Hi dog daddy, I’m a veterinarian and really enjoy your videos - I agree that positive feedback only training is not the gold standard. dogs are historically pack animals that learned behaviour through hierarchy and the dissuasive nips of their pack mates - it makes complete sense that corrective nudges from something like the prone collar or slip collars that you use, or the finger prod to the flank I see you use sometimes, is a language that the dog understands and responds to. (Of course combined with the verbal cues and your confident body language and consistency). Establishing a clear line of communication between pet and owner is crucial for the animals well-being and I’m glad there are trainers such as yourself doing such a fantastic job teaching that. Some people think this style of training is ‘mean’ - it’s not. It doesn’t hurt the dog. It teaches the dog, in a clear way that makes sense to the animal, how to behave in a way that will make the dog and all those around it happier. Keep it up =)

I love that you said this. I saw dogs playing, and realized, they’re baring their teeth, they’re nipping, they’re tussling…. And it’s all communication. Me talking to my 70 pound Puginu Shepherd like a human, is not her preferred language lol. SHE was trained since day one, and I don’t have to say much to her in the way of commands now that she’s 3. She instinctively knows what to do, and will react instantly to a word or movement of the leash. Off leash she is glued to my side like Velcro unless she’s released to play in a field or something. But when a dog is a rescue or otherwise not trained properly from the time they are a puppy, then Dog Daddy Style is NEEDED DESPERATELY! And it’s a joy to watch! Although DDs shorts make me cry EVERY TIME-- the dang music!

I am a dog-sitter and i use your technics to the best of my ability.. I have watched closely and have even noticed subtle nuances in your ways of training. I'm not a dog trainer by any means, but i do take care of some slightly reactive dogs who I watch often. Your methods have been so helpful with the dogs. They remember me and know they're safe with me. I have told their owners about you, but I guess it's easier to let the dogs act up because they're back to square one when I go back. It usually takes me a day or so to re-correct them when I go back to care for them, but it's all worth it. Best regards always

I am semi retired dog sitter that ended up sometimes correcting behavioural problems that others hadn’t been able to solve. What I came to understand is the owners just don’t really care, not important enough to them to put any effort into fixing the dog. I also have noticed that dogs behaviour will tell you what is going on in that household(hostility, fear, eating disorders, disrespectful, etc), the dogs are acting out who their owners are. I had about 25% of the dogs not want to go home with the owners. They were happy to see them, just preferred to stay with a balanced pack that got lots of outdoor activity in the wilderness. Good luck on your journey!

I'm sick of 'positive only or your an abuser' bullshit. Yes any dog that CAN be trained with positive methods SHOULD be, but if that's jot orking you step it up, always using the least aversive method needed until you have success. One of my dog wears a prong collar, she nearly pulled me in front of a bus on a flat collar and chocked herself, we tried training heel with treats and luring but didn't help, tried a gentle leader, she hated it, tried a prong and guess what, she happily wore it and started walking nicely 🤷♂️ she runs away from a harness ir gentle leader but if I get the prong out she's like 'OK out it on' if it was torture she wouldn't be so accepting and no I never conditioned her to like it, I gave her options ro see what she was comfortable with and that was the prong. But I have to try to deny it to a lot of people cuz they insist it's abuse, like I should have continued to let the dog pull us both into dangerous situations ?!
@daviddines479
Жыл бұрын
@@LailaHepburnandmarleysdit The emotion your describing is the reason why I bothered to comment as well. I think modern society is weak particularly (possibly predominantly) in the west. Our lives have been too easy for too long. The result is people wishfully thinking everything can be better with no effort. With regards to positive only people who think that exerting control over dangerous animals is abuse they should be made to live an an island with all the dogs they couldnt train. Society could pay for their amazon deliveries to the island. I dont think wed have to pay for them for long. To stop indulging my own fantasies they put out dangerous weak messages to owners who then allow their dogs to go out and violate people and other dogs. I first saw Will Atherton (also a youtuber who I rate a s great) use a prong collar. Looked like a torture device to me. Then I watched him use it and was stunned. He kept calling it a communication tool. Ive also seen him fit one snugly to his own neck and correct himself way harder than ive ever seen him correct a dog. And continue his commentary whilst doing so. Dog Daddy is way less carebear about prongs than Will Atherton and hes uses them to incredible effect very often. I think of it as a force multiplier. If your a small lady with a big dog you probably wont be able to hold him back on his leash for as long as he needs to walk. When youve trained him properly you wont need a prong. But training a big dog for a small person the prong is invaluable. I love Joel Beckman's (youtuber dog trainer who used to work with killer whales and big cats) work and attitude and hes super into a gentle leader. He says the plus with a gentle leader is that it turns the dogs eyes to you. I think thats only true with high quality corrections. Hes not super into a prong but he always says you dont need a gentle leader, you dont need a prong, you can train a dog to heel walk in a harness but if anything doesnt work try another method. His adaptability is what makes him successful I think. Id try a prong early on a dog. Maybe even a prong on a puppy with a long leash to train recall. For communication. Well done on successfully cycling methods until you found one that worked. When people negatively judge you for a prongs use I might be inclined to suggesting to them they shouldnt judge a book by its cover. I did and I was wrong.

I’ve raised many puppies in my home and I’ve also had pregnant dogs raise puppies. This has given me the chance to learn about their behaviors. Whenever I would bring a new puppy home they would almost always annoy the older dogs. They are tolerant but when they’ve had enough they will bark or nip them. They don’t positively reinforce 😂. That sends the message and she will back off. Same with the Mother’s. They correct certain behaviors in the pups in a similar way. Your methods of training are great and it’s helped me help other people with their dogs and also correct my own when needed. I still believe that dogs do live in packs and have a hierarchy.

After seeing many different trainers online and the different methods, I feel confident to say that DD is one of the very top trainers around the world. The ones who do not agree are generally misinformed people. Sadly, I learned this includes professional healthcare individuals as well. It seems a common theme to be encouraged to sedate your animal with anxiety medicines. As an individual with an anxiety disorder, I can tell you that anxiety medicines don't help humans a whole lot either. I would say they are more of a loose band-aid. The problem never goes away, and anxious behaviors are always going to break through sometimes. For me, that comes in the form of a panic attack. I can't see how it would be much different for a dog or cat. I wouldn't want my pet to have to live this way. I support DD!💯

My dogs can sit, stay ,come here, lay down, plays dead, rolls over, walk on 2 legs like a person 😂 our chiweenie is the funniest, high five, shake, balances food when you put it on their nose, watches on command, sits on command in any weather condition. Follows on the hip without the Leash. And with the leash there's like nothing there! I've put a tremendous amount of work in my kids as I call them! By now I want to post how cool they are. I have a puppy currently that I'm working on being the all dog! Been wanting to post but we'll see. Her genetics are lab heeler an pit. But it's a super brilliant loyal breed! Loved this long, regular pace video, with really clear narration. We can well see the dogs' body language as they transition from "freaked out" to calm. That poor biggest dog, so twitchy and jittery in the beginning,....constantly trying to spin its head around to look for threats, ears flicking back and forth, whites of the eyes showing. It's so clear that its state of hypervigilance causes it to be a constant mass of nerves and irritability. DD is right to stress that not allowing the dog's hyper-vigilant behaviours, such as perimeter scanning, is important, we can see how it helps lower the dog's baseline anxiety; the dog will stay calm for longer and therefore be less triggered. I loved that fabulous moment at 5:55, when the shorter inside dog, for the first time, spontaneously looks up at DD's face for guidance. With that happy expression. Trust established! DD says "good girl, c'mon, Yess!" and so do we!

Can anyone answer this please -- is the slip collar and prong collar only use for training? How much training time is recommended per day? And for just taking daily walks can you graduate the dog out of those tools?

If the prong collars are not painful then exactly how do they work?

Just like people, there is no one size fits all for personality and needs. What amazes me about positive only trainers is they don't seem to understand this. If your dog responds to that training then great! No need to go this route. But some dogs only respond to this type of training. And a lot of these dogs and their owners could end up in a tragic situation otherwise. So the benefit of this approach outweighs what could become of these more aggressive and reactive dogs.😢

My dogs will even fight each other so I don't know what to do right now I keep them separated in the house.

I got bit by a pitbull recently because he was off leash and out-of-control, and the owner yelled at me for their dog, biting me. Luckily, he had his shots and I just have a scar on my arm. It could’ve been a lot worse, but seriously Pitbulls are scary! I would like to know what to do when you see a pitbull, or any dog, running across the yard coming to you when you’re defenseless. This dog bit my butt, then bit my arm, and then their owners finally got a hold of him and pulled him off me. It was extremely scary. I’ve never been bit by a dog before and I am in my 50s now. Please take the time to train your dog because other peoples lives are in your hand when they’re out of control. I congratulate this owner. who is acting responsibly and using dog daddy. I love dog daddy. He’s the best.

One more thing… I don’t blame the dog I blame the owners. It’s not the dogs fault. It’s the owners lack of training and lack of knowledge, and not knowing how to handle their animal. The dog was not put down/euthanized by the way.

I have 5 dogs in total, my two biggest concerns are my big dogs. 3 y/o hound mix, and my 2.5 y/o Pitt mix. by watching your videos and some other videos out there on KZitem, I would say because of the way I raised them they are anxious and fearful, they haven't really been socialized that much and they act aggressively towards the vet any anyone who approaches. im not sure what else I can do im trying to research the products and training tools so I can teach them right, are you coming anywhere near knoxville? if you want to reply to me or if anyone on your team has the time then please get into contact with em ti would be greatly appreciated. thank you! I also love the vids and love the connection you have with every dog you work with. you can really tell you're like a messiah of good hope for the aggressive dogs and their owners who just haven't been doing the right things to give their dogs the confidence they deserve.

So this might be harsh, but if you clearly dont have the skills to properly train these dogs, why take such high intensity dogs, and have 5(!!!)? I honestly can not understand this, very irresponsible for the dogs and people and animals living around you.

@@DrAugurk so what you expect someone to just give a dog up because they don’t know how to properly train them? no that just leaves the dog with more issues than they had before. it’s better to work with your dogs no matter what. we originally had only two big dogs but as my girls nana died it was take her two little ones or let them be put down. you tell me what you would’ve chosen. and i didn’t choose such high intensity dogs, i rescued them from abusive owners so the damage isn’t from me, im trying to learn what i can do to help my dogs, it would be greatly appreciated if you kept out my comments as what you said was idiotic, thank you for your concern and have a great day.

Check out Joel Beckman's Rottweiler named Creed video for the foundation video for loose leash walking and reactivity. He also has little dog and puppy videos if you don't have a 100lb Rottweiler. Pain messes with their brains. Lot of countries outlaw prong and shock ecollars, so I think Joel is is ahead of the game. Larry Krohn is in TN I believe. Stonnie Dennis is in KY. Part of it is you have to step up confidently so the dog doesn't feel like they have to react. McCann has a great video on what kind of barker do you have that's very informative. Also, check out McCann's instructor Carol with the field Spaniel named Cheerio. Put an empty dish across the room. Practice individually with each dog first. You're doing about turns until you can get to the dish without any pulling. Then add distractions and/or treats in the dish and start again. Susan Garrett has a great video on a dog's TEMP that helps you pick up on the dog's body language no matter how subtle. Also she has a video on 20 games to play when you can't get out to exercise them due to the weather or injury. Nose Work helps a lot to develop their confidence. Baebae's training helped me a lot with my Dobe, especially with Nose Work - she's actually a Nose work judge. Sara Ondrako has a video on how to make a snuffle mat with a pocket to help tamp down their energy level and stimulate them mentally. Hope that helps.
