I'm glad they went with that take. The line "I don't want to go" is in my opinion not him saying it, its him realising it so I like the slight shock as he delivers the line implying hes suddenly realising

100% agree with your thoughts and interpretation! I've just gotten back into the series (9-year-old me is so pleased haha) so I apologize if my knowledge is off, but I think that part of the reason why it is such an impactful last line is because Ten displays, at the very least, some level of disregard for his own safety/implicitly suicidal behavior (like baiting the Daleks about killing him), so juxtaposing his actual death with the realization that no, he really does want to live, makes it hurt all the more.

I find it fascinating to watch actors as they change the tone of their voice, the expression on their faces. It is amazing how they can do that. Somewhere on YT there is a video of a 'Master Class' in acting with Michael Caine. He is demonstrating how to change from sober to drunk. Honest to goodness it is just amazing how he managed it with just his posture and facial expression. You really have to admire the actors.

Agreed. I'm impressed how subtly he manages to escalate the emotion/tone of the scene with each take. It's comparatively easier to go from one extreme to another, or to read the line in a totally different way each time, but I'm amazed at how David Tennant manages to adjust his tone just a tiny bit in order to make the scene feel substantially different.

This is the one departure of the Doctor that no matters how many times I've seen it, I always cry myself a river (HA!) over it every single time I can't help it. Tennant is always the face that comes to my mind every time I think about the Doctor and I know for a fact that he's always and forever going to be my Doctor. And now that he's coming back for the role, I think I'll never be ready to say goodbye to 14th. It will be like saying goodbye to 10th all over again, and probably this time for good ('cause he can't be the Doctor for a third time, can he?). 😢 I only hope that David gets to keep involved in Doctor Who from time to time, even if it's once every 10 years for the specials, or to play another character, I don't care. I need to see him forever in this series, he can't leave for good no matter what.

This is a good example of showcasing one's full work on a project, in that you show the various ideas that were tried and discuss which ones didn't work and why, as well as the one that worked the most, before choosing the one to use in the final product. This is something I learnt in my A-Level Photography coursework and it is good to know the same excersize is done even by those in the TV and Film industries.

I agree, they definitely chose the right take for the final cut. There was grief and sadness there, but it wasn't overpowering. I agree with DT, the fourth take was too much, took things too far and made the Doctor a bit OOC. The first two takes were good, but they didn't quite have the punch needed. The third take, combined with the musical score that was added to the scene? *chef's kiss* Perfect! Makes me break down every time I watch it!

Yeah the final choice is absolutely right, take 4 doesn't sit well with me the instant I saw it. The 10th Doctor's always been the one trying to hold it in, being brave for his companions, comforting them when they're distraught, and to hold on and keep himself going. He's a fighting man, never emotionally overwought, and that's why the last episode seeing his eyes shining with emotion just makes me teary enough already. TBH we fans are usually the ones crying for him. 😂 I like it better that way, makes the recent 3 specials character arc so much more potent.

I actually prefer the first take over the others tbh, and think it would have been best to play the line as emotionless as possible. We know that it’s going to be an emotional scene, we’ve been building to this since “I think your song must end soon,” and End of Time really builds on it. There’s just no way it’s not going to be a heartbreaking scene so, as David said, the Doctor himself being over emotional robs the audience of the opportunity to breakdown themselves. And especially when you consider that the last ten minutes was Ten getting “his reward” by seeing everyone in his era one last time, it creates this feeling of contentment, like he’s realising it’s ok to let go. So when he spends so long trying to accept his regeneration, the brutal contrast with his final words being a plea that he doesn’t want to change, I think it would be best if there was next to no emotion at all. Like he says it almost like a joke, that after all this he still can’t believe that he just wants to stay as he is and it just hits him in that moment how much he doesn’t want to regenerate, which only hits that much harder when he starts to glow. I’d be curious to see how that looks when completely edited with Gold’s S Tier score over it compared to the version we did get.
