Japan might be famous for its bustling megacities like Tokyo, but much of the country is actually covered in mountains. Over the course of 48 hours, we hike the Nakasendo trail, beginning at the picturesque village of Naraijuku, nestled in the remote mountains of central Japan.
The Nakasendo Trail is a historic route in Japan that dates back to the Edo period (1603-1868). It was one of the five main highways connecting Edo (modern-day Tokyo) with Kyoto. The trail stretches approximately 534 kilometers (332 miles) and passes through scenic rural landscapes, forests, and post towns, which were once rest stops for travelers. Today, sections of the Nakasendo Trail have been preserved and are popular for hiking, offering a glimpse into Japan's historical and cultural heritage.
