F-4 Phantom, proof that with enough power a brick can fly. I worked on these beasts from 66 to 68 at Davis Monthan in Tucson, AZ, good times.

That Phantom, 002 was being flown by a good friend of mine,. Dave Tanner was an RAF test pilot who did his test pilot training in the US, I think at Pax River. As part of his training he did a 6 month attachment to the Royal Navy. This was I think his first carrier landi g and was filmed by the BBC for a TV series. He went on to fly Tornadoes in Gulf War 1

As a veteran in the US Air Force stationed at Homestead Air Force Base from 71 to 74 and a proud member of 726 TCS we were part of a squadron of f4e phantoms that were on standby to deploy to Southeast Asia. With the de-escalation of the war because of the anti participation campaigns we've remained on standby until my discharge. There's nothing like videos as this to remind me of that aircraft that was so prominent to our defense at that time. Thanks to you for posting. God bless our servicemen .

The British re-engined the Phantom with the Rolls Royce Spey engine. This engine was larger and had less thrust but it was a British product. (The US did something similar when it bought Harriers, substuting some US-made system so it's pretty normal.) Anyway, the joke in the Fleet Air Arm was: What happens when you spay a Phantom? It gets fat and slow.

I grew up in Cocoa beach Fl., in the 60's and 70's, my Dad was an Engineer at Cape Canaveral. we lived just north of Patrick AFB (now SFB) and at the time had a squadron of F4 Phantom II's. Me and my buds used to ride our bikes down A1A and park right by the runway end and watch the Mighty F4's take off right over or heads. I had an F4 model hanging from my bedroom ceiling and was going to be a fighter pilot. I DQ'd on my first interview for jets as I found out I didn't have uncorrected 20-20 vision. So off to Engineering College (a recently retired Aerospace/Computer Engineer with America's largest defense contractor's Aero company.
