I agree with you on all points. There are some points (maybe sternum strap on a backpack) where I am fine with them. The v-buckle are the best and I like to replace other styles with the v-buckle when I can.

I respectfully disagree with your suggestion about brands not using fidlock. There are plenty of hardware options out there. I think the specific issue you and many others are facing is brands choosing the wrong buckle for their particular use case. The snap or slide is great for something like a sternum strap, where ease of use is important, but security when being handled is less critical. With countless options available, manufacturers need to consider the qualities and functions of a buckle rather than just how it looks, otherwise you can end up with a bag which can unbuckle itself when being moved, or a buckle so inconvenient that you would rather take the bag off over your head.

To be fair, the Fidlock craze also led to designers pretty much „overusing“ them. I mean, what do you need a buckle on the top of a laptop compartment for? They are awesome on a lot of contact points though … if their use is thought through. Helmets, sternum straps and other more specialized use cases (Fidlock makes an awesome bottle holder for bicycles) for example.

I just got an Alpaka sling, and it uses Maglockz instead. Kinda similar to Fidlock, and they use fidlock on other stuff as well. The buckle on the strap is a slider and I would see it being really hard to accidentally undo, although it is easy to undo with one hand if you are trying. I also don't have much issue with having to adjust it on my back in the first place, but when I slide it around to grab something it is very secure and not an issue. But using the buckle does seem to make removing the bag more awkward, rather than easier sometimes. Mostly I just remove it or put in on overhead. But it has come in handy if I am wearing a lot of layers and it the bag is packed out. The buckle can be sometimes easier. Nice to have, but not necessary, kind of thing. Alpaka does also have a Magnetic stabilizer strap that you can order separately that would prevent the bag from moving around while riding.

I whole heartedly agree. The more I use them, the more i dislike them. I will not use them for a strap closure on a sling, for the exact reason you state. As pocket/pouch/compression/ sternum strap….. they always close themselves when you don it want them too. It’s always annoying when you go to toss in your pack, and the next thing you know…. You’re tied in a knot because the sternum strap closed itself. Or you get stuck to a magnetic whiteboard….. I’ll take some nice, working, old reliable clips.

I am glad you brought up this point. As an user experience architect I always pay close attention to my interactions with the products I use and fidlocks to me are fiddly. They don't always work as intended each and every time. Whereas I've never had a problem with Duraflex clasps and the interaction is always consistent. Even with the V buckle on my MW Spar, it takes extra focus to ensure the buckle is latched properly and more times than not I need to watch what I am doing however the Duraflex clasps I can do without looking without fail. It is tried and true.

Ive only ever used the v buckle & never had any issues with it. I would say if anything maybe theives could get in it quickly but from my experience absolutely nobody can figure it out when they try to open my bag 😂. My orbit gear messenger bag has a square magnetic fidlock buckle but only on the stabiliser strap I would argue this is the perfect use as its not super important that it stays closed & its easier to work with. I do however see your point made in this video.

You confirmed my concerns with Fidlock buckles. So for me, I reserve Fidlocks for sternum straps on my EDC backpacks - NBD if I accidentally unbuckle it while wearing right. For motorcycle use, I go with the classic snap buckles only - very secure and you could still technically release it with 1 hand. Great video as always!

For me it's definitely a matter of context and user experience. I love fidlocks and I never had any issue at all with them and I have a lot of bags with magnetic buckles. I understand your user case but I guess to each their own. I always handle my bags very gently and I'm super aware of moving them around my body so for me fidlocks are just great. I know traditional duraflex of WJ buckles feel more secure sometimes and they will cut down the prize compared to fidlocks but I love me a good magnetic buckle.

@@Youknowthebo oh no, I was referring to the actual product name that fidlock gives them. The one that is featured in your video and is a lot easier to detach is called "snap buckle flat", while the product that I am referring to is called "slider 25". It's very interesting to see all of the different versions of these fidlocks that they have. They are surprisingly not even too difficult to find if you want to buy them and upgrade the existing buckles on your bags! With that being said I am not disagreeing with you, I don't think that they are quite the right choice for every use case, especially not ones where accidents are of concern. I finally relented and bought a sling bag with fidlocks but agree 100% that one should not attribute to them the same level of security as traditional closures. For my travels (motorcyclist included) they are not a replacement for other locking mechanisms. In fact, the speed of unlocking is undermined by the worry they will open at the worst possible time.

I agree, Bo. But for a different reason. I'm OCD and I don't like anything closing by itself. It robs me of agency; I must be the one to close/open any buckle. I don't like things closing on me automatically (as in the case of a Fidlock closure on a flap, for example). When did doing/undoing a buckle become such an inconvenience that we need magnets for it? However, don't tell the folks at Carryology that, or you'll upset them. It's a hive mind over there.

Agree with you on the shortcomings. It needs to go back to the drawing table so to design in a safety catch, which could be as simple as the catch tab to turn 90 degrees and fit into a holding slot, as opposed to just hanging free. The way we utilize them is with straps that go under the clothing just below the belt line, to hold flat money bags.

Putting Fidlocks on a helmet has got to be the most irresponsible and unintelligent move on the part of a manufacturer. I'm surprised they're even allowed to sell them. And anyone criticizing a user who rides a motorcycle is missing the point entirely. It's not where you're using it, it's the system itself. Whether I'm riding or just going for a stroll, I shouldn't have issues that are inherent to the design, period. Double D-ring on the motorcycle helmet, side-release buckle on everything else. I'll take that reliability over the novelty factor of a Fidlock. It's such an overrated and overpriced product.
