I admire your determination and what you accomplished at such a young age. I had a similar situation and I was taught like you; by my dad as he would say: "If You don't do it, it won't get done! Never expect somebody else to do what you need to do because it's your responsibility to get it done!" When I got started, with no experience, a retired NFL football player observed me and told me I reminded him of a bulldog he had named, "Tenacious." Ever since I try to tackle everything with pride and vigor and it's served me well for over 50 years and I wouldn't have it any other way.

I'm pushing 70, and lived, and still live by the seat of my pants.. I know no other way. I've been a steelworker, draftsman, welder, auto body painter, illustrator, mechanic, wood worker, did construction, writer, shipping and receiving, forklift driver full-time musician/entertainer, museum exhibit creator/maker, sculptor, maintenance technician... and even did a stint being homeless for 2 years (not recommended), rode a bicycle from Philly to Boston, hiked, kayaked, invented an attachment to ride bicycle on (abandoned) railroad tracks... and I'm only getting started... Now on Social Security, which is not enough to live on... i need work, but nobody hires anyone over 50, so I hustle... fix-it make-it gigs, play some music, and supplement my paltry SS check. I've no regrets... many lessons learned... and I keep learning every day, make mistakes... a.k.a. "lessons." It was great to hear your story... ya done good.

I tried to get a neighbor to hire me to work in his carpenter shop when i was about 8 or 9. Since then I have mowed grass, painted houses, framed houses, worked for grocery stores, a restaurant, locksmith, delivery company, Southwestern Bell Telephone, collected scrap metal, been in I.T. for 20 years now, have a small collection of rent houses, and now moving into wholesaling real estate. I was going to say, "I hope it works out" but you know what? I'll figure a way to MAKE IT WORK! Cheers!

You and I have a lot on common including driving a Diamond T at age 19 pulling a lot of weight. (I was pulling a loader in the north Georgia mountains) before I got back home (after dark) the exhaust pipe fell off at the manifold. It was so loud I had to stick my fingers in my ears and steer with my elbows. Then about 1 mile away from parking this beast, #1 gearshift came out of the transmission and I still had one intersection and at least two red lights to go through. No cars in the intersections and all the lights were green. I had made it. I don't remember ever driving that truck again. By the way, I had my grandson out digging with the backhoe too. I just left him with it (with some instruction) so he could figure it out on his own.

My brother from another mother. Cody, thank you. This story re-ignited my determination to not go softly into the night. No matter our circumstances, we should fight to carry on. I had forgotten that of late. Thank you for reminding me. May GOD continue to bless you and your family.

Respect earned! Risk is what builds character, and nations... Regulation hidden under the guise of safety is what's killing freedom. I have traveled s similar path in my youth as well... 69 kenworth with a 10-4... 2 stick setup. My first time commenting. And am located in the communist country of Canada.

To a point, sure, but he was risking the lives/well-being of others more than his own when it came to hauling. You should be free to risk your own life/health/safety, but not that of another. Regulations are to protect other people from you (and vice versa), not you from yourself.

@@agentx250 He will only understand your statement when he loses someone he cares about because someone was risking the lives/well being of his family. The land I live in was granted to an English soldier after his 20 years of service to the King, after the war of 1812. In the King's grant, he is granted the use of the water, the land, the air, and the mineral rights to the center of the earth ( below his concession). He was forbidden to poison the air, land and water, and could not limit his neighbour from enjoying his land, air and water.

Really wish I had a man in my life like this. I'm 28 and made a lot of mistakes but for whatever reason I have had an awakening of sorts and see where my life is headed if I continue the toxic cycle I am in. I want to be a good man and father and not have some victim mentality. I don't want fear to continue to consume me.

Love hearing about your stories from the past... pulls me back to the 80's and early 90's, too, and the things I had to do to get it done. Now in my 50's, I cannot believe the ways I once had to "git 'er done" just to make enough to survive - but I did. I am one of those "spinal cord damage" people who can no longer work normal work and have had to become creative (within the law) in order to bring in extra income. I'll tell ya, Cody, yes we have the internet, but when you're in a medicated coma for most of the day and night, there's not a whole lot one can do online - there's things that CAN be done, but not a lot - I have no wife, no girlfriend, no kids and no house payment (cleared out my bills with the settlement money)... Oh, how your stories bring me back to the days of being able to live and have a life. Thanks, and may God continue to bless you and your family!

This story reminds me of the documentary I watched on the Hoover Dam and Holland Tunnel constructions... It made me think of the guys driving trucks barefoot, standing up looking over the trucks backward because they had to take off the mirrors to fit, and steering with their toes! Glad you are still here!

Dang, these things are really catching on. You should try creating your own podcast. You wouldn’t even need to record more for it, just continue making these types of videos, and just use the Audio for the podcast. It might be a great new step for the channel. Great video as always.

I have a very similar story. Started laboring for my neighbors excavating company at 15 and when I was 18 the operator was arrested with his 3rd DUI and the boss asked me, "think you can run a hoe?" I said sure I play video games lol. Anyways that's how it started and at 21 I was able to secure a 1 year contract with a modular home company and went $150,000 in debt. 13 years later I'm still slinging dirt!

I liked this video a lot. I'm in a transition now that is under the same type of circumstance. I have been working for myself as an artist builder that has been keeping my head above water by taking custom work orders. Orders of things I dont even know how or if I can even do.but failure is not an option. And I always find a way..With the recent shadow b@nn!ng my business has been tanking. My normal conservative views on Facebook are basically dropping my ability to get views on IG where I do 100% of my business. This is forcing me to change direction. I am starting welding school Monday to try and make a change. I'm trying to make my girlfriend my wife and there needs to be a better way to get life going. So I'm going to get into a skilled marketable trade. I'll still be able to be creative with my art in my free time, if I have any, but I'll also have a trade to help move forward in life. I hope to be the best welder in the nation. That's a tall order but it can be done as long as I work hard and apply myself. In a nut shell. This video was very enjoyable for me at this point in my life.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but ......I am 68 and in another transition...8th or 9th...I forget. I believe I can tell you one important key!! You need to work more than forty hours!! Because I worked long hours at a trade... carpentry...I was able to mostly retire in 1999 at 48...I say mostly because you never really want to retire because that is when you start dying!!! I am also an artist....not a great one....but it's fun...you will be fine with that attitude!

I'm back! You mentioned having time for your art. You should have time if you don't waste it "playing online" which includes spending beaucoup bucks on "things" that people now consider nessesary. Or worrying about your "appearance"...if you spend more than ten minutes in the morning preening yourself you are making a big mistake. Thrift! Things will only get in your way. We do not own our things...our things own us! A new USB router I phone!!! Or a paintbrush??? Can't have both!!!
