You know sometimes you got to be thankful that there is cheap stuff. Could you imagine if there was grade 8 bolts or better hold that jack in place …. I just went through that with my neighbor. He hated the ideal every time he hit something with his brush hog it would sheer the driveshaft bolt. And I could here him complain about how much that was costing him ( $5.25 ) and he bought himself a better bolt ( grade 8 ) $7.34 ……… Now he just bought himself a new drive shaft yoke ( $136.87 ) 😂😂😂 Glad it didn’t do anything damage to your mill.

I heard a story where a man replaced his PTO shear pin with a long bolt. One day, when he was late coming home, they found him wrapped around the PTO shaft with the tractor still running. In the end, he didn't save any money since his funeral cost more than the shear bolt.

So, Dave what grade shear-bolts do you recommend for out-riggers?

Two part answer; 1. Shut up Andy 2. Grade "hardware store" AKA cheap and dirty

Perhaps the sawmill designer anticipated an old man with a saw would forget to raise the outrigger and purposely selected these bolts that act as a fuse so as to not damage the saw frame……just a thought..😉

That would be an insult................BUT............I just loaded the mill for a road trip and found that SOMEBODY left the same foot down .....AGAIN. Sometimes an insult is just the truth you don't want to admit. I'll admit it though............I forget a lot.

Manufacturers want your stuff to fail. That's what you get when you buy something on the cheap. You get what you pay for!

Nothing but the mill owner failed here. The "cheap" blots are supposed to fail before something REALLY BAD (and $$$$$) happens. If you saw the LT40 up close you'd see how well made it is. Dave

So the Question would be do the "cheap bolts" hold up to the max weight and force that mill is spec'd to handle? While something are to weak to handle what they should other are designed that way in a good way or in this case probably just work out that way. If you beef up one thing sometimes you have to beef up other things. The weakest link isn't always a bad thing.

In this case WM did it right. The support has a large square steel bar welded onto it that the mill frame rests on. The bolts just need to keep the support from falling off the mill since all the weight is on the bar.

Hopefully your bolts sheared of before real damage was done too. If I was 20-30 years younger, I'd be embarrassed by this incident but now it's kind of funny (since it didn't cost much to fix) Don't you just LOVE your Wood-Mizer mill? Dave
