Fun fact: the music from Chidi's break-up montage was the same music from Michael's reboot montage.

Like some of the others definitely I agree with you on the UBI thing, and how freeing people up would actually make them more productive or more likely to give things more effort when they're not stressed. I also think that if you asked people about their ideal day, even taking the idea of a mansion and fancy car into account a lot of people wouldn't even want to do anything extreme. With a few exceptions it kinda did feel like if Pillboi had continued talking about his perfect day it would ultimately boil down to doing what makes him happy and spending time with friends.

I would absolutely always keep doing some kind of work or something similar, even if I didnt had to earn money, because I just like being active. I also agree that most people would do the same. After all, humans arent sloths. I already live in a country where I technically could comfortably live off the state but I dont wanna do that, its also heavily stigmatized. I wish I had the freedom to explore more areas that interest me. But I feel even worse for people who can barely afford rent or food and cant even dream of ever working on something they actually enjoy.

I like this episode because it made me think a lot about how rigged the game seemed to be against the two of the group who come from less fortunate circumstances. Have you noticed how Jason's childhood has been similar and also the complete opposite of what we know of Eleanor's? Eleanor has always blamed her bad behavior on having "trash" parents that didn't care about her, from a very young age had to fend for herself, all alone. Jason also didn't have proper parenting, but you can see from this episode that his father clearly loved him and enjoyed being around with him. Jason experienced affection from the people close to him, he had a true friend in Pillboy and an imperfect but loving father in Donkey Doug - and yet he still ended up in the Bad Place. It seems like a catch-22 situation for anyone unlucky enough to have very imperfect parents. If they love you and raise you to be like them, in all likelihood you'll end up as "trashy" as them, and if they don't care and don't pay any attention to you, the trauma and loneliness will likely make you distrust the world, lash out, and become your own brand of "trash". Doomed either way.

Pill Boi is hilarious in this show, but his character as the best friend of a spaceship captain (Dopinder from Deadpool) in "Other Space" is still my favorite role of his.

I agree with you so much about considering the day to day of your ‘perfect life’. We imagine things like money as quick fixes, but you still need to work out what you’ll do with your day to day because depression doesn’t care about your bank balance. Of course, I have thought about this perhaps a little too much, because I can’t actually action my plans and work at the same time, but I know that if the opportunity arises, I’ll be able to make the best of it. And it can also be comforting to consider what will stay the same, because I’ll still find time to read and watch fun videos like this one, just like I do now, which means at least some part of my perfect life matches up with this one.

I think identifying what would stay the same, or at least the things you can do right now that would be part of your 'ideal life' are incredibly helpful to be aware of, and absolutely should be more so part of the conversation when it comes to that question.

About your digression, I agree about the whole 'what next' question. It's a cruise that money doesn't make people happy, and whilst it's usually used to deny people monet the core of it is true. Money, past a certain level that let's you have all you need and feel secure, doesn't make you happy. Consumerism teaches us that happiness requires just 5 more Funko Pops, selling the desire for happiness, not happiness itself. Words that have stuck with me, from perhaps the greatest philosophical work of my lifetime, Cool Runnings, are ones I find myself repeating surprisingly often. "If you're not enough without it, you'll never be enough when you have it."

While these couple episodes may feel like side tangents, I think they address a very important part of this conversation. We've seen how this group can positively influence each other in small, controlled settings, but now it's broadening that out to the real world. Jason learns that not everyone can be saved. He has to give up on his father and focus on Pillboi because that's where he can have the most positive outcome.

I think it's about 50/50 with people who what to focus in and *do* things/hobbies vs. people who really don't want to do more than eat, drink, and hang out. Both fine and everything that does need to get done would work SO much more smoothly if people could just do that.

i know it's a popular series to react to, but if you haven't seen it already, i would LOVE to see you react to the hunger games series. your commentary is very intelligent and analytical, and that series would reward that impulse in spades if you gave it a shot.

These few episodes feel like the story's almost "on hold" because right now the show isn't specifically advancing any of our core character's stories as much it's providing more story and context to the world they came from and the people around them; since their focus right now is helping other people improve.

Doing it in a public place is specifically meant to exert social pressure so that the person getting the bad news doesn't "overreact". 🙄

What you were describing with universal income was Communism. Not saying I disagree or anything juat wanted to point it out since people only ever seem to think of a demonised version of it. I concur with the mindset that people wouldn't lose all motivation to do things should universal income come about (nor that people would instantly and undoubtedly all turn into outlaws without morals should we no longer have a government or police force to enforce laws)

So, when you start talking about UBI you've definitely entered that territory for sure. You wouldn't believe (or maybe you would 😂) the amount of people I've heard tell me what they think the 'perfect society' should be, and I've replied 'you just described communism', only for them to immediately clam up and go quiet at the thought of being labelled the blasphemous 'commie' 😂 It's more that I'm aware of the social stigma associated with that term that I'm always going to pick and choose when I say that word or talk about it more generally, because if I don't take the time to eloquate it well or lead up to it to 'prepare the way' people are going to react a certain way when I say it, and regardless of any point I make and how much merit it might have, some will hear a word like communism and their brain will close off in a certain way. It's a little sad, but here we are. I can tell you're aware of that by the way, I'm more just making clear I hear you, you're not wrong, but it's more a purposeful shying from the word due to the demonisation you referenced. To my mind there's got to be a really specific reason, it's got to be really topical (as in, the episode really warrants it), and I'm willing to give a bunch of time to do the work to make my point while bringing up that word to make it worthwhile to really raise it specifically as a topic 😅
