Hallowed be thy name is a song you're going to love. The Trooper is actually kind of simple for Maiden. They are easily in the top 3 metal bands of all time.

'The Trooper' was written by bassist Steve Harris, who is the founder, leader and key songwriter of Iron Maiden... The way Harris writes music is to play bass to a tempo and whistle the guitar melodies that go w/ the rhythm... The other band members join in during rehearsals and jam on the song until they r happy w/ the arrangement... Harris also wrote the lyrics about the Light Brigade which fought for the British in the Crimean War of the 1800's... In Iron Maiden, they always had 2 (now 3) lead guitarists that traded leads and played dual rhythm guitars and lead harmonies (similar to what the 70's band Thin Lizzy did w/ guitarists Scott Gorham & Brian Robertson) Guitarist Adrian Smith said that Maiden's studio records had up to 6 guitar tracks on them, so it was easy when they switched from 2 to 3 guitarists to pick which parts they wanted to play in concert... Dave Murray is the most technical player, while Adrian Smith is the more prolific composer... and guitarist Janick Gers (who joined Maiden in 1990) has a very shredding, wild style of playing. But it works very well... Dave, Adrian and Janick were nicknamed 'The 3 Amigos' cos they got along so well together and never fought or argued. Steve Harris (bass) was very determined to write songs which combined British heavy rock w/ progressive rock, which included time changes and complex arrangements... He formed Iron Maiden in 1975 in London as a pub band and started playing original songs as well as covers and built a following in the UK w/ persistent touring in bars and clubs without a record out between 1975 and 1979... Iron Maiden went through a number or musicians and vocalists in their early days... Dave Murray (guitar) joined permanently by 1977... Paul Di'Anno (vocals) also joined in '77 and gave Iron Maiden a punk rock edge... The band was finally signed in 1979 and released their debut album in 1980, followed by the 2nd album 'Killers' in 1981 as Adrian Smith (guitar) joined on 2nd guitar... Iron Maiden toured the UK, Europe, N. America and Japan by '81... However, the heavy touring schedule led to vocalist Paul Di'Anno unable to cope on the road and he left the band that year. Bruce Dickinson (vocals) replaced Paul Di'Anno and recorded their first #1 UK album 'The number of the beast' in 1982, which also sold platinum in the US (1 million copies) ... Bruce Dickinson had a higher vocal range that streamlined Iron Maiden's sound and made then an arena heavy metal band. Nicko McBrain (drums) replaced the previous drummer Clive Burr in 1983 and recorded their 4th album 'Piece of mind'... which included 'The Trooper'... a song that Maiden still plays live in concert. The album also sold platinum. Iron Maiden dominated the 80's w/ more platinum albums - 'Powerslave' (1984)... 'Somewhere in time' (1986) and 'Seventh son of a seventh son' (1988)... 'Seventh son...' became their 2nd #1 UK album. Guitarist Adrian Smith left the band in 1990 and was replaced by Janick Gers (guitar)... Their 90's albums 'No prayer for the dying' (1990) and 'Fear of the dark' (1992) were not as successful ('Fear of the dark' did become their 3rd #1 album in the UK) in the new decade... Vocalist Bruce Dickinson grew weary of touring and announced that he was leaving Iron Maiden in 1993 for a solo career. The departure of Bruce Dickinson came at the worst time in the 90's when Iron Maiden was regarded as an "80's relic" in the grunge/ alternative rock 90's decade... Blaze Bayley (vocals) joined Iron Maiden in 1995 and recorded 2 album - 'The X factor' (1995) and 'Virtual XI' (1998)... However, Bayley had a gruff vocal delivery and didn't have Dickinson's vocal range... so, the Maiden albums were darker and sold poorly... Maiden fans hated the new singer in concert. In 1999, Iron Maiden made the decision to fire Blaze Bayley and announced that both Bruce Dickinson (vocals) and Adrian Smith (now on 3rd guitar) were rejoining the band... Their 2000 album 'Brave new world' was a major comeback for Maiden and relaunched the band's career and popularity worldwide... Subsequent Maiden albums have done very well, but fans young & old still favor the classic Maiden songs from the 80's... Classics like - 'Wasted years' ... 'The evil that men do' ... 'Run to the hills' ... '2 minutes to midnight' ... 'The number of the beast'... 'Fear of the dark'... 🤘🤘

Damn. A real Maiden fan. Cool. I'm 57 and I've been an Iron Maiden fan since I was a sophomore and heard Number of the Beast for the first time. Then Piece of Mind came out. That and Blizzard of Oz are still my favorite albums of all time and that's saying a lot.

Everybody gonna say it but Iron Maiden needs to be experienced live. This stuff hits different when 100,000 people scream that “Woahahohohahoh oh oh ohhh” and Maiden is the best to ever do it live. Hallowed be thy Name live from Hammersmith in 82 is the way to go. Also, they have 3 lead guitarists now cuz they added Jannick Gers.

There are so many to choose from. Best Metal/Hard Rock band ever, IMO

One of best Concerts I ever saw . I was fortunate to see them Multiple times . First time with their original Singer , Paul Dianno on the Killers tour, in 1981, at L'Amours in Brooklyn , NYC , the heavy metal club on the East Coast at the time. Second time at Madison Square nGarden on The Number of the Beast Tour w/ Quiet Riot opening. . This was the night Cum On feel the Noise went #1 . The first Metal Band to go #1 on Billboard but Maiden style the show. But the most memorable was on the Powerslave tour , they performed at Radio City Music hall w/ Accept from Germany opening. Maiden was fantastic that night and the Acoustics were amazing . I've seen many bands , in many genres but few can match the energy and musicianship of Iron Maiden , maybe only Rush who I saw at Radio City as well and early Metallica like 15 times and of course Lemmy and Motorhead . keep It Rocking !🎶🎤🎧🎸🎸🎸🥁🤘🤘🤘

EVERY fan poll of Maiden songs is won by Hallowed Be Thy Name, for a reason. The 1982 live version is a masterpiece. One thing of note you said zero about the lyrical content. Maiden are true masters of story telling, it is just as important as the music. This song is about the true life Chargers of the Light Brigade in the Crimean (Ukraine) war vs the Russians in the 19th century. Hallowed is about someone waiting to be hung. I suggest doing a lyrical breakdown after the song or reading the lyrics before the video.

Excited to check it out! I didn't speak on it in the beginning, but I normally don't do lyric breakdowns or anything on a first listen. I generally use the first check out to be a gauge on interest on the 'sound'. Perhaps I should have done it this time though. Going forward, I shall. :)

This is why their music lives on, why the would pull 250,000 people to a gig. The story of the 1854 battle of balaclava, During the Crimean war. Footage was from the 1934 Errol Flynn movie charge of the light brigade. The words on screen are from Alfred Lord Tennyson poem: Charge of the light brigade 1. Half a league, half a league, Half a league onward, All in the valley of Death Rode the six hundred. "Charge," was the captain's cry; Their's not to reason why, Their's not to make reply, Their's but to do and die, Into the valley of Death Rode the six hundred. 2. Cannon to right of them, Cannon to left of them, Cannon in front of them Volley'd and thunder'd; Storm'd at with shot and shell, Boldly they rode and well; Into the jaws of Death, Into the mouth of Hell, Rode the six hundred. 3. Flash'd all their sabres bare, Flash'd all at once in air, Sabring the gunners there, Charging an army, while All the world wonder'd: Plunged in the battery-smoke Fiercely the line they broke; Strong was the sabre-stroke; Making an army reel Shaken and sunder'd. Then they rode back, but not, Not the six hundred. 4. Cannon to right of them, Cannon to left of them, Cannon behind them Volley'd and thunder'd; Storm'd at with shot and shell, They that had struck so well Rode thro' the jaws of Death, Half a league back again, Up from the mouth of Hell, All that was left of them, Left of six hundred. 5. Honour the brave and bold! Long shall the tale be told, Yea, when our babes are old- How they rode onward.
