know ya screen hard to break but if they eventually do it to the back it’ll almost eliminate needing a case..I just got a 12 and carry mines without one, I just love how it feels in hand,definitely gotta be careful it’s a slippery device, meaning it’ll fall out of pockets much easier. Ima eventually get a case because once it’s broke you immediately loose more than half the phones value.. nobody wants to buy a cracked phone for top dollar.. plus I do plan on keeping this phone for the next 3+yrs unless I give it to my oldest daughter, she still use the 8

Next time, please, do a scratch test before screen cracking test.
@MemelordSupreme
3 жыл бұрын
Theoretically the scratches could hinder the crack test. Glass is more brittle when the structure is disrupted by scratches so if he scratches it prior to the crack test it could cause it to crack at a much lower resistance than if it was a fresh blemish free screen.

You called the iPhone 11 the iPhone and the iPhone 12 the iPhone 11 at about 3:40 it bothers me more than it should. But thank you for giving us actual empirical data idk if someone can shoot it with a paintball gun. You gave me actual actionable intelligence and I love that. If you compared 12 to 12 pro in the same manner I would appreciate that. And even more so if you could compare the note and the pixel

Unfortunately that probably wouldn’t return an accurate break test, scratches on any kind of tempered glass compromise the structure of the whole panel because of the way it’s strengthened.

i don't think the ceramic coating was ever meant to make the iphone 'tougher'. ceramics are inherently brittle. it is there to provide scratch resistance. it is the improved gorilla glass underneath that provide the durability.

The screen scratches at a level 6 and deeper grooves at a level 7, glass is glass. There is not really any more toughness on the screen for than the iphone 11 for moes toughness, your breaking the screen has cause some differences on the tension of the glass compared if it was a solid piece

No scratching it firsts will actually affect the surface tension and affects structural resistance, but breaking it will do nothing to change the scratch-resistance as it affects the molecular bond on the surface of the glass. Let's not forget there are coatings above the glass such as oleophobic coatings and anti-glare enhancements. It's like smashing a cake doesn't affect the surface of the smaller pieces of fondant all over the table. But scratching the fondant firsts will expose and weaken the cake and it will probably explode in a different way compared to a fully-wrapped cake. Of course, imagine the cake being 0.4mm thick and that scratch on the fondant will definitely affect the structure of the ceramic-crystaline structure.

Quick disclaimer, being really honest and not in any way am I meaning to be disrespectful. Really unprofessionally made video, the important results were neither really shown in good light conditions nor did you talk about the effect of your tools on some materials. It was kinda like YOU saw it and done, doesn´t that completely miss the point of the video? Also, mistakes happen but when you testet the Hardness 6 when it was actually 9, where is the concentration when doing these tasks and what is that order of the Tests? Wouldnt it be better to first test scratch resistance for visibility of the results and then shatter the whole screen?
