Hey thanks for saying that, it's really tough to keep up motivation but even tougher when you don't know where to start. I hope this resolves that for you.

Hey James. You're 100% right, especially tip #1. I have my guitar by the couch (sofa) and I often find myself just automatically picking it up while I'm watching tv. I just practice my chord shapes and often, without thinking, I'll start stumming. Then the tv goes off and I'm practising without realising.... Good video.

I also will practice in my head, read sheet music and play it in my brain when i cant bring myself to practice. I deal with mental illness that makes practicing when i suck at playing very difficult. Its hard when you feel like you can't succeed because you are learning material for a class that is not the type of music you are passionate about, and therefore you dont practice and then dont improve and its a terrible cycle. I am hitting walls with my progress over and over and every time i tell myself, sucking and getting over it and accepting it is just part of playing music. Thank you for this video, i am going to sit with my guitar now. Also, if you have your acoustic out on a stand, run a humidifier in the room please! The top of my steel string acoustic split because i wasn't humidifying it in a case, and i left it out to practice every day, now i am waiting for it to get fixed and i have to play on my classical which prevents me from playing a lot of the strummy stuff i like to play that brings me joy while i am still learning to read sheet music to play classical 🙃 like i can't play any actual songs classical style, just beginner exercises and it is depressing because want to be able to have something to show for all the years i have worked lol. i think not learning to play songs i love, or playing the music I write, or knowing how to apply the techniques i learn in class to music i WANT to play is a special kind of torture. I know I will be able to eventually but lately i just feel like i am learning how much i don't know about playing guitar and its kind of discouraging. I have played since i was 14 and i am barely learning music theory and i feel like ignorance was definitely bliss lol.

I am 55 and have no friends. Acquaintances I have but none can play a single instrument. I'm learning on my own online but without a real teacher I can't really learn (some are geniuses and self thought I can't without someone showing and leading me). I like to learn songs I like but playing for myself gets boring. So sometimes I don't practice for a week as I don't have motivation. If only I had friends to practice and play with (does such a site exist online for those looking for beginner players?)

I had and have so much desire and love to be good at playing guitar. I naturally and instinctively did exactly what you were recommending without knowing. I never gave up because there was something very magical for me about hitting the strings and feeling the vibration and the frequency of sound from the strings. If you’re interested to know what I mean, just research 528Hz and other healing frequencies. However, the roadblock that held me back and sabotaged my progress every step of the way was the guitar I was recommended to buy at my local guitar shop. At first, I didn’t understand and know enough about guitars to realize the guitar I bought (Yamaha FG830) was “extremely stiff”. The high action would be an understatement! It was so stiff that it would be a very good door stopper than an acoustic guitar! It sounded impressively good when you hit the strings, but that was about it. When I was a bit more experienced after about a year, I immediately felt the difference when I picked up other guitars like Taylor GS Mini or the Taylor American Dream series. I was absolutely blown away how easy and how playable and how much pleasure it was to practice with the GS Mini or the American Dream. In every sense, the American Dream fit me like a glove. I didn’t want to put them down whereas I kept picking up my Yamaha FG830 and didn’t have it in me to practice longer than 2 minutes. And also, it was a big mistake “for me” to get a big size (dreadnought) guitar as a beginner because it had a longer neck and the frets were a bit more spaced out due to the neck size being longer. For a beginner, the finger dexterity, finger coordination and independence, stretching out fingers apart from one another to hold down a string, jumping over a fret or two, holding down chords are already challenging without the extra challenge the longer neck throws your way.

In my opinion #3 is the simplest, best tip anyone struggling should do. Players of all abilities, including myself, waste precious practice time not knowing “what up”, sitting there drifting off, distracted and not accomplishing anything. So plan once a week to sit down, do some research, learn/study different things, and write them down. I believe this will give you and me a better chance when you do sit down with your instrument to have a good practice. I’ve tried this and it seems to help.
