Sybil’s death contributed more to the whole show than what people realised. I think if she survived, her husband and possible children would of never fitted in, Tom would never have found love again, nor egged on Henry’s courtship of Lady Mary. That’s just my opinion, of course.

@@theoutlook55 Well, according to the Downtown special features DVD, the Sybil actor , Jessica Brown Findlay, only agreed to sign on for three seasons. The Matthew actor, Dan Stevens, was sitting the fence about leaving, until Jessica's departure helped him reach his decision. Both characters were sorely missed, but, "Wow", did Lord Julian Fellowes, and the "Downton" crew keep the excitement, and momentum going throughout the entire series franchise! Excellent show! One of my favorites of all time! Check it Out! Ciao!!!

This scene made me realize how lucky I was to have my daughter in today's modern medicine. I had pre-eclampsia and had to deliver her 2.5 weeks early because of it. She had to spend a couple of weeks in the NICU but she'd now a healthy 16yo. Modern medicine saved us both.

We never Matthew's death nor did we see anyone's initial reaction to it. Mary was just empty by the time they show her. No tears left, just an empty hole. Not to mention see parents lose their child is an incredible pain. Children are supposed bury their parents when the time comes, not the other way around.

Sybil's death was tragic but would've happened regardless of which choose they had made. The doctor even says so later. Matthew's death was humbling. It shows that even when you're the happiest, you can still die at any moment. Life is short, death is certain.

I absolutely love this show and will watch it over and over for the rest of my life but this moment….I don’t think I have ever been so incredibly heartbroken by a fictional death. Whether book, TV show or movie there have been very few (if any) that affected me the way this one did. Sybil and Tom had always been my favorite characters on the show as well as my favorite couple on the show. Her death was just…a literal gut punch. Seeing her family members, her mother, her father, her sisters, Matthew all of them react to her traumatic, horrible death…I can’t imagine having your entire family having to watch you die such a scary, awful death. Tom and Cora made me the saddest out of this scene but everyone from Robert to Matthew to Carson and everyone downstairs made me so sad. I have seen this scene I believe four times now and no matter how many times I’ve seen it I always fall to pieces. I can’t breathe, I’m hysterically crying, hyperventilating, I cry so much and so hard it makes me physically weak and tired…and then I spend the next few days (and to be honest I’ve never really recovered from her death so the past year) being extremely depressed. I usually won’t watch the show for a few days afterwards just because I can’t bear to watch the show without her. It feels like (similar to what Mrs. Hughes says after she dies) a light had gone out of the show. The show never felt the same to me. A part of it was forever missing after Sybil died.

My Mother born in a farm in 1921 shared a grave sight of a baby in church cemetery. Her Brother suffered a heat stroke at 17, she 7. Baby Brother at Barber had tooth 🦷 pulled no anesthetic, bleed a great deal. Her Grandparents, he French, she Indian ran off road. After killed in horse and buggy wreck, 1895, her 5 year old Mom age 5 thrown unharmed stood there till Father’s family fetched. I feel this scene was so critical in depicting how the lives fragile back then and now. Thank all of them for tirelessly trying to get it right for us to have a glimpse back then. “Bless them all in their lives they live. InJesus Name.Amen”

If I were Cora, I don't think I would ever forgive the snobbish doctor , nor the sanctimonious husband. The Crawlyers paid the ultimate price for their classicist bigotry. The worst part is that nowadays we still follow blindly those individuals who have credentials from Ivy League institutions instead of considering personal performance record.
