I would also like to give my input. In Calc 1 (which at this this point in time was last semester for me) I was struggling in the class because I just could not understand it. When exams rolled around, I was scoring with 60's and it got to the point where I was contemplating on whether or not I should drop the class. I decided to keep going and work my ass off for the final third in the semester. When the final exam came, I was one of the few people that actually scored an 'A' (93 to be exact) between all the students taking Calc 1 that semester. In the end, I brought my grade up from a 67 to an 81 so I was definitely pleased. As a current Calc 2 student, I just scored a 98/100 on the integral exam so If any of you are struggling, I hope you read this and gain some inspiration to work hard and finish successful.

We have two PhD's from MIT and Caltech teaching at my University. They all very candidly admitted that they failed classes and retook them but they all say this..."Look at me now. See...failing a class really doesn't dictate your overall success." To put things in a different perspective, think of it like running a business. You lose money in come investments but you gain in others. Those losses won't necessarily dictate your overall wealth; the average does. In other words, don't dwell on losing, focus on final point on your journey.

No one likes to fail. Whether it’s at work, at home, or in another area of your life, failure is painful - and it can also be costly in terms of time, money, or both. But failure is a normal part of life. If you never, ever suffer a failure, then you’re probably not pushing yourself to your full potential. Often, it’s only through failure that we eventually meet with success. Here’s how to pick yourself up after you’ve failed: Limit the Damage Caused Once you realize you’ve failed, you need to take steps to limit the damage caused by that failure. That could mean: You sell off that gym equipment that you’re never going to get round to using You step down from that position that you should never have taken in the first place You apologize to someone who you hurt by saying something thoughtless or unkind Whatever the situation, being proactive is always going to be a better option than sticking your head in the sand and wishing it had never happened. Remember that Other People Fail Too Most people don’t talk openly about their failures. They’ll tell you about that great new contract they signed … not that deal they worked on for months, only to have it slip through their fingers. But failure is normal, and lots of people fail time and time again before meeting with success. Here are a few quotes that might help you to remember that: “Edison failed 10, 000 times before he made the electric light. Do not be discouraged if you fail a few times.” - Napoleon Hill “I’ve missed more than 9000 shots in my career. I’ve lost almost 300 games. 26 times, I’ve been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.” - Michael Jordan “I was set free because my greatest fear had been realized, and I still had a daughter who I adored, and I had an old typewriter and a big idea. And so rock bottom became a solid foundation on which I rebuilt my life.” - J.K. Rowling Remind Yourself of Your Past Successes… Failing doesn’t mean that you’re worthless, or that you’ll never achieve the things you want. Think of all the times in the past when you’ve succeeded. Maybe you got a promotion that you worked for last year, or you had a great GPA in college, or you lost weight, or you learned to play a musical instrument. You might want to write down a list of successes - things that you’ve accomplished over the past few years, whether big or small. If you ever lack confidence, you can go back and read over that list. …And Your Past Failures Your past successes are important … but so are your past failures. You’ve made mistakes before, and you’ve survived them. Perhaps you did badly in an exam, or screwed something up at work, or lost your temper and had to apologize. It’s not fun to think about the times when things went wrong, but by acknowledging your failures, you can remind yourself that today is no different. Just as you recovered in the past, you can recover from your recent failure too. Make a Decision Whatever went wrong, you’re probably facing some sort of decision - even once the initial consequences are over. For instance, perhaps you took out a credit card and ended up in debt. You’re facing two choices: keep using the card, or make it inaccessible in some way. Don’t rush into making hasty decisions - but do look for a forward path. That might require some deep thinking. You can help yourself by: Getting some extra advice and support with a particular area of your life, perhaps from a professional like a doctor, personal trainer, life coach, or counselor. Reading and learning more, if a lack of knowledge led to your failure. Talking through your options with a loved one or close friend, or writing in a journal about the decision(s) that you face. “Doing nothing” is certainly an option … but it’s a decision in itself, and often one that won’t lead to anything positive. Whatever failure you’re struggling with right now, you can learn from it, and move on.

I would debate with myself if I should just walk out of the room or at least try to make something work out. What I decided to do was to stick it out through whole semester and take the F. Then the next semester It was all review and much easier to understand. I learned that failing is a good thing and very humbling. Lets hear more stories of failing and then succeeding.

I am so very glad, that you has shared this personal part of your life with us. I had a water company management position thrown on top of me and I ended up not only chief CEO, but had to study for and take the state certified water operator's license test. There was a small book I studied from. But anyway on the first test, I failed it. I went back and studied all over again and the second time I took the boards, I had to calculate water flow, from what I think was an 18 inch pipe at so many estimated gallons per second. I referred to the math I already had in my head, but visualized the flow rate, plus looking at sections of water in that pipe, as if they were cans of jellied cranberry flowing through the pipe. I kind of timed this and then came up with the right answer. I think that it's good to show fallibility, lets us all know that your'e are in fact human and not a super-clone of some kind. I am on a Korean math teacher's teaching now on the Tube. Lady is really good, fast but very very clear. Luv to you Nancy and yours xo

I failed my accounting 202 exam in college. I thought it was the most frustrating class, the most irritating field and i had no idea why anyone would ever want to be an accountant.. I stuck with it, eventually passed. Since then, I graduated with a degree in accounting, both undergrad and masters. Worked in a CPA firm for a few years, worked as a government accountant, as a college lecturer and now I run my own tax firm. It gets better. Stay disciplined, and most of all, stay consistent.

3:15-3:30 what Nancy said here is the key part of this video. Many instructors do not understand this. Your teacher could know that you can, in fact answer those questions right if you were just doing it as a homework or class work but test could mess people up, certainly does mess with my brain. I’m more focused on answering difficult questions and so I sometimes make careless errors on the simplest questions. TEACHERS HAVE TO LEARN TO GRADE BETTER!

Well, now that I am almost 80, I often reflect back on what were my most challenging courses. Two things come to mind: chemistry and an EE course called electricity & magnetism. Just passed chemistry but really bombed out in e&m .... I recall test scores in the 20s and 30s. I think during the course I had an appendicitis attach and had to withdraw from the class only to retake a year later.

Dear Nancy Ma'am I'mma student of high school, I use to study maths by watching your videos and they are really really helpful for me. I knew nothing in calculas( integration) but my little work and as a teacher your efforts made it possible for me to happen. Now I'm understanding these concepts clearly and a huge thanks to you and your videos. You don't even know me but as a student I must thank you for all your work. And Ma'am it'll be very kind of you if you'll make more videos related to these topics. Thank you ma'am.

One time I had to do that for a chemistry+physics exam, and I bought a new notebook and hand copied every bit of knowledge necessary to solve the exercises in the books (formulas, bits of information, ...). It was a lot of work but I did manage to get at least 75% in the exam, where I usually struggled to snatch 50% in said subject.

Break it up into sections (most textbooks or syllabi do this for you nicely), and just work your way through. Set yourself mini goals e.g. 'by the end of this month I want to have finished, the first 3 sections', etc. Take comprehensive but concise notes, read your textbook, and watch _relevant_ KZitem videos. Edit: Oh, and also past papers

The emotional stages of failing a test is not unlike the 5 stages of grief and loss by Elisabeth Kübler-Ross in her 1969 book On Death and Dying: 1. Denial and isolation; 2. Anger; 3. Bargaining; 4. Depression; 5. Acceptance.

But for now, I should gratitude for myself as I become a human. Not in the maths field, but in the mass media field.

You see I was the opposite in highschool! I had a D average in middle school/highschool, and somehow got a 3.1 as a senior in highschool. Then I failed the ACT test, and did a cognitive test, and it said I had double the abstract thinking of the average, and was above average on math?! I later found out I had ADD, and an anxiety disorder, and couldn't handle the anxiety caused by tests.... Now I have a certificate in web development, and attempting to learn everything I missed mathematics wise in highschool and beyond for some projects I've thought up. Anyhoo thank you for doing these videos! They really do help! I kind of wish you had a KZitem channel at the time I was in highschool because I have never had a more clear understanding of how math works then through your videos!

Testimony of a maths professor from India "In high school I scored very high in History. But very low in Maths. Then at college, I took Maths stream. The very subject I was weak in and after three years, I came out with flying colours" my friends asked in amazement, "You were very weak in maths at high school. How come you wanted to take maths stream?", he replied, "It is why I am weak in this subject that I take maths. So that I become stronger"
