That doesn't guarantee the GPU will like that at all or the CPU will hold up it's end of the bargain.

Two additional pros I feel you missed: 1: The 1.6 Xbox tends to run cooler and has the newest hardware (also no clock cap that explodes) so is arguably superior. 2: The RAM upgrade (regardless of Xbox version) does allow for higher quality videos to be played in XBMC, which can be a decent benefit if you're using your Xbox as a bit of a media machine.
@doitallYT

The clock caps in 1.6 systems are considered "less leaky" when compared to other generations, they still have clock caps and they still can leak. The big problem you run into is 1.0-1.5 systems can run without a clock cap (modded) while 1.6 systems require the cap, so if your cap starts leaking your only option is replacing it with a new one. I just had to go through my units to check / remove caps, two 1.4's and two 1.6's.

This reminds me I really need to get a mod chip for my 1.6 xbox since there's no easy way to just flash the bios on that model and at some point the hard drive is going to die. At least I don't have to worry about a clock capacitor destroying it since it's the only model without one.
@doitallYT
2 жыл бұрын
Just softmod and swap the drive, I have two 1.6 systems that are going strong with new HDD's thanks to the Rocky5 method 👍 you can get a kit on eBay with everything you need (USB flash drive with save exploit, USB to XBOX cable, and a physical copy of an exploit friendly game) for $20-$30, then you use CHIMP with a new drive and your set! A 2tb HDD with a Startek SATA to IDE adapter, plus a new 80pin IDE, is what I would recommend, though you can go cheap if you're in a pinch. 1.6 systems also have clock caps, they're just considered "less leaky" when compared to 1.0-1.5 systems. The problem is, 1.0-1.5's can run without a clock cap (modded), a 1.6 can't. If yours ever stops working, you'll have to swap it with a new cap.

piggyback is the term and I done this many times on old 8bit and 16bits systems. Heck it's also a way to troubleshoot old arcade systems. I did this a few years ago. With the chip select lines I used a older revision motherboard to find where they were located and used a buffer to protect things. I don't have the ROM anymore for it. I only used that xbox for running Linux.

btw just as an added, make sure to trim your wires to be fairly tight. You want signals to travel about as fast as through a trace for memory performance (not as important on some older consoles) but is still a good idea nevertheless.

A big reason many didnt like the v1.6 back in the day was because MS used memory chips of varying quality to keep up with demand or save costs. There are v1.6 xbox with low quality memory might only ran 180MHz instead of the original 200MHz of prior xbox versions. The 1.6 bios tests on boot to see how high the memory can stably run from 200MHz to 180Mhz in steps of 5MHz if i remember correctly. So there could v1.6 xbox's out there with up to 10% lower performance in some games, its crazy to me actually.
@johnsimon8457
8 ай бұрын
oof. You'd have measurably decreased performance in just about every game, but unless you put a 200mhz next to a 180mhz system you wouldn't be able to tell the difference. I guess they're bending the limits of what's considered acceptable to the public.

If you have a means to calibrate your iron, do so first. Find yourself a old scrap PCB and increment from 275°C by 5 or so until you get to a temperature that will reliably allow you to flow the solder joints. The old solder will have enough crust and contaminants to make your iron work. Once satisfied, try something with a big ground plane and try out your boost if you have it. You want to go with your min working temperature so it will give you more time before you burn away your flux, especially if you're new.

I’d imagine that the home theater PC users booting into Linux would get a smoother / more performant experience because the Xbox doesn’t have to swap virtual memory as often

Do those ram chips get hot at all? I’m not certain, but that may be a concern if you’re stacking them

That could be an issue potentially, I would think more so for the bottom ram module.

On the subject of flexing... how many times can we stack? Can we have a 256 megabyte+ xbox? You would definitely get some bragging rights there.

I'm out. (slaps money on table and storms off) I've heard of other applications for the 128MB mod, including patches for existing games that improve their performance, but that is a whole lot of work for extremely limited applications. I don't think I need Bloody Roar Extreme in 720p quite that badly. Prehistoric Man, heh. That's my favorite Titus game.

Dang, I had no idea people were even installing more RAM in retail units.

I don't think anyone with the know how thought this mod was "impossible" just not practical. Short of Microsoft redesigning the silicon there was always a chance to upgrade the RAM it just wouldn't have been pretty or easy. This is far from what I'd call difficult but it's also not nearly as easy as modding any other XBox revision which is why I think regular folk called it "impossible". Really cool someone worked it out finally! I'd like to give it a try but finding legit RAM has gotten harder here a year later.

This mod made me remember the early days of the Xbox 360 RGH Dual NAND mods. Those were the days. Great video as always!

Now that stacking has been discovered, what’s stopping you from installing 256MB in the earlier revisions? You, stack the other revisions? Impractical, yes, but quadrupling the RAM? America, baby.

I basically taught myself watching videos on KZitem and practicing on real hardware. I highly recommend watching some videos from Voultar and eevvlog. Also on Amazon you can buy cheap soldering practice kits to practice you on. Cheers buddy!
