You made the point brilliantly, and not even with the highest range/fastest charging car available! But it does show naysayers that you can do it with a relatively mainstream car. They will still bleat on about how expensive EVs are, of course, but they won't even have that argument soon! Good job you two. Your snippets of destination chargers were good. Perhaps you could feature some of them in future tests. It would promote these places and perhaps the extra trade they got would encourage others.

Ideally speaking, a 20- 25 min charge between every 200-250km is ideal for most people. This means most EVs need to have at least 150kw capability and our roadway is dotted with 150kw chargers. Over the 25 min, then the wait is too long.. until 15min, the infrastructure gets expensive to build. I think for most people 150kw is the sweet spot. I just came back from an 1800 km road trip 2 days ago in our ID.4. Using 50kw chargers, we had to wait 50 minutes at times. It worked out for us because we planned around those charging stops by going to lunch or going for a short hike near the small town, but if this was a regular stop, it would be WAY too long.

For the last few years, range anxiety hasn't been something I've been concerned about with EVs for the reasons you've both highlighted in this video. The main problem for me is that EVs are still too expensive for the most part. I wanted to make my new car an EV but it just wasn't financially viable for me and it's the same story I hear from a bunch of people I know. So much so, that I ended up buying another petrol car, but I intend on it being not just my last petrol car, but my last car full stop. Public transport is getting better, albeit slowly, in the UK even National Rail fares are still stupidly high. I'd love to replace my car, eventually, with a nice e-bike and a combination of public transport, especially if I end up living in London

"Bladder range" has always been my argument against the anti-EV ICE drivers' usual rant about "I'm not swapping to an EV unless it can do 600 miles, like my diesel car...!" Just as you found, the bladder always gives way, WAY before the EV range is up, even if you don't follow the 2.2 litres of water-per-day rule. Admittedly, it all depends on the charging infrastructure being on route, available and fast enough - veteran EV owners always have at least 3 charging locations planned for each stop (usually ones just off the main routes, such as the Instavolts at Starbucks / Costa / MacDonalds sites) just in case any are busy / off-line. It shouldn't have to be that way...but, hey, it took about 23 years for the first petrol station to be opened after the first combustion-engined car was revealed, so we're not actually doing that bad...!! 🤣

We've just returned from Switzerland. The car charged when we stopped to eat. In every case, the car was ready before we were. The most revealing was our stop at Thurrock on the way down, we plugged in and went into the services straight to the loo and then to Burger King (living the dream there!). One person in front in the queue and as soon as we had been handed the food we returned to the car. I began with fries (regular size) and before I had even finished the fries, the car was ready to continue. I increased the charge rate to give me time to rush down the burger. Here's the thing, probably over 99% of EV drivers know exactly what ICE vehicles are like but probably over 99% of ICE drivers have no experience of using an EV. On our way down to Switzerland we noticed that we were leap frogging a Belgian registered BMW X3 which was on a similar stop strategy but at different points. We first saw them just outside Calais and it was just before the Swiss border when we last saw them. I'll assume they were a normal family doing normal trip stuff (stops, toilets and food) and it was clear that there was no effective difference between the two modes. There are people it seems who commute from Land's End to John O'Groats daily, both ways, in under 20 hours, non stop and they will probably struggle with an EV until it can do 1000 miles on one charge and still have 50% charge left (although I don't know why that's needed?!) :)

As a non leccy driver... How much did that top up cost?! I saw it said 64p per kWh
@djtaylorutube
Жыл бұрын
Quite easy to work that out, I think it was mentioned that the car had a 54kWh battery so if they went from 10% to 80%, that would be from 5kWh to 43kWh, an energy amount of 38kWh @ 64p so £24.32. Now, before immediately converting that to petrol MPG "empty to full", you have to understand that most EV drivers charge for over 80% of the time at home and on cheap tariffs, meaning that the road trip charge cost is similar to the overpriced motorway fuel pumps (who uses those?!). Electric pricing is also very variable, from public charging which could be free or up to £1 per kWh or anywhere in between. We've just got back from a trip to Switzerland. First of all, according to many, this is impossible as EVs are only possible for going to the local shop. Second, the charging was at the AirBnb for a couple of days before moving on to other hotels and their charging rates. (I did pay the Airbnb owner their domestic rate so that is included). The rest was public charging from 20c per kWh with most at between 30c to 0.5 CHF. I have all the stats from every charge and it looks like this:- The total distance travelled: 1865 miles Electric energy used: 462 kWh Total electric cost: £156 (8p per mile) For comparison, you can do whatever mpg for petrol or diesel to suit and at typical pricing but had we used our diesel car @ 50mpg or our petrol car @ 28 mpg (car ideally needs super unleaded) then:- Diesel potential cost: £237 (12.7p per mile) Petrol potential cost: £448 (24p per mile) It can get quite messy to work out but you can assume that every long trip begins with a cheap overnight charge so the first ~200 to 250 miles are always cheap which immediately dramatically offsets the cost of the return leg of a 500 mile round trip. Hope this helps.

Yeah, but most times, unless it's a forecourt of some sort, you'll actually find a single unit or maybe 2, occupied and a queue. Range is still an issue when companies like Stellantis throw out these tiny batteries with small real world range and pretty expensive prices and clap their hands. My MG4 does 200 miles real world motorway speed and when you're doing day trips, that's about 3 hours, or about 240 at lower speeds so I rarely have to charge in public, at most it'll be one 10-80% charge during a day. Not once have I arrived at a charging station to find it busy and with others waiting, so I always have to either have a backup plan or be prepared to wait more than this so called pee break. It's getting better but let's not fool ourselves, until the infrastructure gets to a proper state, a better range will always trump the need to plan for a charge and Stellantis has very few range beasts in their line-up, and their newer models are a poor attempt as well.

This whole scenario is kind of ludicrous from what I gather out of it. First of all, I wouldn't buy an electric car, even if I could afford it! I would buy a car that has excellent gas mileage, like a Kia Soul, 27 to 30 miles per gallon. Second, comparing how long your car could run without having to re-fuel, to when you have to stop to pee is the stupidist thing I ever heard of! One has nothing to do with the other! What should be important is owning a vehicle that has good gas mileage, which is cost effective! The less you have to gas up, the less money you spend. As for having to make pit stops, try not drinking so much water and other liquids while on the road, and you may also get better mileage without having to stop to find a restroom!

Noah_E, that's really not a very nice thing to say to anyone. The truth of the matter is, if you plan on taking a long road trip, cut down on your liquid intake until you get to your destination. If you are going to guzzle two mugs of coffee, and a bottle or two of water, you are going to have to stop one or two hours later! I've taken a road trip from Upstate NY to Long Island, NY. The drive takes about 3 and 1/2 to 4 hours, depending upon traffic. I was able to do the trip without stopping. (Most of the rest stops along the NY Thruway were closed anyway.) The only water I drank was with my morning medication, and I had no coffee or anything else until I arrived at the hotel in Long Island. It's important to be well hydrated, but cutting down on liquids for a road trip shouldn't do any harm to your body.

What a total load of pish ! How can you possibly compare charging a car for an hour or more, against a 5 minute stop for a wee. It is a ridiculous comparrison. As well as this with a driving partner, which most people have, you can eat, drink and rest, whilst in the passenger seat, if you are in a hurry. We just travelled back from the Highlands of Scotland, we stopped for a total of 10 to 15 minutes in a 360 mile, 7 1/2 hour journey. The range of both my diesel vehicles is 650 miles, so we could have gone another 300 miles, if we had the need to.The advertised range of an EV is markedly less, when travelling at constant dual carriageway or motorway speeds as well. Llewelyn could also have prostate problems as well behind the scenes at his age and maybe would do better with a catheter and a bag.
