As a 22 year old daughter of an S tier Karen let me just tell you: It ain't pretty. Most of my life was spent giving people apologetic looks and apologizing for my mother, trying to calm her down and compliment her away from the situation while also having the immense emotional pressure of acting perfectly and overly likeable to get people to actually not see me as terrible as my mother. It turned me into a pathological people pleaser and will take years of therapy to fix. I'm really sorry for that kid, I hope he has some other family members and friends to fall back to because I know if it weren't for my dad I wouldn't have made it through all those years living with my mom.

If I may offer some advice, my therapist told me that I should approach the issue with baby steps. Like if someone asks me „do you want to go to this restaurant?“ Say „I actually would prefer this one“, like just small steps to realize the word no isn‘t evil and doesn‘t make people hate you. I have an aunt who is a Karen. It's downright embarrassing and alot of family members dont want to associate with her much anymore. She doesnt just throw Karen fits in public, she does it to all us family members too. Nothing ever makes her happy, she's always right even when its blatantly obvious she's not, and she's the expert in everything even though half her information is totally wrong.

Holy shit dude, I think we have the same aunt! My aunt is the exact same way, demands everything to be her way and has an ego the size of Russia (especially when it comes to her intelligence, or lack thereof) and when you call her out on it she plays the victim and insists she did nothing wrong. I actually had to cut her off because, amongst other things, she pinned some of our family members and us against each other for no other reason than just because she loves drama and wanted her life to feel like something out of a soap opera.

Having a mom who gets angry at the smallest things- the guy saying "your kid is on our side" is literally the worst thing he could've said. They would just say "I'm older, I know better than you".

It can also be more than just degrading because of age (at least, in my experience). Every Karen’s interactions with other people are a power struggle bred from entitlement, and when a Karen doesn’t feel like her children are on her side in that struggle, she takes out her wrath on them for making her look bad. It’s a lot of, “You didn’t defend me? You SIDED with those people? That was disgusting, how dare you?? I’m taking away ____ until you LEARN to RESPECT ME in public” and on, and on, and on. I wouldn’t be surprised if you’ve already experienced this and more before though. I hope you’re okay, by the way 🥺💞

as someone who dealt with this problem a lot (dad's side) it really impacted me mentally to have a parent like that. Whenever I went out in public i would always think of what to say or do if something happened, how to hide my face, how to not be seen as "the karens daughter", it got so exhausting i hated and avoided going in public with him at all, and when i did i got really anxious and now i have lots of social anxiety 😍😍😍 I think, for my dad at least its not about the fact that he wants to start a fight at everything, but rather he rather had an abusive past so he doesnt really see his mistakes. That doesnt make it ok to lash out at a stranger, its just something i probably cant fix by telling him to stop🤷 Anyways, thanks for being understanding !

Hmmm. I am reminded of a murder short story I read. A sixteen-year-old girl gets employment at a large, multi-layer department store. She has a mom who is frankly crazy, certain that anything plastic absorbs oxygen from the air. She only lets her daughter work at that store after assurances that no, mom, I won't be working in the housewares department with all that plastic. The story ends with the mother having a fatal heart attack in the housewares department. Her daughter mixed up the floors, telling mom she'd be on the third floor, not the fourth. The more I see of Karens, the more I wonder if that story was based on either wish fulfillment, or truth!

@@mrcat4508 Not the same at all, but that reminds me of the MULTIPLE 911 operators who have hung up on real calls where people's lives have hung in the balance, just because the caller swore. The 911 operator's job is to get the necessary info (location, situation, etc.) and just send the relevant teams out there. I'm not saying their job is easy because it absolutely is not, but it is not part of their job to discern whether a call is "real" or not- except maybe the odd obvious call where they have drunkenly called 911 instead of Pizza Hut or something. If they were also meant to use their own judgement on whether a call is legitimate or "worthy of their time" (beyond just picking out prank calls), a whole lot of people in need of help would end up getting nothing.

@@yay29823 Ok, when you call 911 because someone is following you with a knife in their hand, the 911 operator will just say "I know you're just lying to frame an innocent black man going about his own day, you racist Karen" and hang up on you. The reason you think "this is a completely different situation" is because you can see the actual situation. The main point made by this comment was that the 911 operator cannot see what is actually happening, so if someone says "I am being threatened", the 911 operator needs to take that at face value and send a squad to check it out.

I once had a funny scenario when I parked in a handicap spot and this Karen told me a shouldn’t (I have muscle death in my left thigh and a heavy limp. It’s not immediately obvious but I use a cane as well) and she started screaming at me, she was short and I’m 6’4 so that was already funny so I started laughing cause it was so funny. She was recording me then said she’d call the police. I told her go on then she calls 999. The police arrive and she shows them the video, they told me she had a good point. Then I pulled out the cane and her face just DRAINED of blood.

I hope that young man knows that he has nothing to be ashamed of and he certainly didn’t make things worse by speaking up. We can’t control who our parents are or how they behave in public. He did his best to neutralize the situation but hoes will be hoes. I have a Karen mom that is also kind of a cult leader. I also have three chronic mental health disorders and have spent half my life suicidal. Since disowning her and moving 1,800 miles away, I found a new mom who physically looks like a Karen but has the purest and kindest heart. At my lowest this lady took me in and supported me through mental health recovery. I’m not currently suicidal today and we recently celebrated my 26th birthday together. It’s worth it to cut your Karen moms off if they seriously start to make you hate your life and wish you weren’t here. Snip snip. The cool thing is that most people will immediately understand and empathize with you. We have all seen a crazy bitch drag an embarrassed kid behind them.
