The big thing I think is your comment that "Your experience" says that the other side has the better colour. That is where the courage is needed, you have to cut the stones, a lot of them, to get the experience that tells you which way to go when cutting a stone. Yeah you'll stuff some up, but you need to keep going cause you will get better. Experience counts.

Back in the ‘60s there was a fellow in Australia who sold quart jars of opal for about $25 U.S. and ship it to the US. My mother bought a jar that had gorgeous pieces of fire opal. Other than shaping a piece she did all the cutting by hand using a clam shell stuffed with cotton and silicon carbide sandpaper over it. It seems the fire could be in then layers and easily lost by over cutting.

I ended up with thousands of carats of opal from a older fellow who mined Lightning Ridge. My father in law who also mined opal introduced me. The old gent was looking for good mechanics tools. I traded him a bunch of my Snap-On and MAC tools for all of these. I later ended up with one of his retirement stones. A superb black opal weight 13 carats. I also got another superb black opal from him but it has crazing going on through the face. Shame really as it is a extremely bright and has tons of flash. I honestly believe many of the best stones came from mines earlier in life. They do not seem to pull out as much now days. I still am looking for a Belemnite opal and a pineapple opal. Other fossil opals I have including a hard to find opalized tooth. Right now the opals I find exciting are treated Welo and the black limb opals out of Indonesia. Stunning opals. Not as good as a Aussie opal but nice nevertheless.

Good morning Justin, a much better way to spend a few minutes with a cup of tea than watching the news, watching you change a nice opal into a even nicer opal. After you cleaned the potch off I wasn't so sure it was any better. It wasn't until you had polished it that we could see that additional play of colour with the blue-green and then the yellowish gold flecks as well. This ended up being a good call, Even if it did not come up to your original expectations. Keep Safe & Keep Rockin

G’day mate, your channel was in me recommended videos. I reckon I took a go at watching it. I live in Margaret River, WA. So I’m definitely into surfing and drinking great wine 🏄🏻♂️🍷🍾🥂😎 However, watching your video(s) mate, left me bloody gobsmacked, after seeing the finished Opals. I never really watched much about Opal mining, cutting, polishing, etc...prior to binge watching your KZitem channel and all your videos ~ rEven though I grew up in WA, I never was interested in the process. However, after giving your channel a play, I’m now bloody addicted mate. It’s wicked addictive and surprising to see how the Opal(s) will turn out after you’ve cut and polished the rough. A lot of the rough looks like absolute rubbish before you start mate, then you turn those ugly boogers into stunning GEMS!!! What an incredibly addictive hobby, job, or passion. I don’t know if cutting Opal’s is your profession, but good on ya mate? ~ You do an amazing job turning a clump of earth into a beautiful Gem that can become a gorgeous piece of jewelry! It’s crazy to see what you start with, and then compare that to the finished product (Gem). The cutting process seems so dodgy at times, just hoping you make the right decision where to cut. Obviously, it seems you’re spot on with your decision making, when you look at your final results! Great job mate. Your videos are extremely entertaining and educational. Everyone assumes if your Aussie, you’re an Opal miner; you wrestle Crocs; you have Roos & Koalas as pets; and most importantly, you play the didgeridoo, obviously, not true. However, I’m certainly more informed and have learned a lot about Opal’s, after binge watching your KZitem channel. Plus, you just got a new Sub. What the hell, I even checked the bell. Cheers mate from Margaret River, Western OZ!!!

2 minutes in havnt seen results and I agree 1000% the brightness showing on the edges of the stone without potch makes me think its a dark crystal. And a double sided one . More green on top more blue on bottom! And removing the potch would make the blue base more evenly colored. Increasing the price id say even if the green doesn't face

@stevenbriggs784
4 жыл бұрын
depending on the density of the silica spheres the colouration changes as we know, and as we know on one side of the spectrum is blue, the other is red. the body tone is usually seen as "black or white" but, in reality, black and white is just a collection of colours and shades of reds and blues, and it just so happens at the certain angle you can see the amber/red tint to the body tone :)
@mikefriend1514
4 жыл бұрын
I actually noticed that effect at 13:30. It seems even more pronounced then around the edges - a reddish, orange glow. Not noticed that effect before either, perhaps because this is a crystal opal doublet rather than a black opal.
