I built one years ago that used a spark igniter. We shot hairspray into it as fuel. Didn’t have any potatoes, but I had a bunch of apples that were bigger than the bore. So I sharpened the outer edge of the bore where if you took the Apple and rotated it, it would cut and make a perfect fit. Then all of the peelings would fold in behind it, went outside in the backyard to test it. We had had an ice storm the night before so all the tree limbs had a quarter inch of ice on them. When I shot that thing off, it went up into the tree and it was like shrapnel cutting through the tree limbs. as the limbs are raining down around me all I could think of was “coooool!”

Built one when I was 12 years old. Decades ago tennis balls were sold in metal cans. Three balls per can, so they were long cans. Punctured the bottom of three cans, taped them together and placed a hole on the bottom side of the fourth can. Poured about 3 oz of alcohol into the cans and spun them around to get alcohol all the way down to the bottom can. Dropped a tennis ball into the top can. Ball could not go further down because the bottom of the top three cans was only punctured. Took a match to the only hole on the side of the bottom can, and booooooom. The tennis ball went so far up in the air we could barely see it. My next adventure was more complicated. Home made gun powder. Followed by a homemade pipe bomb. Buried the bomb and blew it up leaving a three foot wide crater. But I was 13 by then and more responsible. Set up a perimeter and wore safety glasses 😅

There is a story in my Family about my Great Grandfather. Apparently he always carried around a flask with calcium carbide in it. One summer, at a family gathering at a lake, they dug a hole in the beach and put one of those metal Milk jugs into it and filled the hole around it, leaving just the top exposed. They broke the glass off a light bulb, draped it into the jug, put some of the Calcium Carbide into the vessel along with a little water, and hammered the bung into the top. They then backed off and waited a few moments for the hydrogen gas to develop then touched the wires to a battery. The story claims there was a gout of flame 10 feet tall, and a horrendous boom. The bung what blown straight up, out of sight, whistling as it went. They heard the whistling die out, the start up again. They looked at each other and remembered the adage, what goes up, must come down, and they all scurried for cover. Under trees, under cars, in a house. When the bung landed, 30 feet from where it started, it did so in a small wooden row boat, which gracefully settled into the lake in a few feet of water. No indication if anyone got in trouble for the event.

Lot the hole and “boom” the ball went straight up in between my house and the neighbors house (15 -20 ft.) it was silent for about 5-10 seconds and then “thwap” the ball hit the concrete walkway “launchpad” about 6 feet in front of me and bounced into my neighbors backyard. “Shit!”. Ah, memories of my teenage years. I did a more pro setup with a properly mounted grill igniter so there was no risk of it blowing out of the end cap. The Coleman twist to spark lantern igniters were ok, but would stop sparking when they got damp.

Once the propellant charge is consumed, any additional barrel length is just drag on the projectile. Make it 24" and you will get more distance. Also reduce the size of the expansion chamber. Overall length 30-36"

I call them "spud guns." I used to make them in various sizes and lengths. I had things that would go so high, I'd never see them again. I shot a rubber ball into a swimming pool, and it vanished. I had a lemon come down onto the street, and the splatter was instant, and it went at least 10 feet in every (flat) direction. Then came the grapefruit gun . . . I still have it put away after 20 years. P.S. Do NOT use hydrogen as a propellant in spud guns. I never did. It's highly explosive. I used to make hydrogen using chemicals and then electrolysis, but for lift in large balloons.

I remember making one of these as a kid. The middle-aged guys at the hardware store knew exactly what we were up to, as they probably got kids with the same list of components every time. Luckily, they weren't boy scouts about it and even gave us a few pointers. They could probably tell we were good kids- and we didn't end up causing more than our share of property destruction. It's harder to crack the screen on those old tube TVs than your neighbor's windshield.
