I completely agree with you Ray about the purpose about these videos and the positivity it brings to people. After all, that is the purpose of music. My question is, why record it in a way that is so obviously staged? I feel like it’ll be much more authentic and interesting if you recorded videos by showing us the behind the scenes, how you set up the meeting, the practice, pre-recording, perhaps even some bloopers, interaction with audiences when you encourage them to request songs, and then of course, the performance itself, where the live audience is genuinely impressed by the sudden appearance of a flash mob. In this way, you can still spread positivity and joy to all, but in a more authentic and fun way. Just my 2 cents. Love what you’re doing and continue spreading joy to all!

@thenameisseanhong I posted this in another comment. Pasting here now: How often are they genuinely kind to someone vs all the times they’ve dissed someone: Ray, Ben Lee, Vov Dylan, Lindsay Sterling, Andre Rieu, viola players, recorder players, Chloe Chua (in their 1st ever video reacting to her they said that people like Christian better and pointed out her going cross eyed..she was like 11), Alma Deutscher, I could go on and on. I believe Alma was hurt because I read that she tried to justify why she said “interesting” during the video and seemed embarrassed by becoming a meme. Way to go, 2 grown a$$ men, making fun of a little girl and humiliating her. I do like Brett and Eddy’s content, but I think they are not kind people in general. - I don’t think they’ll get cancelled, nor do I want that. I just wish they would consider other people’s feelings sometimes. Especially when it came to the two little girls, Chloe & Alma. Luckily for Chloe TwoSet simps over her now, but or Alma had tshirts made to poke fun at her and a video made at her expense all for clicks. Sorry for spelling/grammar mistakes. Typing from my phone.

I like musicians like Ray who strive to spread classical music to the broader public. I also recognize their effort making such videos, and I actually enjoyed many of them. However, I can't convince myself some of them are not mainly to bait clicks which I don't like. There are many other ways of making fun videos that bring classical to everyone, which I much more prefer. ^ I'm not talking about Ray's videos though, most of which I found fun. As a classical musician was playing harp outside for people at a church and was as asked by another musician a violinist if he could preform with me. It took a few minutes to decide on piece to play together, then just played the piece. It was fun and spontaneous, people loved it! Hope other musicians will feel comfortable with asking to play together with another musician in a public setting.

Hi Rob, firstly Hi ( love your videos)… I think the issue (and there seems to be many comments on this same video to say the same thing) is that the acting part is really a downer for an otherwise wonderful collaboration….. I see for example your funny videos where people spontaneously react to your violin playing, it would very less encouraging to know they are acting …… You would still be playing awesomely but a viewer definitely wouldn’t like to be fooled…. And I think Twoset in their crude honesty have expressed an opinion many other people shared, they do it through humor but there’s truth in there. And as Ray said it, which we totally believe, they got many things wrong but not due to them being intentionally disingenuous but because of lack of context.

Hey Rob. I love your videos and keep up the good work! However that being said, Twoset was not trying to stop people from making this kind of content but rather just shedding light on the fact that it is staged and not genuine. Twoset’s whole thing is pointing out when people are being cringe or fake which is how they got this popular in the first place. They don’t sugarcoat it which is why I love them. They just say it as it is and that’s totally fine. I think we need both kinds of content creators. One that takes part in the show and one that calls out what needs to be called out. At the end of the day the content creators are clearly trying to portray it as “this is a random musician and totally genuine and not rehearsed at all” which is extremely cringe because everyone already knows it’s not real, so why are you trying to act like it is? Anyways what I’m trying to say is Twoset’s opinion is valid because all they did was give awareness to us(the audience).

I think the main issue is that the videos try to pass these events off as completely spontaneous, when obviously they aren't. I love seeing these collabs in public places, but a little honesty in the videos would be nice. "Hey, we set up a meeting to make some magic in public. Here's the result." It still gets the music out there, it's still awesome, you'll still have a crowd in the moment - but you won't be trying to pass it off as random strangers who just happened to bump into each other with their instruments.

I care about criticising clickbaits used in the classical music social media sphere as much as clickbaits used in the business & economics sphere, for instance. Clickbaits cheapen people's perception of what social media content is, and this is bad because it spits all over the face of many other creators who dedicate hours upon hours creating honest, substantive content and trying to elevate outsider's perception of what a social media content can be. Compare an hour long MBA-calibre study case of the American diner industry to a _"Top 10 7-Figure Business Ideas You Can Start From Home with No Prior Experience and No Capital"_ video. The former is clearly more educational, but the useless, clickbaity latter one has come to represent Business KZitem, which is bad. People now see Business KZitem as a mere marketplace for creators to shill their courses or affiliate links, not as a useful platform where you can actually learn about the numbers side of any particular industry. If left unchecked, I'm afraid the same thing happens to classical music KZitem/Tik Tok/etc.

I watch football content all the time with silly clickbait titles and thumbnails and advertising, but once I get to know a cc, if they're funny and the takes are interesting, I'll watch them, who cares. This is how content creators gain traction, and for some (Ray not included, since he has an actual job as a performing musician on top of this stuff) how they make money. I actually agree with Twoset on this one. There’s nothing wrong with playing music in public and bringing classical music to the masses. That’s awesome actually. But pretending everything is spontaneous and unscripted, when in fact it is, is cringeworthy. What’s wrong with the old “flash mob” style “play instrument in public” video? At least the audience knows from the get go that everything is well rehearsed and well prepared. Are the TikTok generation only entertained by miracle and coincidence, but no longer appreciate hard work and organization? I think Ray did not respond to the heart of Twoset’s critique, that is such video (not the actual performance in public itself) risks turning classical music into some sort of gimmicky. It’s along the lines of Twoset consistently critiques talent shows using classical music as a gimmicky. A typical trope is that a seemingly mundane, boring contestant, suddenly takes out a violin and nails the bumblebee. The implied message is that “classical music by itself is boring. It needs to be dramatized to be exciting.” Because if that was not the assumption, the contestant could have simply performed the bumblebee. Ray (or his collaborator) may have a very good response to this critique. He may have a good reason why short clips, captions, actors and narratives are a good way to promote classical music in this era. And that would be an interesting discussion. But just half answering “I did play my violin!” is not a real response.

It gives off the impression of doing a "necessary evil" (being staged) for the sake of a "greater good" (introduce classical music to a wider audience). It's great to be sharing classical music in a public setting, I'd be in the front row at the station enjoying it. That being said, I don't think there's a need to pretend that it was unplanned for clout. It does come off as disingenuous with all the acting of "bumping" into one another. Two musicians planning to meet up at a station and jamming together is just as entertaining. I think TwoSet's criticism was more surrounding the fact that musicians magically bumping into each other at a train station and whipping out an instrument in a minute to start playing with a stranger, is staged.

I think in this case what some people struggle with is the idea that the videos are misleading. A video might be presented in a way where the average viewer assumes it is not pre-planned, but to those with a little more background knowledge, you can tell that it has been. In that case there might be some resentment from either those who were "tricked" and later found out what wasn't real, or resentment from those "in the know" who might feel like the video is creating false expectations about the way musicians normally act.

Sorry, but this is just a giant straw man argument. The question of studio recording was a very small part of their overall video. The purpose of the video was to point out that these shorts all portray themselves as spontaneous performances, and that this is simply lying. We all understand that the audience is not paid, no one has claimed that. So if you really want to address the topic, answer this: why are you lying to your viewers, by creating (or participating in) these shorts in such a way that implies these meetings are not scripted?

I think the studio recording part is a legitimate issue he brushes over. He admits they had to "enhance" the recording. That's a really sus term because it doesn't just mean turn up the volume but full on post production sound editing, probably in Melodyne to remove the noise and who knows, correct a few rhythm or tuning issues? Now you can claim there was no autotune and sound correction but that's why the deception of the scripting and staging is problematic. If your argument is "we want to spread joy", why would you stop the deception there and not fake the quality of the sound too and enhance it digitally for KZitem?

The thing that bothers me most, everything is made black or white these days... How are all the colors forgotten? Is click baiting and "faking" bad? Even I'm not a fan of these "spontaneous" vids and some people might feel betrayed or offended, they will forget soon and live their daily lives... But if just a few of the thousands of viewers pick up an instrument, learn it and find joy for the rest of the life, then the click baiting can be a good thing that outweights the negative... So it's neither black nor white... People, people wake up and think for yourself and don't be color blind just because the rest of the world seems to be 🤗

The worst part was they said ray’s recording in studio and that’s defaming. You should never question a soloist’s performance like that without any solid evidence. Script is not a sin but bad performances are. TSV need to get enough practice before judging musicians who are trying to bring the joy of classic music to the mass. Their roast’s just so cringe. Hope they still remember their initial purpose of making a channel is to introduce classic music to young people instead of bullying others trying to do the same thing. That’s not a joke. If anyone says it is then that’s not funny.

0:54 "we did enhance it [the recording]". TwoSet did a video with producer Sean who showed just how much you could enhance a recording in Melodyne. If we're being fully transparent, I'd love to hear the original recording and the post enhanced recording because if we're happy to be slightly dishonest about the staging and the scripting then....

I believe the main critique is that the audience is being misled by the claim that the video is "one-hundred percent unscripted," while there are clear indications that it is actually scripted. If the videos were honest and stated that they were rehearsed with the intention of brightening random people's days, this would invalidate the entire point that TwoSet made.

Aww Ray is so nice, very positive!….I mean…he did say it’s fake, and on the video where he went to find the piano guy, he was like I’m going to see if this guy is real! And then it went to the clip…so he told us it was real…now he says it wasn’t..so like umm 🤔

This is where twoset gets trapped, they go for a very sarcastic and roasting approach, against people like Ray who are always nice about things, it does make them look bad and I agree they could not be so sarcastic, but in the end they were still right, these videos are staged yet Ray Chen original (in a previous video 5 months ago) made us think they were real.

Authenticity is a significant value in social media content, and misleading the audience can erode trust in the content creator. If the performance is staged, a caption like "This performance was planned and rehearsed by the musicians beforehand" can provide clarity without detracting from the enjoyment of the video.

Twoset isn’t saying the whole thing is fake. But the expectation that musicians come out of the mist to play with one another uninvited to do so is indeed a false expectation. It’s a silly gag and just say “hey we got together to perform in public for free” the pomp and circumstance create a full sense of expectation and the captions are cringe af
