I think, this reader clearly fail to understand the magnitude of variance in poker. Especially in live poker even winning players will certainly not win every session, and even over 10 or 50 sessions losing is completely normal and expected due to the incredibly small number of hands played. So if you expect, that you are always going to win, because you are better than the guy with 92, then poker in general will be, what Alec call a negative freeroll. You can never exceed your expectations, but you will often fail to meet them, because they are wildly unrealistic. The variance in poker require a lot of patience, but its also, what keep the guy with 92 coming back to the game to lose his money time and time again. Just think about how different poker is from other sports like for instance tennis. In poker a rich amateur can sit down and play against Phil Ivey, and if he only does it for a few evenings, he have a decent chance to walk away as a winner. Whereas if an amateur tennisplayer challenge the world champion, he will lose 100 out of 100 matches. So if you are serious about poker, you need to learn to embrace those bad beats and understand, that they are, what keep the entire game going around.

This was just the video I needed today... had an epic bad run yesterday which I cursed off as bad luck... after watching this video I went back through my notes from the session and realised that I made more mistakes than I thought and guess what? The bad beat hands didn't cost me nearly as much as the hands where I made mistakes. Thanks Alec for the focus shift just what I needed to brush off (and learn from) yesterdays session!

Mindset and accountability are key elements. Most people who are starting out in poker tournaments are learning which hands play better than others. They are results orientated and are upset when their AA's are beaten by small pairs or even KK. They forget that 80% favorites mean you will still lose 20% of the time. Tournaments reality is you only cash 20% of the time and you have to run decently to do this. After you have played a thousand tournaments you realize you have to run good to get in the money. Winning is even tougher. Once you get used to this you do not even tell bad beat stories anymore. You know getting sucked out on the river is just part of the game. Here is one other point. Sometimes in a tournament a big stack will call you with A-3 because your stack size is so small it will make no difference to his position. You may have gone all in with A-K and say boy that is a dumb play on his part. Of course they put a 3 on the river and you get knocked out of the tournament. Its not bad luck or being beaten by a worse player. You have to go all in because of your stack size that is why the big stacks at the end of tournaments can make plays like this. It can take a long time to realize these truths. I do not know if this makes you a better player but it sure helps living with the realities of playing in tournaments.

Alec i got a question. A theoretically one. If we lose like 10 times 90%. Would u keep playing that day if it wouldnt affect your mood and emotions? Or is it like a bad day and you should stop anyways ? Even if u re not affected by your feelings which in real life is probably not possible. It is just sometimes not possible to win.( im mostly talkin about soin and gos where u see losing yourself morw often the 80% due to more hands played and maybe even more tables.)

Been playing poker for 16 years online off & on and I still dont understand variance because things still surprise me. I'm a winning player in Tournaments over many sites and I love playing tournaments on ACR but I swear their cash games their RNG rigged in order to get max rake on average to get back the 18 million lost in tournament overlays last year. To some who dont play on there it seems like ok this guy must be new and sucks but in reality I fully understand variance BUT I'm either not cut right for cash games or variance in cash games is way higher than we all think. It is completely normal to lose 50 buy ins in a cash game over time before you start winning because of variance but when does it mathematically not make sense to take so many bad beats over and over in cash games? I'm talking I got all in on flop more then 10 times in 2 weeks and all 10 times the opponent was drawing so close to dead they were no more than 5% to win in Holdem or PLO. EVen when I take less variance routes it still happens for example. I had KK pre raised got 3 bet and normally would just shove here pre but ACR's variance seems to be so high I decided to take the less variant route and just call the 3bet OOP. Flop comes KQ5 rainbow. We get all in on the flop and the guy has AQ off suit so middle pair top kicker. He was a 2.02% chance to win on flop and goes runner runner A A to win. Next day PLO have AA24 single suit vs a guy who had A583 3bet pre etc flop comes A54 rainbow we get all in on flop and literally goes runner runner 5 5 to win for quads! Tournaments are different right because you dont lose a bunch of cash every time you get outdrawn. The craziest shit happens. I said I wasn't going to play cash games since I'm a winning player in tournaments over 5 sites over the past decade but on ACR even though I shouldnt be I'am a losing cash game player. So I decided 2 weeks ago to start playing again and once I was reminded how bad players were I had to play especially plo where the donkfest is real. I truly believe Cash Games are just harder to maintain over time with Rake & variance but in saying that I want to play and be a winner but it's clearly messing with my mind very badly. It all began when I started playing poker again after taking time off so I started playing Tournaments making deep runs final tables etc. Got 7th in a bigger tourney and I shouldnt of but I went and played plo and literally from the first table I sat at it was just one bad beat after another time after time getting my money in ahead of everyone. I lost $200 playing 10 cent 25 cent and some 50PLO and straight getting fucked. I literally didnt get it in bad 1 time in those 2 weeks and literally since then I have been losing. It's not affecting my tourney play at all since I have been trying to perfect that for over a decade but it has affected the fact I don't get to play in tourneys all the time because I keep trying to chase my losses. I'm in a weird spot being a veteran of poker not winning at cash games. I have noticed once I take multiple bad beats in a day in cash games it really effects me emotionally even if it's in reality not alot of money. These has made me literally quit poker many times and this time I was just going to play tounraments because it makes me happy and I believe tournaments field will always be extremely weak up to certain buy ins. Should I give up Cash Games and keep pumping money into it or should I take the losses not worry about my cash game stats and continue doing what I'm best at and stop playing Cash Games? I truly enjoy playing PLO Cash Games also at leadt more than NLH cash games. PLO is very profitable but the swings are insane and 99% of plo players are playing way above their bankroll and arent playing with 80 buy ins in their account. So i'm torn and have been. All of this added in with people like Joey Ingram showing proof that Americas Cardroom is rigged for cash games and they have bots playing. When I see that then know what I have been going through and it doesnt seem natural it starts making me wonder what is going on and if its me or he is right and you have next to no chance of winning in cash games. IDK what to do sorry its long but its truth I need some help. If anyone knows anything more about what Joey said please comment here. It would be nice to know that I was right and they are or have been up to something. Thanks for your time and please be nice I never do this but it's time to tell what Im going through.

Poker isnt easy. It's the most difficult game out there. if you're not studying and learning how to improve, you'll wont be a winning player; it's a fact. Pro athlete doesnt sit on their butt eating pizza and drinking beer 24/7 days week. No, they are training and training and training nonstop. Poker is the exact samething. You have to study and keep on studying. Is studying fun? for me, it's not fun. I HATE studying, but I study and put in a lot of hours becuase I know how improtant it is to study.. The way I study for hand ranges is by watching a lot of videos and taking notes as well as learning how to dissect hands pre and post flop over and over and over and over again. Maybe you played the hand 100 percent perfect if so, move on. If not, look at that hand again and see what you could have done anything differently. I'm telling the better you understand hand ranges and better you can look at the board, your decision of what to do is clearer.
@philivey1123

You are right about studying no doubt but after so many years there are only so many new tricks so the only studying needed done is knowing equity, pot odds, implied odds etc. Studying does not and will not make you a winner. Variance is a bitch and especially if its a rigged RNG software like I believe ACR does in their Cash Games.

Bad beats are tough and can crush your soul. But those players are your advantage! Over the long run, those bad players will build your bankroll. Over the short term they will suck out... and that's why they are there, they love the thrill of 9-2 beating A-A on the river. Casino's live in the world of odds, they built towns like Las Vegas knowing the long term odds are in their favor. The gamblers will win only in the short term, that keeps them coming back. Be a casino, not a gambler.

this is a good video but it only made me more frustrated. I'm going through a particularly bad stretch of poker lately, and I'm losing to being unlucky. It's not good luck when your 70, 80, or 90 percent hand holds up, it's normal, but it IS bad luck when you lose those hands. It's not equal footing. So Alec says when I get in a four hundred big blind pot as an 83% favorite on the flop and lose I need to take accountability for that? How dare I ever get it in as a big favorite, shame on me! I suck!
@ConsciousPoker

Hey man, it's not that you didn't get unlucky in that one hand, you did. But it's about keeping the perspective that it's rather irrelevant in the grand scheme of things when you compare it to the other luck you had in your life, most certainly when it counts more.

I wonder if you have to explain math to someone on this fundamental basis if they really have a chance of becoming a winning player. And, assuming all variables remain the same and flipping a coin is not impacted by the weight of one surface, it will never be 50.1% after a billion flips. Do the math, lol! a .1% would mean 2 million more heads than tails or vice versa. Impossible. (I couldn't resist that wise *ss comment!)
@alienpoker
5 жыл бұрын
I can’t agree. It will always vary one way or the other. It could be off by 2 million after a billion flips. Just as it could be 53%/47% after 100 flips. Do the math from that pov. The difference is found only when you stop and count the percentages. You might have to go to 1 billion 100 million flips before it evened back out again. The point is- it would.

George Ludwig 1. That’s not my last sentence. 2. There is always a viewpoint, even in math. Are you really subtracting, or adding a negative number? 3. I took issue with you saying ‘never’. Of course it could be non- 50/50 at any point. Otherwise we are saying H/T is not a random occurrence. It WILL tend to regress to the odds, but not at any predefined point.
