If you get foxes…lock your chickens in manually, you may come out in the morning to find a fox trapped inside and feathers everywhere(happened to my aunties that had this type of door)

Lol, cannot wait to see what your chaotic dinosaur birds *actually* do with that. Mine 1. can't figure out a peck waterer 2. Hide their eggs literally anywhere but the nesting box, and 3. Will sleep under the roosting bars. But hot damn it's beautiful.

I don’t think “winter” was the weather concern in this design. We live in S. Dakota & for us this coop is opposite to our climate needs. We build passive solar heated coops with automatic door & an attached greenhouse veranda. It’s all about one’s climate threats… hurricanes? Heat? Haboobs? Blizzards? Below -40 nights? Carolina Coops says they have never had a customer report a predator making it into the coop. There is a 24” perimeter of hardware cloth stapled into the ground on the outside of the coop and the hardware cloth used for the windows and run are attached using a pneumatic driver.

That’s the biggest problem we face in harvesting rain water. Gotta have a really good filter if the water is going to be potable. Otherwise it’s only use is watering plants. That’s for human consumption though, I don’t know if most animals need the level of cleanliness like humans do with their water.

Thats awesome. Good job. Just one thing. Our chicken coop nest boxes r the same as the ones u build. The chickens tend to ruin the eggs some times. Ive been looking into ways to build the roll away system so when they lay the eggs r out of there reach. Hope ur chickens r better behaved then mine.

I've always said a door that opens and closes automatically with the sun would save so much hassle with chickens. I had a client who walked with difficulty. She'd let the chickens out normally after breakfast, but during the day she'd set up a long rope fron the chicken door to her back veranda (porch) so she could just go out the back door and pull the rope to put the chickens away at dusk.

Big issue with the rainwater being used for your chickens to drink is the fact that wild birds poop on the roof of your chicken coop, and in turn you birds are ingesting that.

So cool! Happy for you! LOVE the waterers! You might just want to get that rope off the roosts, though...You cannot clean that...& chicken poo...it's wet & pops out 24/7...even while roosting at night! Hope you have no problems with your little buddies & have lots & lots of eggs!

He paid extra for the rope. Roped roosts are actually better than smooth ones. When the chickens are roosting most of their poop falls to the bedding below, not on the ropes.

Awesome. Only change I'd make: Don't use rope on those roost bars, just plain, smooth wood. It may look and feel nice at first but every crevice on those roost bars can and will be used by chicken mites to hide in.

@@kathywright7774 yeah, also a good idea to put it in the dust bath and mosquito dunks in the water tank. idk why people are putting pumps and pipes out of that. It's not necessary. Just put the nipple right in the tank and put a floating heater in it when it gets cold.

That is an epic coop! I was hoping you would get chickens! I would use the automatic door manually until they are well adjusted to getting all the way inside. If your door doesn’t have a sensor, it could crush them. If you want to be extra, get a camera or two for the coop to make sure they’re clear of the door before you close it. And predator proof the perimeter of it with some buried hardware cloth. Hope you enjoy them! Chickens are the best! Eggs and fertilizer!

There is a sensor, no crushed chickens. The tour was done before the 24” (.5”x.5”) hardware cloth was laid down and pneumatically stapled to the ground.
